How to expatriate?

Expatriation has been on my mind for a few years, I decided recently that it is definitely something I want to do but I have no idea how expatriation really works or where to go (willing to go just about anywhere)...

One of my main concerns is getting a visa (for those countries that may require it) as I am not a student and don't really have plans to go back to school, nor do I have a degree...

I'm smart, able-bodied, fully vaccinated against Covid-19, willing to learn any language, and very ready to make a life for myself wherever will take me.

So, how do I do it? Is there somewhere where I can find the necessary information for a bunch of countries all in one place, or do I need to look at each country individually?

Do I even have a chance to go somewhere without being a student or having a degree?

How does one prepare for an international move? Does that change if it is inter-continental?

Thanks in advance!

New Expat Research to gather actual expatriate input instead of university student perspectives... can you help?

Hi fellow expats! Most of the academic research done on expats and their thinking styles is actually conducted on university students, which means many of the HR strategies and news articles based on this research might not actually include your perspective. Can you help us close this gap?

Below is the link to an anonymous survey for new research on expatriates and their thinking styles. It should take 15-20 minutes and and you'll solve some word problems and rate your experiences living abroad. We are currently looking for adult expatriates of any nationality, living anywhere in the world, not currently enrolled in university, and who speak English. If this is you, please consider taking the survey, upvoting so others see it, and passing along the link to other expats you know.

Thank you for your help!

Simple expatriateβ€”How do Reserves compare to Simple expenses?

Dear All,

My wife and I are exploring ZetaJointCards now to address the need to move on from Simple.

We heavily used Simple's "Expenses" features to bucket or envelope our money into categories.

In Simple, money would be sent monthly into these Expense categories.

Recurring Bills could be assigned to automatically draw down the Expense category balance.

Individual transactions could also be assigned to a category.

Expense categories could be set up keep any remaining balance in them and either fund during the next funding schedule UP TO the funding goal, or to fund the funding goal ON TOP OF the remaining balance.

(For exampleβ€”my water bill averages $150 a month over a year, but some times it is less than $150 and sometimes more than $150. But by funding $150 each month into the Expense Category for my water bill, the months when I don't spend the full $150 means I have additional money in the category for the months I spend more than $150.)

Also, Simple would let a transaction go through whether or not it was over the Safe To Spend amount. I am not sure how it reduced the Expense categoriesβ€”what kind of draw down it didβ€”but it would, and I would have to fix my budget as I could.

I am trying to understand how Zeta's Reserves work in this context.

Using the water bill example above, if my water bill does not go over $150 (let's say it was $120 this month), then will the $30 still be in the reserve or will it be released to a safe-to-spend category? IF it remains in the reserve, will the next funding be only $120 or will it be $150, leaving $180 in the reserve?

Also, how does spending affect reserves generally?

Many other Neobanks appear to use more of a strict "envelope" system than Simple did. For example, One Finance takes this to an extreme and requires you to choose the "pocket" (or whatever they call it) you want money for a transaction to draw from prior to the transaction itself. Simple did not do this.

What does Zeta do? Do I need to select a reserve to have money spent from it? What if I go OVER my safe-to-spend amountβ€”will the Reserves automatically adjust to reflect the safe-to-spend overage? (And, if so, how does this adjustment happen? Same percentage across reserves? Same dollar amount? Something else?)

I ask this because I am spending this Easter Weekend trying to sort this out. I'd like to get a sense of how this works, but there seems to be a paucity of images or videos on the actual use of the UI.

I figured some

Looking for Expatriates to interview for my masters program

Hello! I’m in my last quarter of my graduate program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. I’m taking an international business class and due to the Covid restrictions we aren’t able to go abroad this year. However, we still have to research and present over cross culture experiences. Part of my project is to interview 2-3 expatriates about their experiences working abroad! I’m wondering if anyone here would be willing to spend 30 minutes or so answering some questions.

Some of the topics are Transnational technology transfers and cultural issues, remote global team management, strategies for leveraging best communication practices across cultures, and intercultural negotiations.

Sorry if this post isn’t allowed. I don’t know any expats and was thinking I could go to this sub for help!

Please let me know if you’d be willing to help me out. I will of course keep all your personal information confidential if you want!

Things to do before getting ready to expatriate?

Hi there, I am planning to GTFO of the US in 2-3 years. What things should I be doing starting from NOW to get myself ready for my overseas life in either Mexico or China or Turkey?

Things I have already done:

1 Sold my car in Nov 2020 so the only things I have is my belongings in the room I am renting

2 Got myself a mail forwarding address so I can receive mail and mail them to myself once a year

3 Reduce as many connections and expenses with US as I possible can, slimming them down to the 6 core expenses: Rent, Food, Instacart, Health Insurance, Dental Insurance and Mailbox

What else can I do to:

1 further slim down my current belongings? Right now things I still own: clothing, winter clothing, underwear, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, laptops, phones, calculators, gaming desktop, batteries, headphones, pens and pencils, Hatsune Miku Figurine, Documents/Cards/Diplomas. Those are pretty much all I have!

