The β€œNew Front in the War on Terror” is going badly. [Part 2]

"When Adam farmed and Eve span,

Kyrie Eleison,

Who was then the gentleman?

Kyrie Eleison."

-Marching Song of the Black Company, Great Peasants War

There was a time, almost in living memory, when the Appalachian Mountains looked very different from what they do today. Before the 1890s, the hilltops and hollers were largely covered in chestnut trees rather than the modern forests of oak and pine. The region was heavily denuded in the early 20th century by outside mining and logging corporations, and by a fungal blight that rapidly killed most of the remaining chestnuts. Castanea dentata was deemed critically endangered by the 21st century, with conservation efforts ongoing before the collapse of civil authority throughout most of the United States.

Interestingly, although the trees themselves were all but extirpated from their native range many decades ago, a remnant of the underground root system still remains untouched by the blight. New chestnut seedlings will occasionally rise from the ancient loam and live for several years before inevitably succumbing, usually still well short of reproductive maturity.

One of these holdovers stood sentinel in a patch of sunlight on the edge of a wide firebreak. It would be killed, not by blight, but by a 155mm artillery shell that slammed to earth with a tea-kettle whine, tearing the trunk from the ground and throwing it javelin-like at a parked and camouflaged mobile command vehicle, where the overall commander of local revolutionary forces was directing her subordinates.

Colonel Marjorie Coulter Witt had been talking to her staff officers before the huge shell landed close enough to shake the ground beneath them. The occupants screamed in terror as dirt and shrapnel pinged off the sides. More rounds landed, but these much further away, closer to the retreating infantry that they were actually trying to hit. Sensing that the danger was over for now, she quickly righted herself and tried to resume her discussion.

β€œEveryone good? Alright… major, tell the company commanders to break contact the minute we hear of incoming hostile air cover. But if we have as much time as we think, and if we can weather this storm for now, then we should be able to break the Feds in the pass, especially once we unleash our newest secret weapon. So, if they don’t have any tricks of their own then... uh, major? Hey, Hoyt, what are you staring at?”

Having finally noticed the shock on her executive officer’s face, Colonel Witt follo

On the Concept of "Creative Nothing", and Being Non-Binary.

The idea of a "creative nothing" comes from the 19th-century philosopher Max Stirner in his magnum opus, "The Unique and its Property".

What does the creative nothing describe? It describes not a literal nothingness or a void, but this "nothing" is your nothing. Stirner believes that, although determinations of individuals (Man, Woman, Gay, Black, Chinese, American, etc. etc.) can describe a part of the individual, they fall far short. They can never fully describe what that individual is. So, then, if no word or set of words can ever conceptually describe you, what are you? To Stirner, you are "nothing".

"You aren't a word, you aren't a concept, you aren't an idea. You're more than all of this. You are Unique"^(1). A word is merely a word, it is not you, and as such, it can never define you in your entirety.

Stirner points out that when people are given a conceptual identity, they are then expected to abide by the social functions and conditions that are associated with that conceptual identity - a huge error in the individual's ability to be their genuine selves, as we already established, you aren't a concept.

Words act as descriptors of your Self, but should never be substituted for your Self. It is you that commands your descriptors and not the other way around. Think of the common enby adage "You don't owe anyone androgyny", as this is the clearest form of rejecting the social baggage that comes with "being non-binary". People; society, expect you to be this and that way for having "non-binary" as a descriptor of your Self, but it is in the rejection of their keen expectation to exist in such and such way that you become a more genuine you - unique.

"If we are to go β€œtowards the Creative Nothing”, as Novatore wrote, then we merely need to realize that we are already the creative nothing, that each of us, in our unique, lived and experienced existences, is creating ourselves from the creative nothing at every moment, and that all concepts and ideas are nothing but words to us, which we may use and destroy at our will."^(2)

Being non-binary is a harsh rejection of gender descriptors, instantaneously from the outset defying and obliterating every social expectation that comes of you for merely being born. It's a rejection of upholding femininity or masculinity for the sake of being born as a socially feminine or masculine empty canvas, but for enjoying feminity and masculinity because you have decided it's what you want to enjoy. You needn't

General, most likely previously asked questions

Hello, new to the whole story of the American Chestnut and would like to get involved in its conservation by possibly planting a specimen or two of my own.

I live in Central Oklahoma though, so my questions are... A) Is it even feasible for me to plant one in my climate in the first place (Zone 7a)? B) Where could I get reliably sourced seeds or saplings? C) Is there a way for someone like me to get on the waiting list for the GM trees that are cuurentlybeing developed? (I understand if priority is or should be given to the tree's historical range, which I'm outside of) D) Lastly if I plant a specimen here in OK thats not a GM am I doomed to suffer the blight no matter what or are there ways I could protect it?

Sorry if these are ignorant questions, this kind of plant related science and conservation highly interests me. TIA for any thoughts and advice!

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Looking for a Chestnut Tree (Ontario side)

Hey all! I'm a forestry student driving up to Thunder Bay next week. I'll be stopping in the Soo and I've heard whispers of an American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) tree being planted in the city somewhere. I have a great appreciation of the species and I'd love to see one in person. All my searching online has brought no results though!
