Career after industrial automation?

Hi everyone,

maybe this is not the right place to ask this question but lets see :)

I've been in industrial automation for 8 years now straight out of uni. Various PCS systems, mostly Siemens PLCs (300, 400, 1500), a lot of electrical troubleshooting, a lot of commissionings, plannings etc. It is an interesting, challenging, rewarding (money wise) job where you need to balance your personal life and work life. Out of 8 years of my work career I've probably spent 3.5 years at commissionigs all over the world. This is the main reason I want to give it up.

There are probably a lot of people like me, so what do you think is the best cereer option after industrial automation? I've been thinking about swithing to "normal" software engineering. I always liked cpp, c, python but I'm nowhere near senior level.

Thanks for your replies. Cheers :)

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the responses. As someone mentioned, I could go to project management, there is a possibility in the current company but I don't like that type of work.

Being an automation engineer in a single plant is an option too, but the people I know that do that are not so satisfied with the pay.

Only option that would satisfy me would probably be joining an machine OEM as an engineer. Or going for software development as mentioned above.

Cheers :)

Design engineer looking for projects that can help me transition into a automation engineering role. Integration, robotics, industrial automation, etc.

Hi, Iā€™m working as a manufacturing engineer. Role consists largely of design but starting to force the company to bring some automation in and realizing I love it. Curious what sort of projects you would recommend for learning PLC programming/any other skills necessary to become a controls or automation engineer.

Assume I have 0 experience practically other than reading and watching some resources on automation. Trying to figure out what things I need to purchase! Thank you all very much

HVAC/MEP vs Industrial Automation? Goal is to work on projects related to indoor farming.

Hello fellow engineers, i am a mechanical engineer with a few years of experience in HVAC. I want to build skills that would prepare me to my future goal - to work on large scale indoor farming (hog, poultry, fish, veggies etc.) and farming in general. I think MEP would give me the systems thinking, however, i think automation is the key(?) to make this kind of project efficient. Could you please help me decide? Any inputs are welcome. Thanks!

I'm thinking about doing industrial automation course. But after industry 4.0 or industrial digitalization, what will be its scope?

Can somebody give some tips or guide me about its scope in the future?

how will automation(4th industrial revolution) affect our future?

how will automation affect the economy (will unemployment decrease or increase) , society (will people be freer than now freer as in have more time for themselves eg less working hours) and living conditions.

will it create new jobs? How will the people unemployed because of this revolution be compensated(find a new job).

are there any similarities between the 1st and the 4th industrial revolution?

Lead engineer- industrial automation

Hi, I just have been promoted as a team leader. Unofficially, i had filled role for a year now. Just looking for some general advices. Beside this I would like to ask you: What is keeping you motivated, how you deal with other colleagues which has a lower interest in the job;
How do you handle the stress, "impossible" customer requirement specification and so on. (I ussualy come up with two working approaches and let the customer choose by himself). In general, after you taught/help/support someone with a lot of stuffs, how do you deal with his lack of appreciation?
