A list of puns related to "Ecological Succession"
If plants in the desert (or just xeric ecologies) grow and die and decompose, more organic matter is added to the soil. That should eventually lead to something other than a desert growing, which allows for more evaporation and more rain and then more complex ecology right? What am i misunderstanding?? Maybe this is too complex for eli5 but i didnβt feel like it belonged in r/biology. Thanks smart peeps!
I've recently heard about permaculture and am interested in learning more and trying to get started. I listened to an interview with Oliver Goshey where he stated that weeds merely indicate that a plot of land is going through ecological succession, and trying to reach a later state, and that a smart manager can help along to that later state and be rid of the weeds. Is this true even in the case of invasives? Specifically, is my yard trying to reach a later succession state when it starts to drown in blackberries? If so, what can I do to move it to a later succession state?
Edit: should have mentioned that I live in Northern California with a pretty dry Mediterranean climate.
Hi folks! Hoping to get some help with the above, not sure if there are any resources out there on this topic. I am a layman in terms of astrobiology, interested in the topic for worldbuilding/fiction writing purposes and just because it's an awesome topic.
The premise is the following: if we were to successfully terraform a planet similar to earth in size and mass, with a magnetic field and a "base" atmosphere relatively similar in composition, water oceans and a similar total landmass, what would the final ecosystem have to look like for it to be stable and self-sustaining?
I presume you would need a rather extensive selection of imported/engineered species to form food chains in order to ensure populations remain controlled without constant intervention - but I suppose it might not need to have to be a 1:1 copy of earth's biodiversity either. What species might be left out as "redundant"? Which ones would be absolutely indispensable?
I don't expect there to be any one correct answer to this question, but any indications or thoughts from people more qualified than myself would be very helpful.
Thanks!
I got the following question wrong on a quiz but am unsure of why. I chose D, and my teacher says it is B. Could anybody please explain?

Looking for a hands-on lab, game, or online activity that teaches principles of ecological succession for my community college class. Any leads or ideas welcome! Ok if it requires purchasing mild supplies :]
