Strabismus is destroying my life and my self esteem

Iโ€™m starting to think this might be why my relationships donโ€™t last. I tell them all the time, before the first date that I have a slight miss alignment, sometimes itโ€™s worse sometimes it not

Well I think this is why they leave me and Iโ€™m just heartbroken, I feel ugly and Iโ€™m tired of this, I want my eye removedโ€ฆ

Just yesterday I was with a friend and one of his friend and I was trying to hide it by positioning myself in order for it not to show and at the end of night the guy said โ€œwhich eye do I have to look at ?โ€ It wasnโ€™t mean but itโ€™s just meant that my shit wasnโ€™t working and everything came at me

Iโ€™m just so fucking depressed and I hate my conditionโ€ฆ

Is strabismus surgery covered by the basic health insurance in the Netherlands?

I will be moving to the Netherlands very soon, but I donโ€™t speak Dutch yet, so I struggle to find any information on my own. I hoped that somebody with personal experience or who can check it online could help me out. I am an adult and it looks that I have divergence excess, if that matters.

Strabismus talk / things Iโ€™ve noticed over the years

I have had univision (no binocular vision, one eye is suppressed and wanders inward, no double vision, and I have had no interventions although just a few weeks ago I started vision therapy) and is pretty noticable, has gotten worse over the past couple years. Since I have discovered this group (which I LOVE, by the way!) I thought it would be fun to just describe some of things I have experienced or noticed with my condition.

Things I have noticed from a lifetime (30 years) of strabismus, an inward turning eye and no binocular vision:

*Wearing sunglasses feels like sweet, anonymous relief. No one can tell I am different.

*I feel like I go out of my way to perhaps be "nicer" to people / a nicer human (maybe more of a YES PERSON) because I am afraid if I am more mean, people will make fun of me (either to my face or behind my back).

*Inward eye --> inward personality. I tend to be more reserved. Funnily enough, the vision therapist I just started seeing says this is pretty typical of people with an inward-turning eye.

*I avoid eye contact like the plague. I am trying to work on this - especially after reading a post of a very wise strabismus-inflicted person here on Reddit. (LOVE this reddit page).

*I feel like after somebody NOTICES my lazy eye, THEY then avoid eye conctact as well! So sometimes when I go ahead and make eye contact, like I know I should, then THEY are the ones NOT looking at me! Frustrating! It's like - oh, someone who's different...look away, quick!

--->Not making eye contact with everyone over the past several years has really impacted me. I do make eye contact when I HAVE to (bosses talking to me, friends, family, job interviews, volunteering, etc) - but random strangers, not really. IE - I'm bad about making eye contact with cashiers at stores for example. This in turn makes me seem shifty (so I will likely forever get carded at liquor stores unless I start changing this), and makes me seem standoffish and gives off bad messages that I don't necessarily wish to send. I'm definitely working on this, as this has made me more socially awkward than I should be at my age. I am also shy, having a history of depression and anxiety with some triggers - all of this is probably inter-related. But, I get by.

*Self-confidence. I can't just turn it on like a switch. I have gotten better over the years, but my strabismus has really caused me to feel....inadequate, abnormal, etc. I am working on self love all the time, but I cannot p

A girl Iโ€™m interested in has strabismus. How should I approach her?

I know I should just treat and talk to her like a normal person, but how can I make her feel comfortable? I donโ€™t want her to feel like she has to hide her eyes.

I noticed that sheโ€™s ALWAYS looking down at her phone and that she doesnโ€™t talk to very many people. I think I know why she does this from scrolling through this sub.

I think the feeling is mutual between us as well. Today she was constantly around me and even made the effort to speak me.

Any advice?

Mild adult strabismus - does it get worse? Questions about surgery

Hi, I am a 26F and I started developing strasbismus on my left eye about two years ago where it slightly drifts upwards. Itโ€™s not really noticeable until I point it out specifically to someone or when I take a photo, but I feel like itโ€™s been getting worse and more noticeable which is affecting my self esteem. I started vision therapy in November last year, and while my therapist is happy with the progress because the base in factor is improving, cosmetic looks-wise it seems unchanged. I wanted to ask the following -

  1. Redditors with mild strabismus as an adult in one eye, did you manage to fix ur eye with only VT and without surgery?

Does it get worse if I donโ€™t do VT?

