Principles of Management Essay on Henry R. Luce (Founder of TIME Magazine)

Hi /r/Essays,

I return this Friday to share another essay! This time I will be sharing an essay I did for my Principles of Management Class during Fall 2019.

In the essay I had to analyze the management style of Henry R. Luce (Founder of TIME Magazine) and then evaluate how effective that management style was for the company's success. I think I did a pretty good job and it was quite fun researching and learning about this CEO.

I hope you enjoy and let me know your thoughts! :D

The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 8: The Probe's Message

"We're detecting highly increased levels of neutrino readings," a woman said.

"What's that, Kate?" a man asked.

"Did you check the instruments?" his colleague added. "Maybe the atmosphere's messing with the equipment. When's the last time it was cleaned?" Vutra, another scientist, added.

"Yesterday. I reset all the instruments and checked the data again. At 24:10, there was an unexplained burst of neutrinos from the Asteroid Belt."

"Near midnight, then. Sure it's not an FTL drive of some kind then?"

"Those make photon and graviton waves, not neutrinos. This was something else. Do I have permission to contact the other stations to see if they got the same readings?"

The scientist's tablet pinged with a new message. "Open it," Vutra said.

She obliged. An audio file played out. "We're getting strange neutrino readings from the Asteroid Belt, have you guys also experienced this? If so, call me back as soon as possible so we can get other labs on board, triangulate these things, and prepare a report for the MDC science division."

Kate sighed. "Believe me now?"

Harry and Vutra nodded. "Let's see if they're getting this, too."

"We should contact the science division about this immediately," Henry said. "I'll go send the call."

Ynell'ser's mandibles were being brushed by his favorite Rank 2 engineer. The dust of Earth's air seemed to build up over time in the fine hair on them. Nyli'men smiled. "Is everything all right?"

"Yes, I'm just quite stressed. I'm beginning to think that the humans and Gaia weren't completely forward with their motives."

"Completely? Certainly not. Their movies are full of scheming politicians, and surely that idea didn't pop up out of the ground somewhere. But yes, I suspect there is more to them than we think."

A notification popped up and Ynell'ser swiped at it. "Rank 4, we have detected a speeding space beacon exiting the system."

Ynell'ser sat up and quickly brushed the excess dust off of his clothes. He cleaned his eyes and placed his forearms in a presentable position. Nyli'men moved out of the vision of the de

*AGGIORNAMENTO SCIOPERO REDDITIANI*

β€’ il primo punto riguarda l’espulsione dal consiglio dei reddittiani nei confronti dell’ormai venduto Sarddevil. Su quest’ultimo vorremmo informarvi che d’ora in avanti, qualsiasi contenuto egli pubblicherΓ  non verrΓ  riconosciuto dalla nostra comunitΓ  e, anzi, verrΓ  riempito di dislike e bistrattato. Questo accadrΓ  a chiunque deciderΓ  di opporsi allo sciopero;

Buona serata a tutti

Il vostro Fede227

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

[Offer] Story postcards [WW]

I got a pack of beautiful dreamy illustrated postcards, that are super colorful and inspiring. To me, they look like stories that need to be told, and I would like to send out some to the lovely people of RAoC.

I want to tell the story together, though. If you like the idea, please comment with the beginning of a story - in two to three sentences. It doesn't have to be super specific! I put some examples below. I will go through my cards and see if I have one that fits the beginning. If I do, I will continue the story with another two to three sentences, and send it your way.

I will chose a couple of prompts that inspire me and fit the cards. If you are chosen, I will comment and ask for the address. Please respond within 24 hours, otherwise I'll send to someone else.

Examples for story beginnings:

  • Freedom means something different for everyone. For Luce, it means wheels below him and wind in his hair.
  • Henry felt utterly lost. Some days are just like that. What matters is that no one has to be alone.
  • Annie's journey led across the beautiful landscape. The perspective on things changes a lot when one can see everything from above.

Hint: The cards all have a person or an animal that can be referred to, and most of them are a little fantastical. I would guess about 85% of them have a positive vibe.

Two Unknown: who were the children killed in an English railway crash in 1928 and never yet identified?

A FATAL COLLISION.

In the hour before sunrise on October 13th 1928, a high speed railway accident occured at the village of Charfield in rural Gloucestershire, England. In conditions of poor visibility, a train driver ran a stop signal and collided with a second train and then, in a knock-on effect, a nearby third.

The noise of the collision brought Charfield's villagers rushing from their homes and beds to find two goods trains and one mail-and-passenger train spliced in an awful knot beneath a road bridge. Some passengers were dead already, but there was time to pull others out of danger.

Men from the village ran back for ladders and climbed onto the wreckage, groping for human forms in the darkness and smoke. A panicking mother broke her little daughter’s leg to free her, and one man – shot clean through the roof of his compartment – was recovered from the road bridge sixteen feet above the track. His rescuers loosened his collar with a penknife and carried him to a local pub, the Railway Tavern, from where he was taken to hospital. Everybody who survived recalled the distressing cries of those unfortunate people still trapped in the trains.

Sadly, two explosions cut the rescue short: gas used to light the compartments of the mail train, and stored in cylinders that had been cracked by the impact, was ignited by fires already burning in the tenders (coal cars). Fire engines were on their way – summoned from the conurbations of Dursley and Bristol and Stroud – but it was a foggy morning and the twisting country lanes to the village weren’t built for speed.

The first professional rescuers didn’t arrive for another half hour and by then it was much too late: the carriages, most of them wooden, had been eaten by flames that would burn up to 30 feet high for 24 hours, melting telegraph wires and road tar and turning the bricks of the bridge to calcine. This was, make no mistake, a long and terrible fire.

IDENTIFYING THE VICTIMS.

As quickly as possible, ambulance men and salvage equipment arrived on the railway from Bristol, the nearest city. And Charfield was invaded – by firemen in brass helmets, doctors and nurses who lived in the area and hurried down to help, policemen, officials of the railway companies – and then by the others who followed them: the hundreds of morbid day-trippers who clogged the village with their cars and sauntered down to watch the extrication work. The injured had been taken to hospital and Sir Seymour Williams, the coro
