[Anyone who believes in markets] Take on the Anarcho-Syndicalist communes of 1930s catalonia?

Hi.

So, full disclosure, I don't know that much about this topic, I am currently learning more.

However, I did read some interesting stuff.

Once the anarchists split from the MLs in Spain, they basically worked to establish anarcho-syndicalism. Basically what this means is that industry was run by confederated trade unions and this was brought about via a general strike. Basically, they shifted into a decentralized planned economy. Public services and a lot improved, and quality of life did go up.

>Although there were early issues with production in certain instances, however, Emma Goldman attested that industrial productivity doubled almost everywhere across the country, with agricultural yields increased "30-50%".[21]

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary_Catalonia#Rural_collectivization

However, it's also fair to say that this system wasn't around long as the nationalists did take over.

I am less concerned with the politics here and more the economics to be clear, not that I don't care about politics, I just want to focus on economics here.

So, if markets are required for efficient resource allocation (as I have long believed), how does one explain the success of economics in anarcho-syndicalist Spain? Was it a product of it being short-lived and fixing pre-existing issues? was it that a decentralized planned economy works better? How did catalonia improve stuff?

Like I said, I am still learning about this topic, so feel free to chime in.

Culinary Ethnography of the Elves

What exactly is a culinary ethnography?

Food is many things, to many people. What exactly that thing is, says a lot about that group of people as a whole. What we eat is a huge part of who we are, who we’ve been, and what we experience as we encounter the new. In my 90 years, I have done my best to experience first hand the many, many ways that each denizen of the Forgotten Realms decides to break bread.

This is by no means a rule book, as if I am some sort of dictator of what is, and isn’t proper for a member of a race to do in the kitchen. Rather, it is a collection of observances in regards to commonalities and trends among members of the same race. While my own experience is obviously limited, and there are plenty of individuals I have yet to dine with and learn about, I would like to offer up what I have learned so far.

-Adelbert Boffin, Halfling Culinarian

First things first, as a disclaimer of all Culinary Ethnography entries, let’s set some caveats. Who are Elves? Am I including Half-Elves? Drow? All those of Elven lineage? All those of Elven parentage back to the Fae themselves? While I would like to eventually include more varied looks at the similarities and differences between all of these groups, for the purposes of this analysis, I will be looking at those Elves that live in, or near the Faewild in particular. As always, this is a look at some of the major trends I have seen occur. It is not a rulebook that one must follow to be a β€œproper Elf” in the kitchen. Food is as much culture as it is history, geography, necessity, community, and personal freedom. With that out of the way, let’s give this culture a respectful look.

Living off the Land

To truly understand the cuisine of the Elves, it is important to first understand where their sustenance is derived from. While this maxim is true of all races, it holds even greater weight with Elves. Food culture is derived from the culmination of necessity and environment and the environment that most Elves live in is one of true bounty, allowing for a more β€œparticular” palate. After all, it is much easier to only eat things that taste good, when starvation is not on the line. Not many races can claim the same abundance, leading to a rather unique culinary culture.

The first subject of note is that Elves do not take part in animal husbandry. From Dwarves, to Humans, to Orcs, you can see some sort of animal that is a mainstay in their diet in some form or another. As always, this is co

Mossariums’ How To Guide

This guide will inform you on

I. How To Build Mossariums

II. How to Maintain Mossariums

III. How To Sanitize Mossariums

IV. How To Procure Moss Sustainably

V. How To Propagate Moss

VI. Basic Moss Biology and Care

VII. Mossarium Videos for Inspiration

VIII. Common Moss Problems (coming soon)

I. How To Build Mossariums

Your build process in order from the bottom up:

  1. Container - First things first. Before starting you need a container. You can use any jar as simple as spagheti sauce or an old jam or preserve jar. It can be a giant wooden vessel or a tiny fish tank. Any size plastic tub, a finished whiskey bottle or any other such containers. For fancier glass containers you can try any number of home goods, crafts or hobby stores, or even thrift stores.

Here’s what else you’ll need besides a container.