  1. For redditors who did take the surgery, with the same condition as above (mild strabismus, developed in adult years), do you find your eye staying in position after surgery? Or does it begin to drift back?

  2. What can I expect from surgery if I decide to go forth with it? Is there Anyone from Sydney whoโ€™s done the surgery and can recommend me a good opthal?

I donโ€™t really know much about this condition because the optometrists Iโ€™ve seen donโ€™t seem to care that much about it. Any advice in relation to my earlier questions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I just found out my case of Strabismus is not normal.

I donโ€™t know if anyone has this or has experienced this but basically yesterday I went to a VT place near me where I currently live and the doctor there ran some tests on my eyes. Basically what he told me is that my case of strabismus doesnโ€™t follow the normal rules if that makes sense.

My eye deviation can range from 3-4 (idk what he meant by 3-4) to 25. The further the object the more my eye deviates towards the 25. But usually it lies somewhere between 3-4 if my eye decides to go lazy or wander. The doctor was also a little shook because when he read my papers he thought I was going to be walking in with an eye deviation that was intermittent and go straight to 25. He was amazed I was able to keep eye contact with him and he definitely could not even notice it. I could feel it wander a little bit like between 1-4 but it wasnโ€™t hard to keep both eyes focused. Now like I said when I am looking far away and have to focus then my eye will deviate between the 4-25.

The doctor told me that pretty much nothing can be done to fix my eye. VT, Botox, wonโ€™t help because the eye deviation varies so much at times for me. I mentioned surgery but he thinks that if I undergo surgery that they will probably overcorrect my eye because they will try and fix my eye in accordance to the 25 that was listed on my charts from a previous exam.

He also did tell me that even though thereโ€™s nothing that can be done that I should be happy I donโ€™t have it like some people do. Some people have it a lot worse and you should be thankful itโ€™s not that bad he said to me yesterday. No treatment or VT will help me unless it were to stay constant.

I also have a brain tumor which he thinks is why my eye deviation is behaving weird but he thinks that if the tumor grows then the harder it will to be to keep both eyes fused at times. So knock on wood, hopefully it stops. Even though it isnโ€™t cancerous cancer and brain tumors suck!

Strabismus following two eye surgeries in the Army

Hello,

I am looking for a bit of insight or experience with a situation that has arose following two separate eye surgery procedures that were done at the on post hospital at Fort Riley back in 2017. I am not certain if they are related but I am suspicious that the problem began after the surgeries.

Started having intense headaches/migraines and occasional blurred vision following the procedure but that was considered normal however it has continued on since to the point I no longer drive. 2019 the VA sent me to a private practice due to excessive delays in getting an appointment with an optometrist. During that appointment the doctor mentions one of my eyes is off center and whether or not I knew that. I told him it had never been mentioned prior to that nor was it brought up during the surgeries. Appointments in 2020 were delayed the entire year with the pandemic, then cancelled and was informed I would be called when they went back to scheduling (hint: This didn't). Now I have an appointment this year and I am not sure how to address this problem that only appears to have gotten worse to the point I can now clearly see the divergence in my eyes direction when looking straight ahead at a mirror. I'm not quite yet the wall eyed dude from Mr. Deeds, but enough to know it isn't what it used to be.

I have no service connection currently for any eye related problems but now I am beginning to wonder if the procedures or the anesthetic started this. The closest thing I found when searching were several articles about the increase in strabismus following cataract surgery and a study that stated strabismus is a rare side effect of corneal refractive surgery. Does anyone have experience with this problem or similar experience with eye related health issues?

Strabismus Surgery and Glasses

(English is not my first language, so sorry for any mistake) I'm 17yo, I had cataracts (got surgery at 6), myopia, hipermetropya, amblyopia and had strabismus.

I got surgery on April 26th, my exotropia (45ยฐ) turned inwards and one day after I had the adjustment where I could say, my eyes got aligned.

Thing is, one month before, my doctor told me and my mom that I had to get glasses, they have 7+ dioptrias on left eye and are like 1-2cm thick, doctor said I had to get big and thick glasses so the glass wouldn't come out.

