A list of puns related to "Contra Dances"
Been lurking here for a while but am posting for the first time so here it goes:
As the title says I want to give a shout out to the contra dancing community for being accepting of people and their life choices, including relationship/marriage status and if you plan on having children or not. They wont judge you for not following the life script, and many of the members of the contra dance community are childfree/less and don't follow the lifescript, although I would never ask unless I knew the person well enough. (I'm childfree as well since I'm posting here.) So yeah, just wanted to give them a shout out for that reason, and to any contra dancers on this sub.
Hello all.
Just want to do a little advertising for a Contra Dance taking place Saturday. Contra is type of folk dance that's very easy to pick up, great social environment, and great exercise. I'll leave the information from the organiser FB event. Would love to see you there if you've ever wanted to dabble in a partner dance.
"Come and join us for another fun contra dance on Saturday, January 4th, 2020! Live music, calling, good food and good fun! No partner necessary - just wear comfortable shoes and a smile! Bring your friends!
7th Street Loft, 504 South 7th Street, on the 3rd floor of The Bridge Behavioral Health Bldg.
Students $5.00 Adults $8.00 and 12 and under are Free. Maximum $20 per family."
Busch Gardens is closed for the season and Yankee Candle closes at 9. Without question, dancing the Virginia Reel is the most fun you can have between Richmond and Norfolk late Saturday Night. Mark your calendar and shine your dancing shoes, and come out to dance to the live music of the Friends of Appalachian Music!
March 7, 7:30 PM
The group is beginner-friendly and each dance will be taught and called: no experience required. Come alone or bring a friend! 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm at the Norge Community Hall, 7402 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg, VA. $10 suggested donation at the door.
I love dancing and my fiancΓ© is supportive of this idea - but many of our guests probably have not experienced square dancing before. I'd make sure to get a good caller who could teach in the beginning and only do the very basic moves/dances, but I'm unsure how this will turn out since so few people at the wedding will have done it. Has anyone done this? How did it go for you?
Birmingham FOOTMAD (Friends Of Old Time Music And Dance) is having a contra dance (think square dancing but more fun) tonight at the YWCA downtown. Beginner lesson starts at 7. $10. Itβs partnered social dancing but no partner needed to attend. Lately weβve needed more gent/leader dance roles. :) thereβs a live band, a caller, and a snack at halftime. Join us!

Everyone asks everyone to dance. We could use some extra βgentsβ at this dance if yβall are available :) wear something comfy.
Hi,
Does anyone know the name of the camp that was next to Rootpile? I saw a lot of line dancing. I heard that group meets up in the east bay. Does any one have contact info?

Personal testimonial: I am roughly familiar with which foot is left and which is right. Even I found it easy to catch on, though I don't do the fancy stuff. You don't need to dance perfectly. At these dances the most important thing is to have fun.
If you are looking for a non-booze related good time on NYE, come out to the YWCA downtown and give contra a try. Beginner lesson starts at 8:30 with the dance starting at 9. We will dance until midnight, then stop, ring in the new year, and have a few more dances (until around 12:30). There will be snacks, a live band, and a caller. $15.
Contra dancing is social partner dancing, but no partner is needed. Everyone dances with everyone!
Anyone have insight to the local contra dance group? Potentially interested.
I'm coming through town this weekend, and am wondering if there is a contra dance on Saturday evening. Also, are there any cyclists who would be interested in climbing Mt. Mitchell on Sunday morning? (I figure going as a pair is safer, I did the horsey hundred this year at a solid pace, so I should be able to hold my own with most riders).
For that spontaneous person who totally wants to go to the rally, doesn't exactly know where they are sleeping tonight (but i've got 3 open couch authorizations) and is down for a road trip, possibly top-down.
EDIT: its 1:50am, the dance was pretty good, I was told "why don't you dance here more often" and im ready for the rally! I'll have a seat open on the way back too, but i'm gunna post that on redditcarpool.
My neighbor and her friends are dragging me to this. I don't have a partner but it sounds kind of fun! I've always wanted to try line dancing or traditional folksy crap like this. If you go early they spend extra time teaching you for free. We're hitting a whiskey bar and then heading over, so either way it should be a good time!
Hey there. Visiting from Charlotte and am part of the contra group there. Wanted to know if anyone here is part of Winston-Salem contra groups and the time and place for dance this week.
Hey Richmond, there's a contra dance happening right now at Ginter Recreational Association, 3421 Hawthorne Ave. Wild Asparagus is playing the music. Cost is $14.
Come out to enjoy three hours of fantastic folk dancing and music!
Hey Hey,
So I'm pretty new to the area and want to get out and meet as many of the wonderful people around here as I can.
While I was in North Carolina, I grew to really enjoy contra dancing. I've done a bit of research and there seem to be quite a few dances around Boston, but I wanted to see if any of you regularly attend any of them and which ones you would recommend.
I can't wait to get back to it!
For nine bucks only this Friday, listen to three hours of live music, and learn American folk dance. We dance contras and squares. All dances are taught, no partner or experience is required. Best of all, the basic step is walking forward, something that most people do well, but even if you stumble, you'll have fun.
7:30 lesson, 8P dance with live music. Social hall, Second Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Boulevard, Nashville

