For those who don’t know, freemium is a form of monetization and distribution where basic services are provided free of charge while additional features, services or virtual goods are only available for those paying a premium. There are 3 kinds of freemium limitations out there:

Functional. A premium unlocks new features. Examples: YouTube Premium (offers ad-free viewing, offline watching, watching videos in the background, etc.), Tinder (the swiping is unlimited, and you also get superlikes, boosts, and other neat things).

Quota limitation. You can use the product for free until you reach a certain quota. Examples: Dropbox (storage space quota), Slack (limited number of integrations, messages).

Support limitation. A rare format for the b2c sector, it's more of an enterprise-level thing, often associated with OSS-projects. The software is distributed for free, the premium gets you extensive support from the team of developers.

I'm looking for more freemium programs that are good enough to use for free. Below are some programs I believe that fit that criteria. I would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

The freemium/MT model fundamentally works by putting barriers in the way of things that players want, and them selling them shortcuts past, through or around those barriers. An easy and very popular way to do this is to use a high amplitude nerf-buff cycle that strongly incentivises customers to pay money for $THING, and then once sales have slowed down, to make $THING unattractive so that everyone now wants $NEWTHING. EVE is especially suited to this because it's so competitive, and because Skill Extractors mean that CCP get paid coming and going - people want to buy Injectors to skill up for $THING, then they buy Extractors when $THING gets nerfed and they respec to $NEWTHING.

EVE is now a freemium game. Every change that the developers make that looks like it is unnecessarily making it more difficult to do what you want to do or get what you want to get should be presumed to be a change that's intended to extract more money, even if not from you directly, from the customer base as a whole, until proven otherwise.

That's not to say that every change that CCP make is intended to squeeze more money out of you, and they will certainly continue to make aesthetic and UI changes and even some ordinary balance changes that aren't driven just by the ratchet towards going full gacha. But that's absolutely and unquestionably where they're going with this, because that's how freemium games work. All of them.

They've turned up the heat a little too fast this time, the flames under the pot became a little too visible what with the oh so convenient Skill Extractor sale, and a lot of the frogs have started croaking. If enough frogs hop out of the pot, they'll reverse this change. But the overall direction will not change.

You guys dismissing this as "miner tears q_q"... you'll be next.

Disclaimer: I have never owned a Rorqual. I made some ISK with VANIS corp rorquals a few years ago, and my capital alt (unsubbed for months now) has good Rorq skills. But I have never multiboxed rorqs and never will.

I was mulling over what freemium ship to go for next, when I realized that there isn't a single T8 Freemium, and I don't think there ever has been. Not for coal, steel, FXP or even RP. T9 has plenty; T7 has lots. But not a single one at T8.

There's been a couple of dockyard ships, sure, but even those require shelling out a modicum of doubloons. Cheap, but not free, and were only available for a limited time.

What do you suppose is the reason for this? Has WG ever said, or even hinted? Or shall we engage in some wild speculation?

I've played this game since it was only available in Australia (boyfriend at the time made an Australian Google Play Account). I've deleted that save on January 1, 2020, because I wanted to start fresh. I then started a second save sometime in March (completely separate) but deleted that too. But now? I deleted everything. I've spent so much money on in game transactions. Easily $500 USD. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's my addictive personality. But it should have never got as bad as it did. My tip for everyone: it's a free game. Don't put money into it if you don't have to.

pretty much every game now is won by one of the "freemium" pay2win lords. really makes me think of quitting.

there was NO reason to make this game freemium - it was TONS of fun as a pure f2p (i was here by first release) and people would gladly have paid (like, ironically, dota, that this is in the arcade of) for QOL upgrades or cosmetics. going freemium was an act of pure greed by the devs, to make non-freemium plebs like me rage spend to get the same benefits (if you are wondering, i came in third.)

even when the freemium lords don't outright win, they can easily get you into top three, even if you suck. makes me so damn frustrated.

This is a subjective feeling but I would be interested to get your perspectives: I feel like 5-6 years ago (when I started building my last company) almost all SaaS products that we used had a free tier. Slack, github, jira, mixpanel and Intercom come to mind for sure but also many smaller products.

Today these big companies all still have a free tier (and some actually got more generous) but for most other tools that I look at these days, especially if they are a bit more focused/niche, they only offer a 7 or 14 day free trial and then are paid: SEMrush, Fathom, productboard, Figma (actually has a free tier but with such strong limitations it is hard to use it even with 2 people who work on a side project), webflow etc.
It also seems almost nobody is offering 30 day free trials anymore, did these just not work?

Did something change in the ecosystem that I missed? Or am I just comparing apples and oranges and happen to come across more niche tools now (of which there might just be more)?

Happy about any data or personal experiences, also which type of "free" (freemium vs. free trial) works best for which kind of product. Thanks!

