Excerpt from Ernst Mayr's "What Evolution Is"

"...It has long been appreciated that it is our brain that makes us human. Any other part of our anatomy can be matched or surpassed by a corresponding structure in some other animal. Still, fundamentally, the human brain is very similar to other, far smaller and simpler mammalian brains. The unique character of our brain seems to lie in the existence of many (perhaps as many as forty) different types of neurons, some perhaps specifically human. What is perhaps most astonishing is the fact that the human brain seems not to have changed one single bit since the first appearance of Homo sapiens, some 150,000 years ago. The cultural rise of the human species from primitive hunter-gatherer to agriculture and city civilizations took place without an appreciable increase in brain size. It seems that in an enlarged, more complex society, a bigger brain is no longer rewarded by a reproductive advantage. It certainly shows that there is no teleological trend toward a steady brain increase in the hominid lineage....

...MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT

Our superb brain has enabled us to create one invention after the other by which to become increasingly independent of the environment. No other animal was ever able to exist successfully on all continents and in all climates. No other animal has ever achieved the same relative dominance over nature. But in the last 50 years it has become evident that we are still thoroughly dependent on the natural world and that our efforts at dominating nature carry a high price. Some of these mounting costs include the overexploitation of nonrenewable resources and the continuing destruction of the sources of renewable resources. They consist of air and water pollution, the accelerating destruction of natural environments and of the fruits of evolutionβ€”the diversity of plant and animal lifeβ€”and the development of such appalling social conditions as slums, poverty, and shanty towns (Ehrlich 2000).

THE FUTURE OF MANKIND

Two questions are frequently asked about the future of mankind. The first one is, What is the probability that the human species will break up into several species? The answer is clear: none at all. Humans occupy all the conceivable niches from the Arctic to the tropics that a humanlike animal might occupy. Furthermore, there is no geographic isolation between any of the human populations. Whenever geographically isolated human races developed in the last 100,000 years, they interbred readily with other ra

Debunking another of Paul Nelson's "test" for common descent

Paul Nelson received his philosophy doctorate in the 1990s. Since, he has published his revolutionary "tests" to falsify common descent in the top scientific and philosophy journals.

Just kidding, Paul Nelson is a creationist and his "tests" for common descent are "published" on the apologetics YouTube channel of his fellow creationist, Subboor Ahmad. Subboor let Paul make a four-part series on his channel trying to "test" common descent. I've already debunked parts 1 and 2 here:

Debunking young earth creationist Paul Nelson's attempt to "test" common descent

Debunking Paul Nelson's "test" for common descent, again

I'm now going to debunk part 3.

Testing Universal Common Descent - Part 3

Paul Nelson says you can believe in design or no design, and you can believe that there was or was not a last universal common ancestor (LUCA) of all known life. He claims that No design + LUCA is the standard textbook view. When it comes to the list of people he gives as representatives of this position over time, the list looks a little odd. Nelson lists its supporters as Darwin, Ernst Mayr, Gould, Richard Lewontin, Dawkins, and Jerry Coyne. All these guys are either common targets for creationists or people creationists think have a theory / quote supporting them.

But then Paul gets to the No design / No LUCA box. Paul wants us to think that the rise of genomics is causing an increasing number of naturalist scientists to reject that all known life goes back to a common ancestor. Oh really? All he gives does here is an uncited, dishonest list of scientists allegedly holding this position. One person listed is Carl Woese. But does Woese really reject LUCA? In 1998, he published a paper (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.95.16.9710-a) where he argued that all life does not go back to one discrete individual but instead some specific community of cells evolving as a "biological unit" mediated by high levels of horizontal gene transfer. Woese thinks that this fluid "biological unit" which was rapidly innovating and exchanging genetic information is the last universal common ancestor. It's more of a "communal" common ancestor than a discrete individual. This is no

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
