TIL the word Columbia is used to honour Christopher Columbus. A great sailing ship was named Columbia, and its captain named the 2000km Columbia River (in BC) after it. When USA and Canada were defined, we added British to Columbia to avoid confusion with USA area also called Columbia at the time
When the states were forming, they wouldn't allow Columbia to keep its name as it may be confused with the District of Columbia, so the state opted for Wahington. Not long after this DC adopted Washington as well, which must have been as funny as it was frustrating at the time

[Another] radioactive leak found upstream on the Columbia River
The Columbia River runs through the Hanford Reservation in Washington. The management of waste over generations is shameful. The groundwater flows through contaminated areas and into the Columbia.

"Randy Bradbury, the Washington DOE communications manager, told CBS News that his department recognized that B-109's liquid level was decreasing more than a year ago, but that they weren't sure what was causing it. The Washington DOE were notified Thursday, however, that the tank was indeed leaking."

Oregonβs pika comeback -- In 2016, "Oregon Field Guide" introduced us to an isolated population of American pika living in the Columbia River Gorge. When the Eagle Creek Fire swept through in 2017, about half of those pika colonies seem to have been wiped out. Or were they?

STL transplants that moved here from Columbia, MO: What's your river route equivalent to escape the city?
If you're from Como, you know what I'm talking about. Several great areas to drive around outside city limits near the MO river.
I have lived in STL for years now and haven't found any good areas to escape to on a drive in a similar fashion. Fresh air and the smell of sweetgrass, no cops on every corner, and maybe even a cow or two would be cool.
Anyone?
EDIT: These are all great suggestions, thanks everyone!