First of all, sorry for my English, I am not from English countries and I am so angry when typing this.

They are making us pay for the app we've already paid for. Are they even allowed to do that?

I understand that the company needs to earn money to improve the app and stuff and I absolutely support that, I am sure that there will be a lot more new users using the app now that it is free, and they can earn enough money from it.

Now they are just too greedy, the least that they can do is let pre-existing users keep using it for free. The free version of the app took away so many features https://miro.medium.com/max/700/1*2_c_jztTcEHXlb1MJHNigA.png, including iCloud syncing and unlimited editing, and that's just total BS for them to take away these stuff that we've paid for.

I think the developers should make two subscription plan for old and new users. Let pre-existing users keep using these basic features, and you could charge us for stuff like stickers, themes, templets in the annual subscription.

I want to get a UK premium, primarily for use as a captain trainer. I've also got a coal coupon to use in the next few weeks, and likely not quite enough coal for Pommern (which will have to wait a few months).

There's only three real options: DoY (VII BB), Exeter (V CA) and Gallant (VI DD).

I guess I could pay out for Warspite if it's just that good, but I'd prefer to stay free if they're ok.

Any thoughts on which is the best for racking up some fun XP and credits?

I had a free DoY rental and found it pretty "meh", although burninating everything was kind of fun), but the credit earnings weren't bad.

Gallant could be run in ops to farm captain XP but I don't love bringing a DD in ops. It is much cheaper than DoY.

Exeter is the most interesting, and I like cruiser play, but I'm afraid the XP and credit earnings at tier 5 will be too low to efficiently train captains or knock out some credits. The cost is in community tokens which I'm amassing a nice stash of, so would save my coal for a faster Pommern buy.

Strapi is open source and „free“ but for the whole features you have to buy a subscription. Strapi is a company and wants to make money, I get that.

The cms is open source, but still not free software as in free beer. Why should I use it over another open source cms, free as in source and free as in beer?

Does strapi collect user data and is it good enough still with the free tier for small to medium sized projects and client needs?

I've got a question for the crowd here... The Black Friday sale has me really tempted for MA, JB, and AK. That said they are a lot of money. I've got a 15% off doubloons coupon + the BF sales... Also have the 25% off coal coupon. I should have enough coal for a single high tier ship.

What I'm working on: I am currently grinding the American lines (at Colorado, Pensacola, and Mahan -- VI and VII). Also working on IJN DDs. I grabbed Dunkuerque on the BF sale and have really enjoyed her as well.

What I'm looking for: I'd like to get a high tier ship for credit farming, training captains (US), and to start working the Halsey and Yamamato campaigns (require Tier VIII+). I also like the idea of a brawling BB after getting wrekt by some MA secondaries recently. I enjoy heavy cruiser play but not to the exclusion of everything else.

Question #1: Alaska vs. Tulsa/Salem

Alaska looks awesome and its back for a limited time. That said it looks like Tulsa offers many of the same features, also at Tier 9, and is a coal ship rather than dubs. Will Tulsa scratch the same itch for smart cruiser play that Alaska does? Similar question for Salem, although as a Tier X its not as solid as the Tier IX Tulsa for my goals, I think. Salem would let me dabble in some Tier X play now while I grind towards Des Moines but in the long run I'm aiming for DM.

I should be able to train US captains in any of these.

Question #2: Pommern vs. Massachusetts/Jean Bart

Pommern and MA both look like they can fill the brawling role. Pommern may not be as memetastic but its close.

Pommern and JB seem to play differently, but as a Tier IX BB I'd think Pommern could serve the credit farming role pretty well. That said I've really enjoyed Dunkerque so I'm thinking JB may be a nice upgrade to farm at level 9.

What I'm thinking: I'm thinking about using coal now for Tulsa and a few dubs for Massachusetts or maybe JB. Then when the next coal coupons roll around and in a few months once I've got more coal, I can grab Pommern if I want it.

Thoughts? I'd love any inputs from folks that own these ships. Thanks!

I'm fairly new to wordpress and I'm looking for a plugin that lets the user search through my hundreds of blog posts via custom filter options. Example:

Let's say I made a blog post about a single animal each day and over time there are so many posts that no one can find the animal they would like to learn something about. The user should not only be able to search by name, but also by properties of the animal. I would define some properties of all the animals: class (mammal, bird, etc.), number of legs, extinct (yes/no), etc. and the user can user those to filter through my list of animals, e.g. to find all extinct mammals with 4 legs that I have ever made a blog post about. Ideally, the search results would not only be the name of the animal with a link to the blog post, but also a small preview of the article.

I've been looking through some database plugins, but those didn't seem quite fitting. I would be willing to pay for the plugin, but would of course be happy if there was a free one.