Last week, doing a check up, my doctor told me to change my glasses for others smaller. Why? Because mine are doing a prismatic effect and making a deviation that isn't there. We told her that she wasn't specific, but she said that the optic should know.

The surgery was very expensive and the glasses too (1/6~ of surgery price) and add to that, I'm just very frustrated that I have double vision that no one knows when will be gone because it's because of my brain that has to get used to being able to look the same thing with both eyes.

I'm tired of my stupid brain that can't connect both eyes, my glasses that I have to change again and all the money I made my parents waste.

I'm sorry for this kind of rant.

Strabismus Discovered At 15

So...

I've never needed glasses all my life and I currently have 20/20 vision.

When I was 15 I was sitting at the back of class and was telling my chemistry partner I couldn't see the board (I could). Somehow by pretending I genuinely started to notice a bit of "blurry vision". (Obviously at the time I thought it was blurry but it was just things crossing over). This prompted a trip to the optometrist and they gave me a prism lens.

I asked for contacts but they said prism lenses do not work with contacts. This prompted me to ask more questions and they said I had a very minor turn in my left eye (esotropia). I didn't really think much of it and just didn't wear the glasses when I got them. Upon further inspection of my eyes movement (with a camera) I noticed that when I look far to the left or far to the right I have a bit of nystagmus.

I was supposed to go for a 6 month checkup but I didn't because of COVID and ended up not going until 18 months after the original appointment. Once I was there she did the whole eye exam and found no problems. At the end, however, I then told her I had seen my eyes shake 18 months prior in a recording. She then had another look at my eye movement and agreed with me then referred me to an orthoptist (eye movement specialist). The referral was more of a checkup than anything and it was non-urgent.

Now, I have had health anxiety all my life and this scared the hell out of me. As the referral was non-urgent it took about 2 months for me to be seen. In those 2 months I just festered with my thoughts and I started googling "Nystagmus appearing later in life" and "Strabismus appearing later in life". I ended up diagnosing myself with about 40 different things. In the end I decided to go to an eye hospital to see one of the top consultants in the UK about my eyes.

I went into this appointment and sat down and casually said "I have had nystagmus and strabismus for 19 months." The consultant I saw was shocked and started asking me all these questions like "any trouble swallowing?" and "have you had any brain scans?". I'm not going to lie, this shit me up big time. But after answering all her questions she looked at the movement of my eyes and the way my nystagmus moves up close and said it seems congenital (present at birth). She gave me a referral to an orthoptist and sent me on my way.

1 month later I was at the orthoptist and I shit you not, 5 seconds after sitting down he said "I think you have had this for a long time, h

Can strabismus get treated without surgery?

Last year my sister saw that my right eye moved outwards and I really panicked because I've never had any problems with my vision so I thought she was mistaken. But when I looked at pics of myself I realized my right eye really looks slightly off and it's been like that for years. Iโ€™m 24 and judging from photos I believe it had started around when I was in middle school.

I began to feel really self conscious about it so I went to see an ophthalmologist. I was diagnosed with "concomitant divergent strabismus" but instead of informing me or asking me questions about it he suggested that I'd see this doctor who's experienced in strabismus and I could get a surgery there. But that doctor works at a luxurious hospital so I didn't go since it's not that severe. And I kinda let it go. But lately I've been very obsessed about it and ever since I realized one of my eyes was off I've been having hard time making proper eye contact with people.

Now Iโ€™m thinking of seeing a different doctor to get a treatment. I donโ€™t have double vision issues. I donโ€™t have any problem with my strabismus other than being insecure about how it looks. It becomes very obvious when Iโ€™m looking into the distance. But I donโ€™t wanna get surgery, I donโ€™t think itโ€™s worth it for now. Can misaligned eyes get treated without surgery? Thinking that Iโ€™ve had it for years? Iโ€™ll see a professional but I wonder if anyone has experienced it. And Iโ€™m afraid it might get worse in the future.

Turns out I dont have dry eyes I just have strabismus and I cant believe that after going to so many doctors literally none of them noticed

EDIT: Strabismus is when your eyes dont move in the same dirrection at the same time.

I even had to get a brain mri cuz my symptoms where so unexplainable. But finally I had my follow up appointment today with the doctor that prescribed me restasis and she originally didnt notice either dispite running several tests. I explained to my doctor that basically all my "dry eye" symptoms had disapeared from the restasis (light sensitivity and blurred vision) but the only thing left was that my eyes kept randomly going out of focus.

