Hi there, I've just started a project that's analyzing the difference in the gait of someone wearing goggles that simulate different levels of both peripheral and central vision loss as only people with full vision are participating in the experiment (as a control and we don't have a large enough sample of people with either type of vision loss.) In the proposal of this project, I have to state that people with the same level of macular degeneration as the simulation goggles could theoretically have an advantage over the people in the experiment ie. longer time with central vision loss could improve the confidence and affect how confidently they walk and perform tasks. Another advantage that I thought may be possible is the idea that someone with macular degeneration can learn to "ignore" the field of low vision, just like some people can look past and completely forget that their windscreen wipers are on after being on for a long time, or even if their brain overtime is able to "reconstruct" or assume what should be in the area of low vision from remaining vision and other stimuli? I've tried researching both these topics for hours but I just can't figure out how to word what I'm thinking of and can't seem to find anything on the topic at all.

TLDR; Can people with macular degeneration learn to ignore central vision loss? If you have macular degeneration for long enough can your brain start to assume and reconstruct the missing field of vision using other stimuli?

Could anyone point me in the right direction in finding one of the top eye surgeons that specialize in macular degeneration? I'm having trouble finding any doctors with good reviews based on their ability and quality of work. I'm looking for somewhere in Atlanta or the surrounding areas. Thanks

Okay so during the pandemic I decided I needed a change. Wasn’t making enough money at my job and decided to get a job working for a certain blue cable company that everyone loves to complain about.

I did okay, wasn’t the best agent by a long shot but not the worst. Now because of the pandemic I was working from home in the lower part of the Niagara Falls area. (Important).

I get a call and the screen pops as a caller from the downtown area of the falls. I verify her information and she tells me all her services are down. I open the account and see low and behold, outage. (High speed car chase and a car took out the node).

This is our conversation. M: me UL: Unstable Lady

M: Alright ma’am so I do understand your services are currently all out. Looking here I do see that a large piece of our equipment has been damaged and that we do currently have a service interruption in your area. Our technicians are engaged and onsite to repair the issue and we have an estimated time of resolution of about 10:30pm. (It was 8:45pm)

UL: So I don’t have an services until 10:30?! (Cue sobbing) But what am I going to doooooooo??

M: I do apologize for the inconvenience ma’am, we’re doing everyth-

UL: (through sobs) I want a technician at my house RIGHT NOW. I have nothing. I can’t watch tv. I can’t read a book because I have macular degeneration. I just don’t know what to do. You have to send them out. RIGHT. NOW.

M: Ma’am I do apologize but I can’t send them out right now because it is not an issue just with your house. Even if they came out to your house right now, the issue would not be resolved until the node that provides service to the entire area has been repaired. Our current estimate for when that repair will be completed is 10:30pm.

UL: (still hysterically crying) WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?! YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.

M: I’m currently located in the NF region.

UL: (sobbing) THEN COME FIX IT. YOU HAVE TO FIX IT. IT ISN’T FAIR, YOUR STUFF IS STILL WORKING.

M: Ma’am that’s because I’m in a different service area. The area we’re seeing this interruption in is the lower downtown portion of the Falls. Looking here it appears a car struck the node and caused significant damage. We are doing everything we can to restore it and will have everything up hopefully right around 10:30pm.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

TL;DR: 38F with the visual health of a 93yo looking for input.

Born in 1983. Age 2: Diagnosed with high myopia (-19) Age 8: Began wearing soft contacts to avoid bullies. Ages 12-14: Suffered chronic infections generally labeled as conjunctivitis Age 15: Told I could no longer wear soft contacts due to evidence that my eye was not receiving enough oxygen. Switched to gas perms. Somewhere in my teen years, my eyes leveled out to -14.5 OD and -15 OS. Age 21: Among the first in the US to receive Verisyse IOL implants in both eyes and without removing my natural lenses due to my age and the lack of multi-focal lenses. Age 22: PRK to fine tune vision. Left with glasses for astigmatism. Age 25: I sustain an injury to OS which requires a lens realignment surgery. Left with severe astigmatism 4D, I believe.

It is important for me to note that OD rested 1mm too low. At some point, I was also told I have abnormally large pupils. The combination of these two points left me with poor vision due to flairs and glare.

Age 35-37: I gradually begin to become increasingly frustrated with my vision. I saw many skilled optometrists who could not figure out how to help me. 20/40 was the best they could do.

Age 37-present: I ask my optometrist if I could qualify for PRK for my left eye. The astigmatism was bothering me enough that I generally ignored my left eye because it felt useless. She referred me to the top ophthalmologist in our area. He ran all the standard tests and told me he could likely get me down to 1D if it was stable enough for the PRK. He wanted to observe me for 6 months. Three months into this, I really begin to take notice of a floater in my right eye. They check me out and its determined to just be an annoying floater, but there was nothing they could do. So far, my left eye is still looking stable, but he wants to still wait the rest of the time period.

Then, in September of this year, and what is the most annoying doctors visit I’ve ever been to, but also the best thing that could have happened, he tells me I qualify for PRK, BUT he can’t do it for another six months. Are you freakin kidding me? Anyway, he tells me if i want it sooner, he was happy to refer me to his old colleague.

I saw him two weeks later and he ends up being far more thorough and runs tests even I’ve never had done before.

And then he tells me he’s not doing PRK. Why?
