Where does "booi aha" fall in the spectrum of forced labor/slavery? I don't understand. Let me know if this needs to be more than one thread. If you have suggestions for books about Chinese slavery, that would be good. I read about booi aha in a book that compared them to European serfs but the authors don't read Chinese.
Hi, r/legaladvice. I am a free Negro by the name of Ben Ross. I was legally manumitted at the age of 45 by the Thompson family, and I have heard that there are similar provisions in Anthony Thompson's will for my wife and children to be manumitted at the age of 45. Anthony Thompson's wife, Mary Brodess, refused to manumit my wife, Rit Ross, and now that the oldest daughter who is still with us (I lost contact with her older siblings when the Brodess hag sold them to other plantations) has turned 45, Brodess is again refusing to manumit her. I am willing to pay five dollars for an attorney to investigate the legal status of my wife and children and what options, if any, I have for freeing them.
Many years ago I read something about Washington meeting the American leaders of Methodism who pointedly attempted to get him to endorse abolition and clearly Washington was of split mind regarding the institution of slavery. Is there any evidence of this?
Im a big fan of ancient Rome, but one thing I cant grasp is how slaves could purchase their own freedom. I know gladiators could make some money and I guess some slaves could do that too but were they regularly paid for their services? Did not the owner also own all of their possessions including coin? If so, do not the owner get paid by their own money? Were there laws permitting the slaves to get paid?
Bonus question; of a man sold him self into slavery like people did to become gladiators, was this for a limited time? Did they have privileges other slaves did not have or were they treated the same?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