It took her like 5 times of doing the "finger following test" where she moves it back and forth and Im supposed to follow with only my eyes to realize there was something wrong. After she went back and checked another 3 times. So turns out I just have strabismus which I actually had a child and had corrected. I feel so much better now knowing my symptoms can be explained and that Im not just going blind. I have an appointment next week to see a strabismus specialist to get some special lenses for my glasses that will help me feel normal again. Im so happy.

DAE have strabismus ?

I'm a 37 years old woman in the process of self-diagnosing autism (and slowly finding the courage to come out to relatives). I was also born with a severe esotropic strabismus as well as hypermetropia which necessitated two corrective surgeries when I was a baby and a toddler.

So yesterday I was reading about some genetic conditions and their connexion to other genetic conditions and though of looking up autism and strabismus... and I had my mind blown. There is very few studies but those available found that strabismus incidence within autistic individuals ranged somewhere between 20 an 50%, depending of the studies, and it is more common in autistic girls than boys.

I know what works one way doesn't necessarily work the other way (as in having strabismus doesn't mean I'm autistic), but this incredible discovery might be what finally gives me the motivation to get an official diagnosis and make peace with many, many childhood traumas.

Living with Strabismus as a teen

Hey yโ€™all. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with strabismus (exotropia). It hasnโ€™t significantly worsened, as Iโ€™m still able to control it a bit, but it has worsened. Living with it honestly sucks. My self esteem is declining and I barely hold eye contact with people that are not my immediate family members. Surgery is an option for me, as my ophthalmologist has said patching is not doing much anymore, but Iโ€™m nervous. I made a subreddit for teens such as myself who have this condition (due to not finding many support groups for my age range). Itโ€™s still in the works, as nobody has really joined. My strabismus worsened and I dont have insurance

Hi! Hope everyone is ok. So, I just arrived to the U.S. (Philadelphia) Im 34 y.o. Will leave by the end of December. Eye treatment, surgeries, glasses and all that are cheaper in my country, but can't leave now. I dont have insurance. My strabismus worsened. I was thinking of maybe just get both glasses for normal everyday and contact lenses for special or formal events. And then when Im back to my country Ill get the surgery (I accept advice as to if I should choose surgery, laser, botox or which one do you think its the best option).

Right now I dont know what to do:

Should I buy an eye insurance and then go to an opthalmologist to get those glasses and eye lens?

If so, which insurance? Are they for a short period of time? I dont want to pay years of it.

Or just go to see him without insurance? (I know first appointment will be around $200, plus the tests and the glasses, lens...).

I heard some dental universities like Temple, offers dental care for people with no insurance. Do they do the same with eye care?

How about optometrist, is that a bad idea too?

Thank you for your help!

Anyone here have pain from strabismus?

I developed a wandering left eye around 5 weeks ago from today. It came all of a sudden and only is apparent when I focus with either eye as my right eye will drift up when I focus with my left and my left eye will drift downwards when I focus with my right. I donโ€™t know what the word for what I have is but needless to say I saw a Ophthalmologist last week and pretty much told me that nothing can be done to actually โ€œcureโ€ it.

The thing is Iโ€™m not really worried about how my eye looks to other people. Itโ€™s the pain that is associated with the eye moving in those weird directions that is really debilitating for me. Between now and the time I got strabismus my eyes have hurt so fucking bad!! It is literally hurting right now and it hurts my temples, jaw, and ears. Iโ€™ve tried eye drops and Tylenol but none have done a damn thing for me. The pain is so excruciating I literally want to rip my eye balls out!!! It hurts where my eyes pull so if you can imagine the top of my right eye ball and the bottom corner of my left. I donโ€™t know what to do, I canโ€™t sleep because I wake up in the middle of the night hurting so bad! It wasnโ€™t as apparent in the beginning but now itโ€™s just stupid painful. I literally want to stab my eye balls out no joke because it hurts and throbs that badly.

Has anyone had this pain feeling before and dealt with it? Im literally considering starting marijuana to deal with the pain because it just hurts so bad and everything I have tried has done nothing to relieve the pain ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ฉ.

