Ed Rosenthal and Dr. Robb here. We wrote a book called the Cannabis Grower's Handbook. We're here to answer your questions about the book, cannabis, or pretty much anything. Ask Us Anything!

My name is Robert "Dr. Robb" Flannery. I have a PhD in plant biology with an emphasis in environmental horticulture and a specific expertise in hydroponic crop optimization for cut-flower production in controlled environment agriculture from UC Davis. I am the former Production Director at SPARC in San Francisco. I love this plant, and I love educating people about it.

Sitting next to me today is the one and only Ed Rosenthal. I don't think that he needs any introduction, but for those who don't know, he is the "Guru of Ganja". Ed has been writing about, growing, and most importantly smoking this plant for the majority of his life. We are excited to answer your questions.

Ask us anything about the Cannabis Grower's Handbook or anything cannabis!!!

Also, Ed wanted to share this propaganda from the Jamaican government.

At the risk of sounding my age, here's the "example of play" from the AD&D 2e Player's Handbook. I think it really shows just how fundamentally different the game felt to play compared to the more mechanics-first mentality that modern players seem to prefer.

An Example of Play

Shortly before this example begins, three player characters fought a skirmish with a wererat (a creature similar to a werewolf but which becomes an enormous rat insntead of a wolf). The wererat was wounded and fled down a tunnel. The characters are in pursuit. The group includes two fighters and a cleric. Fighter 1 is the group’s leader.

  • DM: You’ve been following this tunnel for about 120 yards. The water on the floor is ankle deep and very cold. Now and then you feel something brush against your foot. The smell of decay is getting stronger. The tunnel is gradually filling with a cold mist.
  • Fighter 1: I don’t like this at all. Can we see anything up ahead that looks like a doorway, or a branch in the tunnel?
  • DM: Within the range of your torchlight, the tunnel is more or less straight. You don’t see any branches or doorways.
  • Cleric: The wererat we hit had to come this way. There’s nowhere else to go.
  • Fighter 1: Unless we missed a hidden door along the way. I hate this place; it gives me the creeps.
  • Fighter 2: We have to track down that wererat. I say we keep going.
  • Fighter 1: OK. We keep moving down the tunnel. But keep your eyes open for anything that might be a door.
  • DM: Another 30 or 35 yards down the tunnel, you find a stone block on the floor.
  • Fighter 1: A block? I take a closer look.
  • DM: It’s a cut block, about 12 inches by 16 incheas, and 18 inches or so high. It looks like a different kind of rock than the rest of the tunnel.
  • Fighter 2: Where is it? Is it in the center of the tunnel or off to the side?
  • DM: It’s right up against the side.
  • Fighter 1: Can I move it?
  • DM (checking the character’s Strength score): Yeah, you can push it around without too much trouble.
  • Fighter 1: Hmmm. This is obviously a marker of some sort. I want to check this area for secret doors. Spread out and examine the walls.
  • DM (rolls several dice behind his rule book, where players can’t see the results): Nobody finds anything unusual along the walls.
  • Fighter 1: It has to be here somewhere. What about the ceiling?
  • DM: You can’t reach the ceiling. It’s about a foot beyond your reach.
  • Cleric: Of course! That block isn’t a marker, it’s a step. I climb up on the block and start prodding the ceiling.
  • DM (rolling a few more dice): You poke around for 20 seconds or so, then suddenly part of the runnel roof shifts. You’ve found a panel that lifts away.
  • Fighter 1: Open it very carefully.
  • Cleric

What are some obnoxious 'added to the White Handbook' rules you had to follow on your mission?

In mine, there was a rule against petting any dogs because "you might get rabies". While it might have made sense to tell missionaries not to touch random street dogs, the rule also explicitly applied to people's pets. One time a member's dog had puppies (who were too small to even have teeth) and my companion tattled to the zone leaders about me petting them. I was unrepentant.

I disagree with The Druidry Handbook

I’m currently working through the Druidry Handbook by John Michael Greer and I have an issue with the elements section. I disagree with Gwyar being past and Calas being present on the table on page 62.

It doesn’t make sense at all to me.

Gwyar is water, dynamic, flowing, energetic, GWYNFYDD.

The present is dynamic, flowing, ever changing, energetic, represented by GWYNFYDD

Calas is earth, stone, solid, firm, steady, ABRED

The past is, solid, unchangeable, firm, represented by ABRED.

Why would Gwynfydd represent the present and Abred represent the past on the rings of manifestation but not correlate to the same elements??

Am I missing something or just way off base?

Church Responds to Sam Young's concerns in updated Handbook

Part of what Sam Young was trying to get rid of was a culture where Bishops and other leaders ask really prying personal, and sometimes voyaristic questions to young people including those of the opposite sex. With that in mind, I found the following recent edits to the handbook interesting (section 32.7.11):

>Personal Counseling

>The following guidelines apply when a bishop or stake president is counseling a member to help him or her repent.

>Ask for only enough information to determine (1) the member’s attitude toward the sinful behavior and (2) the nature, frequency, and duration of the behavior. Do not ask for details beyond what is necessary to understand the situation. Do not ask questions that arise from personal curiosity.

What gets me is that they are still asking details. The "nature" could be interpreted in a lot of ways. But after making it clear that you need to get some details they seem to be trying to encourage some restraint when they say to "not ask for details beyond what is necessary". Not sure if they are genuinely trying to be less annoying/sick or if they are trying to protect themselves legally, but in either case, it looks like some potential progress is being made.
