In Kurosawa's Rashomon, the wife has pretty typical Heian-era soft eyebrow paint, but the spirit medium has very angular painted eyebrows. Was this an aesthetic choice of Kurosawa's, or did different eyebrows mean different things in the Heian period?

Shutenโs height might be realistic to women from her time period because she lived during the Heian period which was way before Japanese people got taller from eating more meat.

What is the dining setting of nobility during the Heian period?
I've seen blogs discussing the list of the foods. I also read that they used zen tables and each person used have this individual tables.
But how is this placed especially during banquets? If each person had their own table, are they arranged in two parallel lines? Or are the nobles beside each other with spacing?
I'm sorry if my question is confusing...

How was hereditary nobility structured in the Heian period of Japan?
I have been doing some free-reading into the nobility of Ancient Japan, and Iโve been seriously stumped. In my readings I learned about the Ritsuryล system of government that divided the country into neighborhoods, townships, districts, and finally provinces. But it seems like the holder of those titles was just a governor. I know court life in the Heian period was extremely hierarchical, but I canโt seem to find any information on how the nobility had land, or even the titles which could be held. If anyone could help that would be awesome. Cheers.

Questions about the Heian Period.
I know itโs hard to know a lot about a period of time so long ago, but I was wondering if there were any noted terrace farm locations of the time? Additionally if there was any notable women of nobility of the time? And I understand that some places of the time were coming under heavy influence of China (ie Taoism/Daoism), with some of the spiritual changes was a possibility ever noted about potential spiritual โcultsโ?

A Role-Playing Game I got here says that, in the late Heian Period, the japanese noble class became so incompetent that they didn't have the necessary knowledge to issue new currency, and that led to... generally bad times. Is this true?
The full quote goes:
>In the closing years of the Heian period in Japan, the noble class was paying the price for generations of introspection and for their failure to properly attend to administration. For years, they had focused on courtly intrigues and had cultivated pleasures at the expense of their government duties. The ministers of the Imperial Court had become so incompetent that by the year a.d. 1000, they no longer had the knowledge needed to issue new currency. The existing supply of coins gradually shrank, and much of Japan turned to barter economics.
>At the same time, the security and prosperity of the Empire was suffering. Bandits wandered the countryside, making travel between settlements hazardous. Leaving home at night was considered a foolhardy act. Crops failed, or were simply not distributed to the hungry cities. Waves of famine and disease struck the Empire.
The game in question is the tabletop RPG Usagi Yojimbo, from 2006. On a semi-related note, I quite like this game and intend to play it, but if anyone could point me towards a better one for setting, that would be great! I'm not really after anything too indepth, it's more about the general feel and basic setting of the time period than serious studies.
Thanks anyway!

Were would a Heian or Kamakura period Japanese person have gone to do research? Where there libraries? Who had access to them and what were the materials available?
So I was wondering where a Japanese person would have gone in order to do scholarly research. Were women allowed? Were only certain social classes allowed? Where there libraries? Thank you.
