A list of puns related to "Contra Dancing"
Yikes!
Update: I went! I had fun! I am very out of shape and could only manage 2.5 dances! Definitely planning to go again and build up my stamina!
Anyone know where to go? I grew up out near Albany doing tons of contra dancing and I'm looking to get back into it.
I consider myself pretty experienced but would definitely prefer a laid-back beginner friendly atmosphere so I can bring friends!
My friend told me about contra many months ago, but we havenβt been able to go and I really want to try it tonight.
Itβs basically a mix of square and swing dancing. To learn more about it, you can read here: http://www.brooklyncontra.org/what
Message me if ya wanna come with! The lesson for beginners starts at 7:30pm. (26/f)

Hey! My name's Madison, and I'm currently trying to gauge interest about starting a contra dancing club at UTD. Regardless of whether or not you know what that is, your responses to this less-than-five-minute-long survey would be greatly, greatly appreciated. https://utdallas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8kA8eBMHxZDBE33 Thanks so much in advance! Feel free to DM me for details.
Hi r/rit,
Does anyone on here go to the Rochester dance Thursday nights? I donβt have a car and would love to join a car pool (and donβt mind contributing to gas)...
Anyways, the dance tomorrow is GREAT so please, please get back to me ASAP.
Thanks!
Looking to get my do si do on, heard that Grey Eagle no longer does contra. I know there's Warren Wilson, but are any local bars picking up the tradition?
Anyone into Contra Dancing at UCF? I heard someone was trying to start a club.

The local contra dancing group (FOOTMAD - Friends of Old Time Music And Dance) is having a contra dance at the YWCA downtown. No partner needed! Beginner lesson starts at 7pm. $10
Contra is social partner dancing similar to square dancing. Itβs a lot of fun and good exercise. We also have live music and a caller. :)
Have you ever been interested in dancing, but you don't know where to start? Come try contra dancing! This is a fantastic social dance that requires nothing but the ability to walk, follow basic directions, and an appreciation for live music. Our next dance is on Friday, June 22, at the Event Place in Middletown, and your first dance is free! The lesson for beginners starts at 7:30, and dancing to live music, provided by Ginger Majority, starts at 8:00. You do not need a partner, just comfortable shoes. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!
Tonight at the Elks club @ 25 South Allen Street, there will be contra dancing from 8-11.
Never been? From 730-8 they are teaching basics. I'm pretty sure it's 10 a head (less with a student id looking at the website).
My neighbor and her friends are dragging me to this. I don't have a partner but it sounds kind of fun! I've always wanted to try line dancing or traditional folksy crap like this. If you go early they spend extra time teaching you for free. We're hitting a whiskey bar and then heading over, so either way it should be a good time!
I've contra'd for a while, but am new to the scene here. The interwebz have a couple places and times they claim do it, but I've been burned by ancient information before. Can anyone confirm anywhere that's active? Their personal favorite place to do it (since different contras often have vastly different communities/flavors)?
I'll be moving to Charleston in the summer and was curious- are there any good venues with frequent contra dancing?
Hey crowd. Does anyone know about contra dancing at the Swisshelm community center just south of Frick Park on Friday nights? I'd like to go. I went once, in another life, but now I find myself here again, and some tame intergenerational fun is all that will seem to fill the thirst for a night activity. How does one get there sans car?/ Does it still happen?
One thing I've always enjoyed is Contra Dancing. Now before you guys are like, "I'm a Redditor/nerd/whatever Idon'tDance...," Contra Dancing is super easy. A caller give everyone a simple pattern and you dance to cool old timey music. It's similar to square dancing and the type of dancing you seen in movies that take place during early colonialism.
There's a live band, $15 ($10 students) and it started at 7:30pm at St. Michaelβs Church Hall in Kelburn.
You might try it and hate it, but everyone should at least try it. It's super fun.
I realize this got funded already, but Wayforward is taking paypal donations. I'd really love to see this reach the other stretch goals, especially Clockwork Night.

