Local Field Potentials Puns

Are there any in vivo studies that have tried to silence local field potentials and assess the resulting effect on neuronal activity? For example, if a gamma band LFP is thought to entrain a neuronal population, filtering the extracellular space from all frequencies gamma and above should destroy the entrainment, and you would expect some behavior related to the entrainment to be compromised. Was wondering if anyone has done something like that, i.e. actively/passively filtering frequencies out of the extracellular volume, if there is some way of doing it at all.

I've done a lot of work with in vivo single cell electrophysiology, but have never utilized the nearby LFP signals. In my previous lab we simultaneously recorded LFPs while doing single cell recordings but never did anything with them.

My general understanding of the situation is that while single cell recordings are recording the electrical changes from an isolated, LFPs is the recording of electrical changes of a population of neurons. It makes sense to me that within an area of cortex all neurons that are generally similarly tuned will be responding at the same time. For example, when visual stimuli are presented on a screen, visual cortical neurons will respond and you will see an increase in responses in the LFP signal. I'm not sure this is really the whole story there (I'm sure it's not), and what I don't know about it.

Furthermore, in reading papers that are reporting LFP data, I don't know how to parse the information they're presenting. Currently, I'm reading a hippocampal paper that recorded LFPs, and they're talking about fluctuations in different bands of oscillations. This is where LFPs seem to really diverge from my understanding of single cell recordings.

Can anyone either give me a brief overview of LFP, and/or recommend a good paper that I can learn this from?