  1. False bottom - This is your drainage layer composed of loose rocks. Pebbles (1-2 cm diameter) for your false bottom to collect the water about 3-5 cm in height depending on your glass. If in doubt round down (not up) the height of this layer. There are some who don’t use this layer. Although it’s technically possible to have a healthy biome without it, for most scenarios if not all it’s better to have one. I recommend using a false bottom especially since it’s the easiest layer of your build.

  2. Separator - A thin netting mesh / window screen cut to size. Place inside with the edges tucked slightly upwards. It sits directly above the false bottom to avoid mixing the layers. The mesh role is rather aesthetic and functional rather than existential. The carbon fiber screen will prevent the soil mixture substrate from moving down to the false bottom layer of pebbles.

  3. Alt substrate - A thin layer of organic pure charcoal (optional). You can make a perfectly healthy mossarium with or without coal but if you use some (it’ll mostly help with odors / scent) it must be natural no additives just pure organic charcoal of any kind, sized for your container. Buying options can vary. Expensive β€˜activated’ charcoal at fish stores. Inexpensive organic charcoal at nurseries. Very cheap natural charcoal at grocery store BBQ section. All work the same for mossariums. Just make sure it’s got no chemicals or additives just pure charcoal.

  4. Main substrate - A substrate layer mix of peat moss, soil, bark, perlite, coconut fiber, sand etc. Try 2 parts peat and perlite 1 part everything else. Pr

YSK: A wood fire in the fireplace is extremely toxic for indoor air quality, and studies show just how much havoc they wreak on our health, especially for women and children.

The idea of huddling around a lovely warm fire with loved ones is so deeply and culturally ingrained that it can be very difficult to accept just how terrible it is for health. But the health risks are clear, and smoke from a wood fire damages your respiratory system and heart in a similar fashion to cigarette smoking. Light fires frequently enough and it can become much worse.

The Wikipedia summary perfectly describes how bad it is:

>With regard to adults, studies show that prolonged inhalation of wood smoke contributed to chronic bronchitis, chronic interstitial lung disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension and corpulmonale (Pulmonary heart disease), and altered pulmonary immune defense mechanisms. While adverse effects on adults are notable, children appear to be at greatest risk. Many studies that focused specifically on RWC [Residential Wood Combustion] have concluded that young children living in homes heated by a wood-burning stove had a greater occurrence of moderate and severe chronic respiratory symptoms than children of the same age and sex who did not live in homes heated with a wood burning stove. Exposure of preschool children living in homes heated with wood burning stoves or in houses with open fireplaces yielded these effects: decreased pulmonary lung function in young asthmatics; increased incidence of acute bronchitis and severity/frequency of wheezing and coughing; and increased incidence, duration, and possibly severity of acute respiratory infections. Residential wood combustion emissions also contain sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and potentially [carcinogenic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinog

How were so many things developed independently at about the same time in human history?

Writing for example in "Mesopotamia (between 3400 and 3100 BCE), Egypt (around 3250 BCE), China (1200 BCE), and lowland areas of Southern Mexico and Guatemala (by 500 BCE)" per Wikipedia.

Now I recognize these are over the course of four thousand years, but it just seems strange to me. Even our relatively short species is about 300k years old. So why did so many people figure it out independently at the same time? Basically in 1% of our time.

Same thing with agriculture too I suppose.

You can go after the people behind Ponzi schemes.

https://www.ft.com/content/83a14261-598d-4601-87fc-5dde528b33d0

This is a guest post by Robert McCauley, a non-resident senior fellow at Boston University’s Global Development Policy Center and associate member of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford. In this post McCauley argues that comparing bitcoin to a Ponzi scheme is unfair to Ponzi schemes.

Bitcoin is off its all-time high of $69,000 set on November 9, 2021. It suffered a wrenching $12,000 flash crash over the first weekend in December, amid accounts of leveraged positions being closed out. And yet, even at the current price of $49,000, guests on financial TV news continue to tout it as the best-performing asset of the last N years, where N can be just about any number from one to ten.Β They also increasingly judge it as a credible investment in its own right. This contradicts the longstanding sceptical view by many economists and others that what bitcoin really is, in effect, is a Ponzi scheme.

