Out of Long-Covid, and straight into Mono (Epstein-Barr virus). A reminder to take it easy for all of my recovering Covid peeps .

I was very fortunate to start recovering from long-Covid after the vaccine. My lungs didn't hurt as much, I could sleep more, go on some walks, and brain fog was getting better.

I started dating someone new and was staying up way too late for them, pushing myself to exercise, and also attended a yoga class while working full time. I felt okay for maybe a week or two, and then things went down hill again with fatigue. 10 days later I wind up in urgent care because my throat is so swollen that it's starting to block my airway and I came up positive for Mono.

I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else. It's important to set strong boundaries for yourself, wear masks, and take it easy during recovery!! I definitely wish I would have. We have weakened immune systems and are more susceptible to other diseases, and even contracting Covid again.

TLDR: started to recover, pushed myself too hard, contracted Mono

Epstein Barr virus (EVB)

I am 16w 4d and my blood work came back showing I have EVB. Never in my 30 years of life did I know I had this virus. It’s extremely common which makes me feel better but I was worried when my doctor told me I tested positive for the antibodies. Doctor told me not to worry and the only symptom is being extremely tired all the time. It’s most likely showing up in my blood now because I’m pregnant and things are heightened

Anyone else have EVB? I’m a little worried at how it could affect my baby or my pregnancy

Reactivated Epstein Barr virus and fibromyalgia

The Epstein Barr virus is the cause of mono which the majority of us get. We usually get over it with in a couple weeks and that's it. But sometimes the infection can be permanent and resurface from time to time causing symptoms very similar to the fibro flare ups. Both my mom and grandmother have this. Although, my mother has passed away. She lived most of her life in bed with fibromyalgia, car wreck injuries, and an immune disorder. I thought the chronic EBV was from the immune disorder but then my grandmother's condition makes one wonder. Grandma (dad's side) was always healthy. She worked hard, never took meds then last few years she just fell apart. Severe osteoporosis/stenosis and somewhere in all the blood work found out she had chronic and acute mono due to reactivated EBV. And of course the good old fibromyalgia to ice the cake. The bone problems is understandable for age. But the way she feels and has to live is identical to what my mother went through. I found this blog https://www.collaborativemed.com/reactivated-ebv-driving-fatigue-a-look-at-epstein-barr/ What it goes into sounds identical to fibromyalgia. But, fibromyalgia can mimic many other illnesses. I have seen different studies here and there conecting viruses to fibro. Especially with long term covid symptoms. EBV is a type of herpes which all seem to have affinity for nerves. So it's easy to see how that might be a culprit of fibromyalgia. Both my mom and grandmother had/have the persistent EBV and fibromyalgia with health that deteriorated in the same way. I'm going to ask my doctor if she can check for the antibodies and see if I still have EBV. My fatigue has become so extreme these past couple years. Feel like I have a flue that never ends.Clumps of hair fall out randomly from all over my body. Yet no indication of anything when I get tests. Just inflamed nerves. Anyways, figured you all might find this informative.

Ayurveda and Epstein-Barr virus

I'm looking for an ayurvedic treatment in order to get rid of a chronic Epstein-Barr virus that brought so much havoc in the body, including weight loss, skin issues, intermittent fevers, fatigue, etc..

I've found in a Vasant Lad book the following herbal formula as an Epstein-Barr virus treatment:

Shatavari 5 parts
Bala 4 parts
Vidari 3 parts
Kama dudha 1/4 parts

Mixture to be taken 2 or 3 times a day with one teaspoon of shatavari ghee.

What do you think of this formula? Do you have any other suggestions?

Also, in order to balance doshas I thought in taking one teaspoon of Triphala daily with warm water.

Thank you for your help.

Does the Epstein–Barr virus go away or go dormant in adults with treatment? I’m not sure why it’s so difficult to get an answer for this.

I was diagnosed in November of 2020 with a “longstanding” Epstein–Barr virus. I’m on my 4th month of treatment with Valaciclovir (Valtrex). I was told it can take 3-6 months to go away. Also, I know it never “goes away”, but I’m talking about dormancy, meaning I want it to be inactive and stop affecting my health. I don’t feel any better since being on Valaciclovir, but I know the side effects of this medication has made me more sleepy. So, does EBV eventually go dormant or inactive? For some reason I can’t get an answer to this. (Not to be a jerk, but I’d prefer a clear cut answer, not 100 different possibly outcomes. Like “yes it will go away because xyz”or “No it won’t go away because of abc”). Secondly, let’s say that the EBV does go dormant, that the antiviral medication did its job. If that’s the case then why doesn’t ME/CFS go away? Is it because the diagnosis of ME/CFS is due to multiple conditions, not just EBV? I have longstanding EBV, Hashimotos, Histamine intolerance and a weak immune system (so far). But for arguments sake let’s say these four conditions are all I have. If each condition is treated successfully, then why won’t I feel better or recover from ME/CFS, which seems to be the consensus of every one on here? Appreciate your responses. Thanks.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) ameliorates Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 induced chronic inflammation

This is a supplement, but it should be taken with respect, if you have any questions, talk always with your doctor

In addition to this study, there have already been several lines of research that point to NAC (an excellent precursor of the main antioxidant in the body, glutathione) as an agent of interest for the control of autoimmune diseases.

