A list of puns related to "Electrovoice"
As I didn't find any useful information on alternative shock mounts for the Electrovoice RE- series microphones, I thought I'd leave my learnings here.
I'm a big fan of the RE 320 as a podcast microphone, but it's quite susceptible for contact noises like tapping on the table, and even moving cups. For these mics a shock mount is really useful, specifically if you don't want to use boom-arms. However, I have been troubled by the huge and expensive yoke style shockmount they designed for it. It's just too big for a table-top podcast and looks silly in such a context.
After dabbling with the RΓΈde shock mounts (doesn't fit) and the Heil Microphones shock mount (barely fits still really big). I ended up with the Rycote USM. If you mount the Rycote in the center of gravity of RE320 , it really works! It's not really pretty, but it's compact, durable and works.
Here's a photo of the RE320 in the Rycote shockmount: https://imgur.com/a/sXXz5aB Note how the mounting points of the Rycote are placed in the middle of the body of the RE for extra stability and prevent drooping due to the weight.
Hi. I'd like to upgrade from my old 2012 AT2020 USB microphone into an RE-20. I will be using it for recording podcasts and singing. However I'm not a pro with these kind of stuff but I'd like to be able to utilize my future mic to it's fullest. What other items should I get with an RE-20? Should I get a Cloudlifter CL-1 and a GoXLR? If you have suggestions please feel free to share your insight. Thank you!
Hi,
I know it's not ultimately necessary, but I apologize for being quite small brained in the idea of audio engineering lol
I'm not the most proficient in audio or anything like that (more of a CS major myself). My dad had an EV-RE20 just sitting around in his basement and I decided to pull it out and give it some use after forever.
So, I got a good USB interface and a cloudlifter equivalent, got some XLR cables and the sort. It sounds great! I have it propped on a mic arm with a shock mount. Now here's where the issue comes in:
I move this thing with a little more force than /slight/, and nothing goes through. I have to constantly unplug and replug it in until I hear input from the direct monitoring again. Ngl, it gives me a bit of anxiety thinking this thing could just spontaneously give up and I'd have to replace the mic with something else. Is there something basic I may be missing here? If there's any detail I may be missing, let me know.
I was thinking it could be a weak connection inside the microphone itself and would have to open and give it a cleaning. I'm pretty sure this microphone is at least 20 years old.
Is it practical to use an RE20 Handheld?

Hi,
So my dad had a spare EV RE20 sitting around. In my assembly with my mic arm, there seems to be an issue on the microphone stand clip. It's stuck to its prior stand like this. Is there any possible way to separate the two?
For the record, I've put an ungodly amount of effort into just unscrewing the two.
So far I've tried:
- Applying WD40 between the base and plastic.
- Ran it under hot water (obviously dried it before doing anything else)
- Freezer, no luck
EDIT: I got it. for future reference, use pliers on any gripping point you can get toward the head of the mic. Twist the attachment holding the pliers dominantly.
Hi guys, i need help picking a sound system for my home, i like alot of bass and nice sound so im debating on one of the two speakers setup. First is 2 JBL JRX225 Dual 15in Passive Speaker if i power them with Yamaha EMX5 Powered mixer. The speaker is 500/2000w and the mixer powers at 2x 500W [4Ξ©] if they would get the full sound or go with a power amplifier with 2x1000w. Second setup is getting 2 Electrovoice ZLX12bt tops with 2 Alto TS312s subwoofers. Which one is the best pick for the best sound? thanks!
First post. New to podcasts, video, and reddit. I recorded a few rehearsal episodes but haven't posted anything yet.
Thought it might be fun to do a little blind test / shootout video to help myself and others decide between the Shure SM7B, Rode BroadCaster, Rode ProCaster, or ElectroVoice RE20.

