I basically have 4 weeks to teach myself chemistry I, my professor is no help and acts like you're dumber than a rock if you dont understand something.
The question is:
Name one cation and one anion isoelectronic with ION of element Z = 38
I get that Sr+2 is Rb. But how do I get to the other? I'm completely lost on this. Thank you

Three crystalline complexes comprising a linear [UN2] moiety that is isoelectronic to the ubiquitous uranyl cation [UO2]2+ have been prepared by reaction of UCl5 or UBr5 with liquid ammonia. Quantum chemical calculations showed that the bonding in the [UN2] moieties is best described with two Uβ‘N triple bonds.

An eightβvertex Zintl anion with an arachnoβtype structure obtained from solution, (Sn5Sb3)3β (1 ), was synthesized as its [ n Bu4P]+ salt. Calculations on the isoelectronic series (Sn x Sb8βx )2βx (x =0β8) were performed to investigate possible alternative structures of 1 , which revealed that the preferred structures of the isomers vary significantly with composition, independent of electron count.
The pseudoβelement concept, in its most general formulation, states that isoelectronic atoms form equal numbers of bonds. Hence, clusters such as Zintl ions usually retain their structure upon isoelectronic replacement of some or all atoms. Here, a deviation from this common observation is presented, namely the formation of (Sn5Sb3)3β (1 ), a rare example of an eightβvertex Zintl ion, and an unprecedented example of a Zintl ion synthesized by solution means that has an arachnoβtype structure according to the WadeβMingos rules. Three structureβtypes of interest for (Sn5Sb3)3β were identified by DFT calculations: one that matched the Xβray diffraction data, and two that that were reminiscent of fragments of known clusters. A study on the isoelectronic series of clusters, (SnxSb8βx)2βx (x=0β8), showed that the relative energies of these three isomers vary significantly with composition (independent of electron count) and that each is the global minimum at least once within the series.

Sorry if the question isn't phrased properly... I'm just wondering why two different elements with identical electron configurations still have unique emission spectra. Is it because of the difference in atomic radii, creating different energies for the electrons to jump to different orbitals?
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond!
Hi guys! So isoelectronic ions/atoms are those which have the same electron configuration, right? What if you have an electron configuration such as copper ([Au]4s1 3d10)- an exception to the electron configuration rules as it is more stable with a full d subshell and an unpaired s subshell- and a Zinc cation - Zn+ ([Au]4s2 3d9). Even though Cu and Zn+ have the same number of electrons, they don't have the same configuration. My guess is that they are not isoelectronic, but can anyone verify? Seems like one of those tricky questions the MCAT loves to ask. Thanks and happy studying :)
*Edit: Zn+ electron configuration is [Au] 4s1 3d10 because the 4s subshell loses electrons before the inner 3d subshell loses electrons. I guess I answered my own question, since this means the Zn+ electron configuration is actually the same as the Cu electron configuration. In other words, they are isoelectronic.
Isoelectronic means that they have the same number of electrons. Boron nitride (BN) is isoelectronic with with carbon, but I can't envision it. I've tried funding a dot and cross diagram to show the electrons, but the closest I've found is a boron triple bonded to the nitrogen. That would mean nitrogen would have a lone pair. How would it form the same structure as graphite then?
Another example that Google have me was carbon monoxide being isoelectronic with nitrogen. I don't understand how they are either.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

Zintl anions are excellent examples of the application of isoelectronic considerations, also referred to as the pseudo βelement concept. In its most general formulation, this concept states that isoelectronic atoms tend to form equal numbers of bonds. Hence, clusters such as Zintl ions usually retain their structure upon isoelectronic replacement of some or all atoms. Herein, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study on a deviation from this common observation. We report the formation of (Sn 5 Sb 3 ) 3β ( 1 ), which is a rare example of an eightβvertex Zintl ion. Furthermore, it is an unprecedented example of a Zintl ion synthesized by solution means that has an arachno βtype structure according to the WadeβMingos rules, and thus fills a gap in the series of known compounds. Three structureβtypes of interest for (Sn 5 Sb 3 ) 3β were identified by means of quantum chemical calculations, one that matched the Xβray diffraction data, and two that that were reminiscent of fragments of known clusters. A comprehensive study on the isoelectronic series of clusters, (Sn x Sb 8βx ) 2βx (x = 0 β 8), showed that the relative energies of these three isomers vary significantly with composition β independent of electron count β and that each is the global minimum at least once within the series. These results alter our understanding of the factors that determine the structures of multiβelement clusters.