" Chronic inflammation results when the immune system responds to trauma, injury or infection and the response is not resolved. It can lead to tissue damage and dysfunction and in some cases predispose to cancer. Some viruses (including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)) can induce inflammation, which may persist even after the infection has been controlled or cleared. The damage caused by inflammation, can itself act to perpetuate the inflammatory response. "

" Persistent activation of inflammation or a failure to resolve the response, resulting in chronic inflammation, can lead to dysfunction, autoimmune disease and increased cancer risk. "

" Treatment of the mice with N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant which feeds into the body’s natural redox regulatory system through glutathione synthesis, resulted in a significantly reduced leukocyte infiltrate in the inflamed tissue, amelioration of the pathological features and delay in the inflammatory signature measured by in vivo imaging. Reducing the degree of inflammation achieved through NAC treatment, had the knock on effect of reducing leukocyte recruitment to the inflamed site, thereby slowing the progression of the pathology "

" We have characterised the proteome through the progressive pathology , the cellular infiltrate, cytokine and chemokine profiles and here, optimised an in vivo imaging approach. Together, these provide a comprehensive platform to assess treatment options for chronic inflammation, whatever the trigger. "

Any Experts Out There Regarding Chronic Active Epstein Barr Virus (CAEBV)?

I have a long (many years) history of consistently high EBV titers - including the active EBV titer. My high titers have resulted in a diagnosis of CFS. I’ve wondered for a long time, however, do I have CAEBV, or CFS - or both? The few times over all these years when my active titers have decreased, the difference in how I feel is astonishing; e.g., I start to feel almost normal - the crushing fatigue, especially, disappears. I am certainly not new in terms of trying to understand this virus. In addition to being a nurse, I’ve also been a Medical Writer for several years so I am fortunate that I have the ability to research this virus and the diseases it causes. As the years go by and more research comes out about EBV, it confirms my belief that this virus is much more insidious and causes many more diseases than previously thought. However, I am certainly not a virologist and my knowledge only reaches a certain level. I want to know if there are any virologists out there who are studying EBV and the possibility that it causes, or is a major factor, in not only various cancers (as is well-known, of course), but also a variety of autoimmune conditions like Lupus, MS, Hashimoto’s, etc. I know that years ago EBV was ruled out as the cause of CFS, but in my case (and perhaps many others), it certainly IS the cause of my CFS. I have found over the years that MD’s almost always state that almost everyone carries EBV, but it’s not active. In fact, they don’t even bother to test the active titers. The only providers who have gotten in right with me in that they do test the active EBV titer have been outside the mainstream; i.e., Functional Medicine Practitioners, or other practitioners who have an interest in EBV/CFS.

Can Epstein-Barr Virus be Contracted in a Hospital?

My girlfriend [31F] made an off-handed comment about finding out she has Epstein-Barr Virus. She said she got it from a hospital stay. I have no idea how long she's known or why she wouldn't tell me until now.

She didn't want to talk about it and I didn't think much about it until I happened to remember it tonight and looked it up. Now that I know that it's a major cause of Mono, the kissing disease, I'm kind of suspicious of the hospital story. Can it be contracted at a hospital and if so, what are some of examples of how?

If somehow I'm not infected, as I've never had Mono that I know of, how can I protect myself? She did say that when she is sick from something else, that her EBV is contagious. I have latent TB so I'm afraid of getting it.

31F 5' 6" 95 lbs White Epstein-Barr virus Duration unknown Formerly chronically ill for years from unknown causes. Resolved itself eventually. Was on a G/J tube for years. Has had COVID 19 twice. Alcoholic. I do not know her medications but she does take something for anxiety. Used to drink frequently but is now taking a medicine that makes her sick if she drinks. Does not smoke but vapes. Started recently. Occasionally uses marijuana.

Epstein Barr Virus & Chronic Fatigue

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone here can help shed some light on my chronic fatigue.

Here's all my basic info-

Age: 33

Height: 5'.4.5"

Weight: 185

Race: Caucasian

Primary Complaint: Chronic Fatigue, Weight Gain

Current Medications: Lexapro 10mg, Voirelle

Any existing medical conditions: Chronic Fatigue, Bulging Disks in neck which cause tingling and numbness in hands, Depression/OCD/anxiety

I had mono in high school and ever since then, I have been extremely fatigued. There are phases that I go through (in one currently) where I feel practically narcoleptic. The last time I felt like this, I went to a clinic to do whatever Mono saliva test they do, and it came back positive.

I am so tired that it makes me want to cry. I constantly have a sore throat, and my memory is terrible. I gained quite a bit of weight (about 50lbs) in the last year or so and it is not coming off no matter what I do. I have had my blood drawn and full panels of my thyroid done several times and they always come back normal. The last one I did about 2 years ago and it was fine.

I finally decided to do some more research today and I stumbled upon an article that talked about how EBV likes to hide behind your organs so your body doesn't know it's there, which is apparently why all of my thyroid stuff comes back fine even though I'm having thyroid-related symptoms.

Basically, I just want to know how to help myself. I can't live like this anymore, all I want to do is sleep. Being awake is painful. All of the doctors I've seen before have missed this, and I also can't keep wasting my time or money to just end up in the same place. Is there someone special I need to go see? Do I need to ask for specific tests? Do I need to start taking supplements or changing my diet? Please tell me how I can take steps to help myself! I appreciate any and all advice.

Sincerely,

Beyond Frustrated and Fatigued

Mononucleosis/Epstein Barr Virus

I've had mono for 14 months now. My initial symptom was brain fog/disconnected feeling. Back in May I got blood work done to see if the Epstein Barr Virus was still active in my system as well as if there were any vitamin deficiencies that could have been causing my BF and fatigue. Results indicated that EBV was now inactive and my levels otherwise were all good. My energy level has improved over the last 14 months but my BF has persisted. The supplements I take daily are vitamin D3, elderberry (w/ vitamin C + zinc), fish oil, and B-12 every other day.

I was wondering who else has experienced BF/disconnected feeling with mono and what their experience and recovery has looked like.