Which mic sounds best to you?
No Cloudlifters used in this recordingβwith 100 dBA of dynamic range on the fairly quiet RodeCaster Pro mic preamps, any cold dynamic microphone would benefit from one but it isn't 100% necessary.
Hello all! Hope you are staying well. As some of you may know, the legendary Electrovoice RE-15 has been discontinued for longer than a decade. I own the RE-20, as close as it may come - it just isnβt the same.
They were used in every professional studio throughout the late '60s and '70s, and also extensively as a broadcast mic. RCA used it as a studio vocal mic for Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton among others. The Beach Boys used it for acoustic guitars when recording "Pet Soundsβ and they also sound amazing on drums.
It is considered to be one of the best dynamics ever made. Iβve yet to find any under $500 Canadian before shipping, and although I know other microphones made by EV around the same time that have the same capsule, there are transformer differences, etc and there isnβt a guarantee that they wonβt be duds, have some sort of damage or non OEM parts because Electrovoice wonβt service them anymore due to no longer having the parts
Thank you
I wanted to plug this mic, because my experience with it has been nothing short of awesome, it's very affordable, and I'm frankly surprised that I don't see more discussion about it. It's an omni dynamic, and has historically been popular for newscasting, talk shows (Eric Andre anyone?), and as a talkback mic on consoles. But it makes a great instrument mic too! I reach for it when I'm looking for a dark, smooth, 'vintage' sound - to make an admittedly shoddy comparison, it almost has more of a 'ribbon'-like quality than many modern dynamics.
It's become my go-to for electric guitar when I'm not fighting against a bad room sound, almost totally supplanting my SM57. The omni pattern allows you to jam it right up against the grill without any proximity effect, and it lacks the 'presence peak' of a 57, which I often find annoying. The result is an honest, neutral, midrange-focused tone, and it captures plenty of ambience. I've also used it on bass cabs, blended with a DI or an LDC to extend the low end. If you're playing a Jazz Bass or something, in a relatively dead room, and you don't need a lot of subs in your bass tone, it might do fine on its own, but YMMV.
It's also very cool on drums. It's my go-to drum room mic, either alone or in an M/S config with a Fat Head as the side mic. It's also great as a 'crotch' mic, wedged somewhere between the batter side of the kick and the snare drum. If you get the placement right, it will pick up the whole kit very nicely with plenty of ambience. I've gotten incredible drum sounds with a Fat Head as an overhead and a 635a in the crotch position. The limited HF response helps to de-emphasize 'brash' cymbal sounds - great for heavy-handed drummers who bash the cymbals too hard.
It also works well on vocals - particularly aggressive/screaming punk vocals in my experience. Again, the lack of proximity effect allows the vocalist to practically 'eat' the mic without sounding muddy, and it lacks the annoying sibilance-emphasis that I often get from a close 57.
The only real downside is that it's not very sensitive, so you need a low-noise preamp with a lot of gain if you want to use it on quiet sources. This isn't really an issue for amplifiers or drums, but YMMV with quiet vocalists. I feel like it can lend a lo-fi vibe to practically any instrument, and would like to try it on acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica, but the sensitivity is definitely more of an issue in those applications.
MSRP is $140. It's built like

Looking to offload a few things. My custom cables finally come in Friday so I'm selling off these extensions. Fans were used for about 1 month. Comes with original packaging and accessories. As for the mic and shockmount, I literally got it set up less than a week ago. It sounds great it just has a large footprint and I'd like to downsize to an SM7B.

Hello! I have a bar with 4 Electrovoice Evid 6.2 speakers... My current receiver/amp died after a solid 10 years of continuous usage. Basically I need advice on a new one that can drive all 4 speakers. Basic info on the speakers is they are 8 ohms each and have max continuous wattage of 300w (600w peak). Would ideally like to spend under $500 and get something that can get as close to handling the 300w per speaker as occasionally we do crank up the music. Thanks in advance!

What I want:
Alice -- I've had an alice-knockoff/clone for about three days and I can already tell that I need another one so I can have one at home and one at the office. But, I want one that doesn't come with a stacked-layer case.
GMK sets -- maybe Terminal R2? Idk what's good. Need stuff that works on an Alice. No weeb keys pls (I already have laser kobe on my work ergodox and that's enough)
Artisans -- I'm mostly interested in colorswaps. Or if you have like a garbo or something.
a note about the electrovoice. I haven't used it in like 4ish years and I no longer have means of actually testing it out. So, I'd like to trade it with someone local to the DMV area who can come shake me down if there are any issues OR someone with whomst I've dealt with before and knows that I'm not skam.
All else being equal (including price not being a concern, ideal recording setup, etc.), which of these two would you choose for podcasting? I love the looks and specs of both of these mics and I may be able to purchase one or the other in the near future.
Just to be clear, while I understand that some of you may have an opinion about other mics that may be a better bang for the buck, or that have superior specs, etc., I would appreciate if everyone would keep it just between these two mics, please.
For your convenience:
Thanks in advance!
The microphone is in perfect working shape with the original packaging.

I'm an old radio guy and for 25 years we've been using EV RE20 mics for our production studios almost exclusively. Now I'm building a home studio, mainly so my wife can do a podcast, but partly because it will be convenient for me to have a home studio.
Question: Is there a mic that stands up to the RE20 sound-wise, in your opinion, and costs less than an RE20 (which at last glance shows as $449/new at reputable online shops)?
I'm buying tomorrow.
Hello fellow Let's Players, hope you all are having a great day. I am very new to Reddit so please excuse my noobishness. Anyways, I have been using a Yeti Blackout Edition and it has been working okay for me so far. My biggest problem with it is that I feel I spend copious amounts of time editing and tweaking the audio, then when I hear the audio later I wind up hating it and start over again. I'm looking at buying a new one but I can't decide if I should get an RE 20 or SM7B. Both of these mics have a huge reputation in the community and are around the same price. I've been doing some research on both and can't really decide which one I should get.
Do you guys have any suggestions or opinions? I tend to be a little on the quiet side when recording things and my mic form isn't super great. In addition, I'd like to try to avoid heavy amounts of editing on the audio. Does one of these mics better fit this profile? Will one of them better fit my voice? All suggestions are welcome and thank you so much in advance!
Hello! I'm looking to get rid of both the microphone and shock mount. I'm looking for $400 + shipping costs for both. The microphone is in like-new condition and will be sanitized before shipment.