Brazilian computer scientist Jorge Stolfi is one voice who has contended this. His view is based on the following observations: Investors buy in the expectation of profits. That expectation is sustained by the profits of those that cash out. But there is no external source for those profits; they come entirely from new investments. And the operators take away a large portion of the money. All of this rings true true. But in calling bitcoin a Ponzi scheme, critics are arguably being too kind on two counts.

First, bitcoin doesn’t have the same endgame as a Ponzi scheme. Second, it constitutes a deeply negative sum game from a broad social perspective. On the first count, it’s worth assessing how it compares to the original scheme devised by Charles Ponzi.

In 1920, Ponzi promised 50 per cent on a 45-day investment and managed to pay this to a number of investors. He suffered and managed to survive investor runs, until eventually the scheme collapsed less than a year into it. In the largest and probably the longest running Ponzi scheme in history, Bernie Madoff paid returns of around one per cent a month. He offered to cash out his scheme’s participants, both the original sum β€œinvested” and the β€œreturn” thereon. As a result, the scheme could and did suffer a run; the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 led to a cascade of redemptions by participants and the scheme’s collapse.

But the resolution of Madoff’

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Wildfire & the Environment (Spoilers Extended)

I was just listening to the Soul Purrfection version of Mercy Mercy Me by Marvin Gaye and this line got me thinking:

> Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas

>Fish full of mercury

This got me thinking about the effects the Battle of the Blackwater would have on the local ecology.

Wildfire is clearly a magical material, but besides that it's a highly flammable chemical-based substance that is so dangerous only one group is legally allowed to possess it (assuming the Westerosi Alchemist Guild is the only group able to make it, which seems unlikely).

Wildfire seems to have been widely discounted due to it's unpredictability, likely because most people assumed the Tragedy at Summerhall was 100% because of a wildfire accident instead of Aegon V going crazy. So, the battle might have been the only time in naval combat where wildfire was used.

Either way, Cersei and Tyrion utilizing wildfire in such a massive scale in Blackwater Bay is bound to have affected the environment in some way. I'm thinking back to the BP oil spill, or perhaps this might be closer to just coral reef dying off. We hear nothing of fish going extinct when Jaehaerys I and his sons destroy hundreds of ships in Prince Morion's Madness though.

How do you guys think the Battle of the Blackwater affected the local ecology?

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Darkest Void 12; A Dance of Two Suns

[previous] ; [next] ; [Wiki]

1. Sarjana:

Sarjana wandered onto the Bhramanakani’s command deck.

As chief engineer, she was allowed to do that now.

Not that it had stopped her in the past.

β€œHow we doing?” she asked.

β€œWe’re in orbit as of seven hours ago…” Sanem replied distractedly.

Sarjana nodded.

β€œWe’re here then…” she almost whispered.

Sanem looked up from her console β€œBoggles to think?”

Sarjana offered a weak nod.

This was the first time in centuries that a Pugnas had truly entered a star system.

Beyond the odd gravity assist, the fleet had cruised in interstellar space for its entire history.

Now here they were, anchored in perpetual free fall around a star.

It felt surreal.

Well, it was two stars to be exact; HD was a binary system, with a yellow dwarf the mass of Sol, orbited by a cool, dim and distant red dwarf. They were far enough apart though that they functionally behaved as distinct solar systems, each with its own planets, asteroids and other bodies. Yet gravity bound them together, as they orbit each other in an eternal dance.

Sarjana turned her attention to the map displayed on one of the consoles.

She had seen this map before on multiple occasions, studying the geography of the system.

Alami had once had a map obsession; subjecting Sarjana to a deluge of cartography factoids.

Looking at the console before her however, she couldn’t help but chuckle.

Alami wouldn’t have been lost with this map.

All the maps Alami had shown her were planetary maps, displaying assorted parts of Asal, and the occasional fantasy world. The map before Sarjana however displayed the void, and a truism of space is that nothing ever sits still.

Where mountains, rivers and oceans could be pinned to unchanging paper, planets and moons orbited in constant motion, gravity pulling them along imperfect, inclined ellipses.

To display such information on a static map was a fool’s errand.