From the facebook event listing for this Friday's dance:
Come celebrate Nueve de Mayo with HOT out-of-town musicians Pam Carson, Martha Edwards, and Karen Gaughan, with the skillful calling of BOB GREEN!!!! Bob's coming all the way from the great state of Illinois just to get you to show you the best contras and squares right here in Tennessee. When you bring your friends and your family to this extraordinary evening of dance, they will find out why contra dance is simply the best way to spend a Friday night in Nashville.
ALL DANCES TAUGHT. No partner required. Beginner's lesson at 7:30, and dance at 8.
What is Nueve de Mayo? It's definitely not a Mexican national holiday celebrating Mexican Independence-- that'd be September the 12-- but neither is Cinco de Mayo, either. This just proves that no excuse is too small to have a good time with friends and dance a little.
It's only nine bucks for adults, and seven bucks for the students. That's STILL less than the cost of a movie, a drink and cover charge at a bar, or an hour of contortion at your favorite yoga studio! With live music until from 8-10:30, it's the best deal in town.
‘‘‘‘BONUS!!!! ‘‘‘DOOR PRIZES!!!! Enter your name on our mailing list at the door to win FABULOUS PRIZES, like free admission next week, a cake, and/or FREE DANCE MUSIC CDS from your favorite dance bands.
‘‘‘‘YEEEHAW!!!!! Come dance, everybody, and tell your friends!
Googling always leads me to this one page, Contra dance in Hawaii, which says there are dances on the big island and Oahu. It doesn't say when or where the big island's contra dances happen, so I emailed the contact but never heard back. Do any of you know?
For Oahu, it lists one dance that happens every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday. Since my friend and I may be on Oahu the weekend before New Years, I wanted to confirm whether it's happening that Saturday (December 29th) - but again, emailed the contact listed on the web site (and left voicemail) and haven't heard back.
So I wonder whether any of you on this subreddit know anything about these contra dances, and how to find out or confirm when/where they're happening. Will there be any on the big island between Dec 28 - Jan 6th? Will the Oahu dance happen on Dec 29th and January 5th?
Are there contra dances on any of the other islands?
Edit: I was able to reach Darrow Hand today, and found out that the December 29th dance is not happening, but the January 5th dance is. Cool! Still trying to collect info about contra on the other islands.
Edit2: Heard back from the woman who organizes contra on the big island. Those apparently have no regular schedule, and the next one is more than a month away.
Come out to the Norge Community Hall at 7:30 tonight to dance to live Appalachian music! Every dance is taught and called, so no experience is necessary. Come alone or bring a friend. Suggested $5-10 donation at the door.