Can strabismus surgery or prisms fix this mess?

I'm going to see my ophthalmologist tomorrow to determine if surgery or prisms is the way to go.

I have strabismus exotropia in both eyes(i think it is both) and hypertropia in the right eye. I recently ran into something called "Binocular Vision dysfunction" and I noticed that these symptoms are literally what I'm going through. It also seems prisms are the only way you can help with Binocular Vision dysfunction.

I've been told typically ophthalmologist aren't really skilled in prism diagnosing. I hope he is though because if he can't that means I'll have to wait a whole month to see someone who specializes in prism diagnosing.

But back to the title

I just wanted to know what your opinions are on this?

Has anyone ever had symptoms like this? Were you able to fix them with surgery? or do you think prisms might be the way to go?

These are my symptoms:

Head tilting

Eye fatigue when reading

Trouble concentrating

Difficulty with reading comprehension

Skipping lines when reading

Headaches

Blurry vision

Trouble holding eye contact

Poor hand-eye coordination

Poor depth perception

Light sensitivity

Covering or squinting one eye to enhance vision

Trouble sleeping, unless there is complete darkness

Light-headedness or dizziness

Unsteady gait, trouble walking straight

Lack of coordination

Nausea (early in my life)

Hearing problems

Anxiety when driving

Trouble judging when to stop, due to difficulty estimating distance

Generalized anxiety

Panic attacks

Agoraphobia

Feeling anxious or overwhelmed by crowds

Neck, upper back or shoulder pain

I developed strabismus when I was 8, specifically esotropia in my right eye, 15 degrees inward. It occurred during a summer when I started playing with a Nintendo DS console excessively, for more than maybe 10 hours a day; I assume this is what caused it, but Iโ€™m not sure.

At the beginning it caused me double vision and although I had no amblyopia, an ophthalmologist recommended me to cover my left eye for some hours each day (I donโ€™t remember how many hours). He didnโ€™t say anything about glasses, prisms or strabismus surgery back then. After covering my eye for the summer, the inward turn became much more mild (Maybe 5 degrees? Fewer?). I donโ€™t know how it worked. Almost no one could notice the inward turn except for my mother. However, the double vision has never completely left. As long as I wear my glasses or contact lenses for my myopia, it occurs on specific occasions: only when Iโ€™m tired, when I look at bright lights, when I do sudden movements, when I look at a near object and then quickly look at a distant object, when I close one of my eyes and reopen it, when I completely relax my eyes. My right eye moves a bit inward on these occasions, I see double for a second or two and then it goes back to being almost straight and the two images merge. When I donโ€™t wear my glasses or contact lenses, my right eye is far more prone to going inward.

Because the double vision is somewhat controllable and ignorable, I didnโ€™t treat this problem for years, I didnโ€™t think about it for years.

I am now 24 years old. For reasons unrelated to my strabismus, I havenโ€™t got my driverโ€™s license yet. But I want to start driving and I have second thoughts due to my occasional double vision. As I said, it happens under specific circumstances, but Iโ€™m afraid it will become worse or more unpredictable in the future. The slight squint I have still doesnโ€™t bother me aesthetically, though.

A month ago I went to another ophthalmologist, who tested my strabismus and told me I have limited stereopsis; I had never thought about that either. He also told me that at this point, the strabismus can only be treated with surgery.

I would like to know your opinions, guys. I have read several stories online about failed surgeries, relapses and overcorrection. My squint is so mild that I donโ€™t really want to change it, I only want to eliminate my double vision. Do you think I should get prisms instead? Iโ€™m afraid that if I undergo surgery for such a small inward turn, the result in

(Mild?) Strabismus: how do you live with it and did you get surgery? Why/why not?

First Of all I just want to say this subreddit has really made me feel a lot more comfortable with my diagnosis. Thank you all. Second, this is a bit of a long post sorry, so Iโ€™ve put a TLDR below.

So I have had amblyopia since I was around 10 years old (left eye was -3.00 and right eye had 20/20 vision). I was given a glasses prescription which I NEVER wore since I could see perfectly fine with one eye. around high school I started to develop what I later found out was strabismus (itโ€™s possible Iโ€™ve had it my whole life, but I really didnโ€™t notice it until I was around 16). So around 17 years old I got serious about my prescription and wear contacts. I noticed that while the contacts did help me see, I still had a lot of weakness in my left eye and it occasionally drifted inward.