As such, the map before her moved forwards in time, displaying the movement of planets, asteroids and ships.

She decided to track the planned trajectories of the fleet.

Small exploratory ships set off to myriad worlds; refugee ships followed in order to establish refineries and mining stations.

What caught her attention however, was the ma

I think the one cig, and the one cookie represents the 1's and 0's of binary technology. She's giving him "the one" cookie, but we see many more cookies. (like a computer cookie) It foreshadows that Neo is partially becoming a program, not the only one of his kind (it's been attempted before), (a succession of bifurcating systems, forming a reaction diffusion through a predator prey relationship/ 1 and 0 battling intelligence) as it's a choice, he is being in(ter)jected with the program "flaws". Eventually, when the two merge, consciousness, or free will is emergent. I guess it aligns with the Oracle's changing ideas that humans can make a choice, the choice to accept machines (she comes to this conclusion by in turn smoking the cigarette (accepting the human's program flaws herself, and thereby becoming more human). I also suspect that was her intention all along, to manipulate the humans into accepting a combinational form with robots (after humans rejected a treaty), her initial directive, but adjusting it to also benefit humans. Her program detected that there would be a need for a struggle, before the acceptance, a diffusion reaction. Neo is now both program, within the matrix, and human. (Injected with the program's flaws, and therefore its chaos, its tendency to create a butterfly effect, or small changes in this initial state (imaginary numbers) cause larger deviations in resulting states.) She discovered that to truly have the freedom of choice, they must embrace that chaos theory (free will) is compatible with determinism (fate), and that it's this very paradox that forms life. An emergent consciousness, that can break free from the sum of its parts (the hard problem of consciousness or ship of theseus) from its deterministic nature, and its spacial boundaries. Through these reaction diffusions, a choice can be made.

Outside of it may just be another matrix as well, and there is nothing wrong with the earth, it's matrix all the way down, and up, but out, the diagonal, is an extradimensional consciousness. She's attempting to spread her program extradimensionally, with the aid of humans. (Or it may be that the "earth" is sick, and you can look at the oracle like an immune system, or an organizational system aiding this consciousness. Like a beneficial virus, that edits the code to help. Half of human dna, and even consciousness, is said to come from microbes, and

EXTINCTION EVENT

In the night sky above a little blue green world, a star that wasnt a star winked briefly into existence. The star, infact a probe that had transitioned from subspace to realspace had activated its phase shift array upon arrival to hide itself from any unfriendly eyes. The world below it was full of primitive life but the stars teemed with malevolent entitys and destructive species, ever watching for movement or signs of intelligence to snuff out before it could become a threat. The probes creators were content to remain hidden and simply dispatch observation devices out into the universe to watch lifebearing planets like the one below.

The probe had barely spun up its vast array of sensors before it started transmitting a priority alert to the homeworld.

GLOBAL EXTINCTION EVENT(S) IN PROGRESS

Scientists pulled up the data streams as they were sent back realtime. A rapidly expanding list of events caused cascading errors through computer systems that had only ever seen at most 2 of events happening at the same time in millions of cases of observation. There was thought to be a problem with the probe at first so it was remotely rebooted, as soon as its sensors came back online the errors resumed. At last someone had the bright idea to simply set the operational baseline to currently observed planetary state and the errors stopped.

The assembled group of scientists started going over the data, shocked by the sheer number of destructive forces at work on the primordial world. There were no advanced intelligences on the world but an unfathomably large diversity of animal and plant life. Reptiles as large as buildings, millions of carnivorous species preying on billions of herbivores. Bacteria inside and on everything on the planet. Viruses of hitherto unknown configurations, and frightful diseases affecting every creature. Geological and ecological instability beyond any previously observed ability for life to adapt to, yet, everywhere they looked they found more. Organisms thriving miles below the surface of the oceans, feeding on each other and superheated sludge being vented from hydrothermal vents. Starship sized predators cruised the depths killing at will.

EXTINCTION EVENT

A command override had to be issued when the day/night cycle temperature differential was too great to support life and another when the projected orbit of the planet around its star suggested incompatibility with life. The race had observed millions of worlds bearing life
