Metalmark moths have evolved eyespots on their wings as well as jerky, pivoting crawling behavior which biologists believe mimic jumping spiders that generally pray on a variety of moth species. Jumping spiders were shown to be confused by metalmark moths when they assume such defensive postures.

The Cuyaba dwarf frog has two 'false eyes' on its rear. The 4 cm frog lifts its rear end when threatened, startling predators. If a predator does not get fooled by the eyespots, and decides to move closer, the frog can produce an unpleasant secretion that comes from glands located in the eyespots.

Study shows that painting artificial eyespots on the rear-ends of cattle reduces predation by large carnivores. In the future, it is hoped that heavily predated regions in Africa can use this as an effective, low-cost, anti-predation method that saves the lives of both cattle and predators.

This is Catacanthus incarnatus, aka the Man-Faced Stink Bug. Discovered in 1778 by British entomologist. The bizarre face pattern could also function as a defence mechanism, with the pseudo-eyespots drawing attention away from the vulnerable head area. But such a pest...

(Reposting this with only one picture) Can someone tell me what species of ladybug this is? I found it in Indiana and Iβve never seen one before. Everyone says asian lady beetle, but it doesnβt have a white spot on the top like they usually do; it only has the two eyespots on the side.

The sunbittern, native to Central and South America, generally has a subdued brownish coloration while feeding. When alarmed, however, it displays its exceptional chestnut, black, and buff-yellow "eyespots" on the dorsal side of its wings and its exquisite tail, which it uses in defensive displays.

Eyespot mimicry is an eye-like marking. They are found in butterflies, reptiles, cats, birds and fish. I noticed in my tabby cat, above her eyes in the βMβ she has a false set of eyes. Disclaimer: this is not my cat but I used this picture to demonstrate how it appears on their forehead.

Fun Fact: The caterpillar form of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly is considered just as beautiful and interesting as the adult butterfly form. There is a pair of large tan false eyespots with black blotches that serve to ward off birds by mimicking the appearance of a snake's head and body.
