A list of puns related to "Campus Martius"
I was planning on proposing to my girlfriend at that time! Shhhh itβs a secret
It's 60 degrees today but I planned on ice skating downtown. Does anything know if thats still going to be possible with the warm weather today?
I have always wondered about why the centre of Rome seemed to move away from original hills (the pomerium area) to the west, closer to the river in the Campus Martius after the fall of the Roman West. Was it as simple as closer access to the water, the Aqua Virgo being one of the few aqueducts not destroyed, and defense being provided by the Aurelian Walls (and so not needing to be up on hilltops like pre-Roman history)?
Any sources I should look up that talk about this as well?
A new inscription from antiquity was recently found in the Campus Martius.
The slab, made from Roman travertine, reads: ]NSOR[ / ]CTIS POPVLI R[ / FINIBUS POMERIVM / AMPLIAβ²IT TERMINAβ²ITQVE
.
It is badly damaged but its identification is actually very easy:
This all points out to the extension of the pomerium by Claudius in 49 AD. This inscription is a pomerium marker.

The rest of the text can be inferred from other identical cippi. See for instance, this picture of CIL 6, 31537:

We can therefore restore the text of our damaged inscription, especially the last four lines (although we have no reason to doubt the rest was also identical): CE]NSOR [P(ater) P(atriae)] / AV]CTIS POPVLI R[OMANI] / FINIBUS POMERIVM / AMPLIAβ²IT TERMINAβ²ITQVE
"(Claudius) censor and father of the fatherland, the limits (of the territory) of the Roman People having been augmented, enlarged and delimited the pomerium."
More information can found in Tacitus, Annales, 12.24 (English translation):
>*Regum in eo ambitio vel gloria varie vulgata: sed initium condendi, et quod pomerium Romulus posuerit, noscere haud absurdum reor. igitur a foro boario, ubi aereum tauri simulacrum aspicimus, quia id genus animalium aratro subditur, sulcus designandi oppidi coeptus ut magnam Herculis aram amplecteretur; inde certis spatiis interiecti lapides per ima montis Palatini ad aram Consi, mox curias veteres, tum ad sacellum Larum, inde forum Romanum; forumque et Capitolium non a Romulo,
