Hello!

I'm looking for a number of things in this bakery: pastries, more pastries, a few other pastries, and hopefully small mini cakes I can get on the spot. ^^^^and ^^^^even ^^^^more ^^^^pastries

I want to go to a local business and spend like an idiot (up to 200), to celebrate surviving one of the hardest periods of my life.

I want a proper London baker's bakery, not a franchise and not part of a chain, I love this city and want to experience something I haven't had the opportunity to experience yet.

I'm open to Multiple stops, and if you have recommendations for specifics inside the shop - do tell!!!

The book says it's set "6 months after the emperor's murder," but still, it struck me how the text seems to be describing a 21st century Earth city like Los Angeles or New York City. (and going to great lengths to obscure this with euphemisms)

"The curfews stalling the traffic outside to a funeral crawl. [...] the murmurous honks from the traffic below...were transformed by the tall buildings into an orchestral echo."

The first scene is a traffic jam in a city of what sounds like skyscrapers.

"the haze of combustion from the vehicles colonized the dying rays of the sun"

Sounds like smog. And apparently the vehicles are using gasoline-powered internal combustion engines.

"laminate takeaway boxes"

Probably a euphemism for chinese takeout boxes.

"...the press of other people, smelling like the day-to-day sweat of working in a sultry office, or the day-to-day sweat of being outside in the heat..."

This is describing a rush-hour commute.

Then the mystery POV girl is taken to what is apparently a gas station!

"She would be taken to the little corner store with it's great barricades of snacks and pills and pamphlets and thin cheap shirts, and sit on the should-be-white chairs and smell the deep fryer going..."

"crispy chunks of potato"

French fries, obviously. The mystery girl even licks her "salty fingers" after she's done with them.

"pan-blasted sweet fruit"

Not sure about this, but my best guess is it's a euphemism for fritters.

"sausage meat in batter"

Corndogs.

This also explains why the let's-call-him-a gas station attendant was surprised that the mystery POV girl didn't burn her lips off. Eating a corndog straight out of the fryer would do that to a normal human!

I'm not sure what to make of all this. The epilogue is supposedly 6 months after the events of the book, but the idea that 10,000 years in the future (in a world with space travel!) people are still using cars with internal combustion engines and eating deep fried crap at gas stations...is totally ridiculous?

I'm almost certain Tamsyn's pulled one over us somehow. Like, maybe there's a loophole in the established facts that somehow allows this epilogue to be 6 months in the future *and* 10,000 years in the past simultaneously.

Dunno how, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