I originally didn't think this was important or helpful enough to post, but I recently learned something about the situation that makes it good enough to share.
I recently went to a weekly Contra dance in my neighborhood, as part of my general effort to be more social and practice being more attractive. My friend invited me, and I hadn't gotten a chance to practice any of the stuff I'd been reading on seddit, so I decided to go for it.
After a bit of dancing just for the fun of it, I decided to try and escalate. I saw this girl, HB 8, talking to her friend. I smiled at the both of them and asked her for a dance. While we danced I kept up some playful sexual banter, although I can't remember any of the specific lines now. I twirled her around a bit and tried to be leading.
Thinking back on it, I probably complemented her too much, a little too much pull without enough push. Over the rest of the night I danced with a few other people, but mostly with this girl. They ended the night with a waltz, and I since we were both staring into each other's eyes, that seemed like a good enough IOI to me, so I went for the kiss.
It turned into a bit of a makeout session, and we continued a little bit once we got off the dance floor. When I asked her for her number, she said that I'd get it at the dance next week. It was teasing, and sexy, and I assumed she was trying to prove I'm not a player, so I went along with it.
The next week didn't go nearly as well. She teased me plenty, but didn't let me escalate, and wouldn't respond to my banter as much. I think I was probably in the wrong mindset, hell, I'd bought condoms in case things went as well as they did the first week. We danced a little, but I think she avoided me, and at the end of the night she vaguely explained how she was snubbing me for some "guy-next-door" figure she already knew.
The fun part comes next. At the most recent dance, I got to talking with one of her friends; I don't know why he's so friendly with me given that I partially-seduced his friend. But we're talking, and it turns out that the girl had a boyfriend before and during the first and second dances.
So at the second dance, I didn't get snubbed for some random guy, I got snubbed for her actual boyfriend. Which means during the first dance, I partially-seduced her while she already had a boyfriend. Not only this, but throughout the small school she goes to, I am now rumored about as a womanizer.
Thank you gu

Apologies if I shouldn't'a posted this here.
Been lurking here for a while but am posting for the first time so here it goes:
As the title says I want to give a shout out to the contra dancing community for being accepting of people and their life choices, including relationship/marriage status and if you plan on having children or not. They wont judge you for not following the life script, and many of the members of the contra dance community are childfree/less and don't follow the lifescript, although I would never ask unless I knew the person well enough. (I'm childfree as well since I'm posting here.) So yeah, just wanted to give them a shout out for that reason, and to any contra dancers on this sub.
I am a 26 male and I have difficulties making friends as an adult.
Last year I signed up for different activities like the gym and yoga but I haven't had any success there. I live in a very big city and people usually mind their own business here. The times I have tried to strike up a conversation felt awkward and didn't get any signals from the other person the following classes, on top of that I was overthinking everything, so I left them alone.
The one place I had success in, was joining a Warhammer league, there I have started to get to know people but we really only talk about the game and leave when it is over, on top of that, it is a big time commitment so I only can attend like once or twice a month.
I was thinking about doing something more social such as dancing but I am worried that it might come off as creepy or weird. To be honest, the reasons why I thought dancing might be a good idea are because I would like to get to know new people, specially girls, and be able to talk to them about something that is not programming or plastic toys.
However I am very needy and insecure so, even if I know how to behave in a social setting, I am afraid that I am a walking self-fulfilling prophecy of loneliness, defeat and abandonment and will unavoidably convince myself that I am not well received or that I "have blown it".
PS: yes I have mental health providers.
Hello all.

Do your worst!
Hey r/SwingDancing!! I asked this question about a month back in r/Salsa, but forgot to carry it over here.
So as the title says, do you do any dances that are not considered part of the "swing" family? Do you actively participate in that scene? I get taking a few classes here and there but I'm curious on those that go to say Swing and Latin dance socials. Or Swing and Ballroom socials.
Personally for me, I started back in 2018. I never danced before in my life and then I just started to take a swing class to try to break out of my shell. A handful of beginners class and a few months down the road, I started to do swing dancing regularly! In 2019, I saw some stuff on Facebook talking about Salsa classes being taught. Then just like Swing Dancing, a few months later, I became a regular at the Salsa dance socials. At that time, I started seeing a lot of Salsa dancers dance Bachata. I felt left out since the "salsa socials" were often playing Bachata music as well. At the beginning of 2020, Bachata classes were being offered. I was about a month in and then...well you know..
In March of this year, as things were opening up again, I found regular Bachata classes to take. I fell in love with the dance and I even convinced two people from my swing dance group to take Bachata classes with me. One of the girls even went and started taking Salsa classes as well! Unfortunately, I had no luck with anyone else in my swing dance scene to try it out.
But I am curious on swing dancers outside my small dance scene. What is your story?! ππ
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
Is there contra dancing anywhere in the area?
Anyone know if there is any sort of Contra dancing in town?
