The Last Duel - Brilliant 2021 movie

As a non American kid who adored Good Will Hunting, the film had me piqued when I heard Damon & Affleck were coming back together.. Add Ridley Scott ( Motherfucking Cherry on top of this Chocolate Cake ).

It is a nuanced poetic mature yet brutal drama with story told from 3 main protagonist perspectives leading upto final 30 min of Ass- clenching showdown bw Mullet weilding Damon & Cape Swisher Adam while horny Affleck enjoys from sidelines with sensible Jodie waiting for some wood spanking.

I think I understand why Ridley criticized kids & teenagers for box office of this movie because it's really different from recent period/ fantasy themes drama in terms of the way it deals with a Court Politics, role of gender/ men's pride in a more mature way ( definitely could be addition of Female writer Nicole) . Even the scene where Jodie Comer modesty is trifled with- its shot in such a respecting way purely brought to life by perfomance & less with cheap theatrics.

Dare I say I would watch this movie again on a big screen just so I can add some revenue to their collections. Also the scale of this film in some way reminded me of The Last Samurai ( Edward Zwick -Tom Cruise ) because there were real shots & less CG.

Please give this movie a chance to those who haven't seen it till now.

Which single movie in some director's filmography doesn't fit the rest of the body of his work?

I'm just rewatching Never Go Back and I can't believe Tom Cruise actually talked Edward Zwick into directing it. While I enjoyed most of Edward Zwick's movies it seems eccentric for director of Glory, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Last Samurai and Legends of the Fall to tackle very generic action flick.

What's worse - the plot is weak and Zwick despite having impressive experience in directing massive battle scenes isn't as skillful in directing small-scale guns'n'fists action. Because the movie is very direct-to-DVD (or streaming) quality and Tom Cruise seems to be the only vessel carrying it (unsuccessfully).

It's also a shame, because I'll admit that first Jack Reacher movie seemed to be of very good quality, probably thanks to modern action movie expert Christopher McQuarrie, who's having a very successful streak. Jack Reacher is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. Never go back is bad and doesn't fit into Edward Zwick's filmography.

Another examples I can think of:

  • upcoming West Side Story by Steven Spielberg from whom I would never expect a musical
  • Hugo by Martin Scorsese from whom I would also never expect such fantastic film for younger audience given his violent filmography

Do you know any other that you would recommend or didn't like at all, because it's so disconnected?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. What the hell happened here?

So lately I decided to watch the Jack Reacher movies. The first one is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. While it's not a classic, I thought it was really well directed by Christopher MacQuarrie and I thought Tom Cruise captured the essence of the character quite well. The score is decent. The action sequences are really well filmed and edited. I'd go as far as to say that the car chase sequence is one of the better ones I've seen over the last few years and reminded me a lot of the car chase sequence in the Bourne Identity.

Today I watched the sequel directed by Edward Zwick. I really love the Last Samurai so I had moderate hopes that this movie would be at least on par with the first one. This movie is horrible. The direction is poor. The editing is frustratingly choppy even during non action sequences. The action sequences are lacklustre and boring. The score is generic at best and b-grade at worst. The story is forgettable. What the hell happened here? It felt almost like Tom Cruise was only in this to fulfill some contractual obligation. He looked bored throughout this movie. I think this might be one of the worst sequels to a movie I've seen in a long time.

100 Days, 100 Movies.

Hello movie lovers of Reddit, in June I thought of watching a movie a day for just that month, but I loved doing this and like a habit, I continued with it. I'm excited to share the list of all the movies I've watched in the past 100 days, but before that, here's some info: About 10 of them are rewatches but I had not seen them in many years to the point where I've forgotten so much of the movie. I don't watch trailers and begin watching them without knowing what to expect. I began documenting all the movies I watched on my notes since March 2020 (Just became aware of Letterboxd a couple months ago). Lastly, for some days I chose to watch 90 minute movies due to timing but all 100 were enjoyable except for 2. Anyway here's the list:

  1. Edge of Tomorrow
  2. No Country for Old Men
  3. The Nun
  4. Tropic Thunder -- No way this would be made today.
  5. RocknRolla
  6. The Outsider
  7. The Dark Tower
  8. Defiance -- Love Daniel Craig, war/military films and Edward Zwick. In my 86 days on Reddit, I haven't seen a single soul praise Zwick. I wonder why?
  9. Geostorm
  10. Schindler's List -- Man this movie was heavy. 10/10
  11. Wild Bill (2011)
  12. Dinner for Schmucks
  13. Gladiator -- The only movie I rewatched after watching it for the first time last October. Loved the movie and they were playing it at my local cinema. Had to witness this beauty on the big screen.
  14. Black Water: Abyss -- I like most of the movies I watch. Hell, I even enjoyed Army of the Dead, but this was the worst movie I had seen up until this point in my life. The whole movie was predictable, but I would have looked past that if the actors were convincing enough. 3/10 for the crocodile.
  15. Revolutionary Road -- Never go wrong with Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes.
  16. Happy Gilmore
  17. Fences -- Loved Denzel Washington and Viola Davis' performance in this.
  18. Vacation
  19. The Invention of Lying
  20. The Big Lebowski
  21. Unbroken
  22. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  23. Intolerable Cruelty
  24. Burn After Reading -- I quote this movie on a regular. The dialogue in this movie is hilarious.
  25. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs -- Went on a little Coen Brothers binge.
  26. Ghost Town
  27. The Dead Don't Die
  28. Midnight in Paris
  29. The Terminal
  30. The Truman Show
  31. The Italian Job (1969)
  32. The Call (2013)
  33. Bullet Head
  34. Hancock
  35. Jarhead
  36. Along Came Polly
  37. 2 Guns
  38. Love Story
  39. American Gangster -- Love 'Gangster' movies including this.
  40. Just Friends (2005)
  41. Rumour Has I

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