Flash forward to now. I am 23 years old. I just recently went to the optometrist and found out my right eye had needed a serious prescription upgrade that I ignored for a couple years. I went from -4.00L / -1.00R to -4.50L / -2.50R. When I started wearing my new prescription I noticed I was having terrible double vision. I went to ophthalmologist and was told it was inward strabismus in both eyes. He told me in the future I may need surgery. Now, After ~3 months the double vision has died down a lot to the point where I donโ€™t notice it come out unless Iโ€™m tired or stressed (or if I drink alcohol sometimes). I guess I have really good control over it?

I was curious if anyone else here has strabismus that they have very good control over? Is it worth getting the surgery eventually even though my eye turn maybe isnโ€™t as severe as some other people? Are there people who have elected not to get surgery for any reason? Iโ€™ve got terrible depth perception and I feel my eyes get tired very easily (probably from the overcompensating / constant re-focusing), but I guess it is liveable. Just curious about other peopleโ€™s experiences - would love to hear about your journey!

TLDR: I have strabismus but I seem to have very good control over it. Is surgery still worth it? People who have had the surgery before, did it work well for you? Did you end up needing to get it again later in life? People who have elected not to get surgery, what affected your decision?

How far can strabismus impact day-to-day activities?

I was wondering what impact can strabismus have on some of day-to-day activities? I've had this issue since childhood, I was told glasses were supposed to minimize some of negative effects but recently I heard of vision therapy and I decided to give it a go. However, I started to think whether this condition could actually influence some things I do without me knowing? For example, could it simply be that someone doesn't have much talent/qualification for driving and needs more practice, or can strabismus somehow be involved? My lazy eye caused my self-esteem to drop really low, to the point of attending a therapy sessions and I started to think how could this affect the way I view myself. Like, am I really such a clumsy guy or I just couldn't do any better because of my sight.
Did anyone have similar thoughts?

How do you feel about strabismus jokes?

I personally don't !Ike them and I feel that people just dont understand how difficult this condition is. I find that the jokes make me feel even more ostracized and that my opinions aren't being taken seriously.

What is your personal opinion? I'd love to hear other perspectives

Well itโ€™s official, I have Intermittent Strabismus!

In other posts in this subreddit I mentioned that I have a Brain Tumor that is above and wrapped around my Optic Chiasm and as a result has caused me to have vision loss due to the tumor being in the location it is in.

Well the vision loss hasnโ€™t really been a big issue for me and is very manageable. I have 20/20 with both of my eyes open and with each eye for the left and right it is 20/40 and 20/20 respectively.

My strabismus started I would say 2 and a half years ago. I remember sitting in my college class in mid winter looking at the whiteboard when my eyes went out of focus (or at least thatโ€™s what it felt like at the time) and I just blinked a couple of times and it went away. Overtime however this started to get worse and worse till 3 weeks ago I remember waking up and looking outside behind my house and my left eye just went lazy. It felt weird and I immediately knew something was up so I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror and tried to mimic what had happened and low and behold the lazy eye was definitely apparent. I told my mom about it and it slowly started to hurt over the past 3 weeks. I suspect the pain being from the muscles being forced to work harder and against each other to turn my eye but like they are pulling on one another.

Today I went to see a Neuro Ophthalmologist to try and figure if the cause was because of the tumor or something else. After a bunch of tests the doctor told me it wasnโ€™t because of the tumor (thank god) but that it probably had been manifesting over time and that I probably had this defect from a young age but my brain in the beginning learned to compensate for it but had finally lost the ability to keep both eyes on target. She also told me that there are special glasses called prisms and that those could relieve some of the double vision if I was having that and that it could get worse over time. She mentioned that it could become permanent like a constant lazy eye and that if that happens surgery could be an option to help restore binocularity.

The strabismus only happens when I focus so like looking around or doing things doesnโ€™t really make it happen. Reading a book, looking at things in the distance definitely makes my lazy eye more apparent but like the deviation can be little at times or really large depending on how much I focus. The strabismus also automatically happens when I look to the far right or far left or look towards my nose. I hope that it doesnโ€™t get worse but honestly Iโ€™m ju

Will strabismus surgery fix my double vision?