2 Get myself ready for expatriation in 2-3 years?

3 Further cut my reliance on US resources and US services?

4 Make my life more streamlined so I can leave anytime I want?

What online businesses can I do during weekends, targeting expatriates in my developing country?

Hi there,

I live in Bangladesh and I am out of home for work from 8am till 10pm Sun-Thur. I make half the living wage at USD 355 a month.

Apologies for posting again and I know I have posted a similar question before, but I was not clear in that post. This time, I have narrowed down my target audience/customer and business model. I would like to start a side hustle that I can do during the weekends, Friday and Saturday and the business would run on its own the rest of the week. It would be targeted towards expatriates in Bangladesh.

Given the time constraints, I cannot do tours, local export agency, broker/fix local guides and rental companies. But I can start remote/digital nomad/laptop based businesses such as having a directory website or some other informational website for expats. So I am looking for an online business model. But the directory website will take years and huge advertisement expenses (which I don't have) to generate enough crowd and even then the listing fees would not cover it.

I did some Googling, but could not find online business models or ideas targeted towards expatriates in a developing country. I have limited time and capital, so I need a workable idea that would fit my unique situation before I can jump in.

Any suggestions on what sweatystartup like business ideas or business models that I could do targeting expatriates?

Spoke to the IRS. Expatriate hotline with short wait time! Got vague info about "Error Status" delay in refund, related to Recovery Rebate Credit

I live abroad and found out that the IRS has a special hotline for taxpayers abroad. It is not a toll free number which is a bummer, but I grabbed a free month trial on Skype to get around this. The number is 267-941-1000. The menu is easy to navigate and you immediately go into a waiting queue for a real person-- none of that "our office is closed" even though it is business hours, or that "we cannot complete you call" due to high call volume. Awesome! The hold time for my call to a real person was 25 minutes which is pretty good, all things considered. The reps will only help you if you are living abroad, and they will verify that based on the address you've filed on your most recent 1040.

I am a February accepted filer, bars disappeared after 21 days, now WMR showing "still being processed".

The rep informed me that my status is officially in "Error", which means there is something wrong like a missing form, an incorrect data entry on my form, or that the system has flagged my filing for "some other reason". The Rep could not tell me what specifically was wrong with my filing. She did note that the only thing I claimed was Recovery Rebate Credit. She said that she "was noticing a trend with many filers who only filed for RRC" of being put into Error status, and that it may be that many such filings are being flagged for more examination.

She also told me that WMR is working well now, and updating daily, and that when the IRS determines the specific nature of my "Error" it will be updated onto WMR. She also said that in the event the IRS needs to send me mail related to my filing, that would be noted on WMR. Finally, she said I was welcome to call back "now and then" to see if there was any more news, but she told me that WMR is about as fast and accurate as the info any Rep can give me over the phone.

Why is being expatriate so hard/sad?

I was born in Armenia and resided there till I was about 15. I consider myself well-acclimated since most of my adult life has been abroad. I have also spent much of my formative adult years abroad and received higher education there. I still live abroad. My house, life and employment are all exclusively here.

I don’t get nostalgic or homesick often but I care about our nation deeply and browse songs that I absolutely love. This makes me sad/homesick/nostalgic. There is also part of me that feels that no one in my life can relate or understand this part of me.

Does anyone here feel this way?

The Land Transport Authority holds Saudi Arabia responsible for the humanitarian repercussions of the detention of thousands of expatriates at Al-Wadiah land port.

The Land Transport Authority holds Saudi Arabia responsible for the humanitarian repercussions of the detention of thousands of expatriates at the Al-Wadiah land port

The General Authority for Regulating Land Transportation Affairs held the Saudi authorities fully responsible for the humanitarian repercussions resulting from the continued detention of thousands of Yemeni expatriates in the Al-Wadiah port for more than twenty days.

In a statement issued by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the authority indicated the suffering of Yemeni expatriates going to their homeland and visiting their families as a result of the Saudi authorities' prevention, since March 24, 2021, of their entry into Yemeni lands through Al-Wadiah land port, on the pretext that they own four-wheel drive cars.

The statement pointed out that the Yemeni stranded in the port of Al-Wadiah are living in tragic conditions, especially during the month of Ramadan, in light of the indifference of the Saudi authorities, pointing out that among the stranded there are approximately 1500 new expatriates with their families and the detention of nearly two thousand cars in the port of Al-Wadiah for flimsy reasons.

The statement confirmed that the Yemeni expatriates were subjected to abuse and beatings with batons and electricity sticks by the Saudi riot police when a number of expatriates carried out a protest stand on April 5, 2021 to denounce the arbitrary measures.

The General Authority for the Regulation of Land Transport Affairs called on the United Nations, humanitarian and human rights organizations, the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the International Organization for Migration to put pressure on the Saudi authorities to stop the suffering of those stranded in the land port of Al-Wadiah and allow them to return to their homes.