I am not entirely sure what kind of amblyopia I have. I get double vision sometimes and i can blink to make it go away. Most of the time its not an issue. My right eye is lazy and is uncomfortable to look through although my dominant eye has a weaker prescription. I have a squint only when i get the temporary double vision and am focusing on something. Will strabismus surgery fix it? Its an inconvenience to me. Thanks

I gave an impromptu talk about strabismus thanks to your posts here on r/Strabismus

During a weekly meeting of a pitch club I joined recently, I volunteered to give an impromptu pitch. A friend was goading me in private chat to add my name to the list, and then she volunteered first, so I knew I had to pitch, too. I decided to talk about strabismus.

Recently I've replied to some posts here on r/Strabismus and encouraged my fellow strabismamas and strabismen to look other people in the eye. Eye contact hasn't been as much a problem for me as it has for many others, BUT I spent time thinking about this past week. And then this afternoon there was a call for impromptu pitches. So I figured, why not?

When my turn came I stood up, adjusted the camera so that I was in frame, and then started like this:

"Can everyone hear me? Great. Now I want you to look at me." And then I leaned forward, close to the camera, so that my eyes filled the image and my outward-turning right eye couldn't be missed.

From there I talked about strabismus and the social difficulties people with strabismus may have, especially difficulty making eye contact. I then switched things up a bit to say I was really speaking for a larger community of people, some of whom had difficulty making contact. I specifically referred to r/Strabismus.

At the end of my whirlwind one and half minutes, the call to action* to the people on the call was simply to hold eye contact with someone who has strabismus, smile a bit more, and maybe say something nice about their appearance, but most of all to see them, and not to look away.

What I actually said word for word I can't remember because it was an impromptu speech and the words just spilled out. At some point I'll get a recording of the pitch and then figure out what I did right and what I screwed up.

Comments from the other members mentioned my leaning forward as emotionally powerful. Feel free to use this yourself! What they appreciated is that they felt empowered rather than just uncomfortable.

And I suppose that's my main reason for writing this post: if you feel uncomfortable about looking someone in the eye, realizing that making that eye contact is also helping other folks who want to make eye contact with you, and who want to make a connection to you. It takes a little extra work on our parts, but consider also that you're doing so to help other people.

So thanks, folks. I don't know any of your real names, but your posts inspired me to talk about us, and to prompt other folks to think about social enc

i hate my strabismus

hey , i am a 20 years old male and i kinda wanna rant about my condition because it made my confidence go so low these days .

back story : so my left eye is blind since i was a kid , my parents didnt know i was totally blind until they got to another doctors .

so when i was still like 3 or 4 years olds i had pads on my right eyes and i hated it so bad because i couldnt see , and i still hate pads to this day because they disgust me ( not an anxiety more like i cant handle them , seing them , touching them or even the smell , i know it weird .... ) , so anyway being blind on my left eye suck , but i got used to it and i dont mind living with my right eye even tho i feel like i am missing alot of stuff because of it .

but for me the problem is that with time i started to get strabismus exotropia , and the thing is that i cant fix it because i cant see with it , so i had nothing to do other then sit here and live with this thing my whole life , i am not sure about surgery but i dont like the fact that i have to redo it after some years because if i keep redoing it will cause damage to the eye and it will be impossible to do it again .

ranting :

-okay small backstory asides , i just wanna rant that i feel so ugly with it , whenever i take pictures of myself i just cant unotice the weird eye going on weird directions , i just wish i had a normal eye , and have a confidence over myself and not worry where my eye is going .

-i worry that i wont find anyone to love me or being intimate with someone or not even having a relationship because of it , i sometimes daydream about relationships and having parteners and the first thing that come in my mind is the strabism on my left eyes destroying the mood like an needle .

-i wouldnt say i got bullied alot at school for it , but some did notice it .

-i sometimes feel like i wanna jump up the windows because i feel like it so unfair it not like i wanted it , it not something i can change i just have to live with it and the fact that strasbismus get worse with time just make me depressed , because i cant be like others .

-i dont trust people who say they dont notice it , like when i tell people about it they be like i dont see it and all , and lately when i asked my friend about it he told me that it not really obvious , and ofc even my family , but i feel like they are lying because i litteraly see it on pictures and on the mirror ( it kinda dificult tho because the blindness make it hard to se

What is strabismus??

Hi all, from the UK Iโ€™ll try and put a long story short. My daughter as had exotropic drift in her eye since she was 4 months old. (Possibly since birth) now it doesnโ€™t do it all the time. When it happens is when something really up close to her eyes of if she say dreams.

My daughter is now 3 and a half After a lot of fobbing off from GP saying itโ€™s nothing we got her to a ophthalmologist and optometrist Since she was 7 months old. Sheโ€™s had regular appointments of the last few years, and they mentioned a few times about discharging her. Anyways yesterday they finally seen what we see. A drift in her eye.

The optometrist didnโ€™t give us a answer to what it was, she just called it a drift, sheโ€™s made us a appointment to have further eye tests to she if my daughter needs glasses.

She said she got some measurements of her eye. She writes down l10 r20.

The test she had yesterday was looking through prisms and covering one eye at a time looking a smaller and smaller pictures.

Can you tell me whatโ€™s going on?? What is it?

From my own research I believe it could be intermittent exotropia. And it had barely done if at all for for the last 8 months. Until this past week when weโ€™ve noticed a few times.

Thanks for reading

Just had a successful strabismus surgery today!

I had sudden onset strabismus that was pretty bad at the age of 22. It was likely caused by a pair of glasses that caused my brain to decompensate. If anyone has questions Iโ€™m more than happy to answer as I was very nervous before the surgery.

Edit: I was diagnosed specifically with intermittent alternating esotropia.

I had strabismus esotropia during my childhood, used eye patch + glasses for several years and it 'cured' it, 5 years ago my glasses broke and I stopped used glasses completely and nothing has changed, can my strabismus 'come back'?

I added 'cured' between quotes because from what I remember hearing before the only real cure would've been a surgery that I didn't do.

I don't have any signals of strabismus anymore, unless I 'induce' it by putting an object very close to the nose (but I think that happens even with normal people (parallax)?).

The eye that was my weak eye in fact, as far as I can remember, has had better vision than the other (although the other one isn't bad, always when I renew my driver's license my sight is considerably better with the weak one that had strabismus).

My strabismus ruined my whole life i just want to carve out my eye and wear an eye patch for the rest of my life

Strabismus is an underrated extremely terrible condition if not the worst, that can someone have when it comes to self esteem and social development. Because of it I've always been a shy and introvert pushover. Now don't you dare to come with phrases like "just be confident" because its impossible when every time you look at someone in the eye your eye turns inward and makes you look like you are mentally disabled. You might say that it can be treated with surgery Guess what? I have had two surgeries and the wonderful end result is that my eye has an even worse inwards turn than before and my whole conjunctiva is IREVERSIBLY damaged, and now im 10000 times worse off than before my surgeries. Feels great being a 27 year old dammed incel with not a single friend whatsoever, not a single ounce of social interaction with anyone, and with a Frankenstein like eye that makes anyone feel uncomfortable around me. Great just great amazing existence! I won't be around for too long, enough is enough, unfortunately there is no cure for red eyes and no cure for social outcasts that just want to fill their Maslow's pyramid basic desires besides just being alive, and earning their living I asked for too much It was NEVER meant for someone like me I will be much better of I wouldn't have to keep waking up into this nightmare of an existence

General questions about Strabismus Surgery and potential LASIK

Hello World!

I am a candidate for both strabismus surgery and LASIK surgery and I want to understand if there is medically recommended order in which the surgeries should be performed. Some background: I had surgery as a young child to correct both eyes. But now at a much later age in life, my right eye drifts. I do not have binocular vision and I do not see double vision. As such, the strabismus surgery will only be to align my eyes. The LASIK surgery would obviously be for improved eye sight and not have to use glasses/contacts.

In my mind, I would think I would need to get strabismus surgery first then get LASIK. But I've read online and even hear one ophthalmologist say get LASIK first then strabismus surgery. (Full disclosure, my potential ophthalmologist surgeon said it doesn't matter). Please advise and share any supporting evidence. I plan to ask other professionals and get evaluations before making a decision.
