Boba's Motivation (long)

There's been a lot of handwringing about not understanding Boba Fett's reasons for wanting to completely change his life.

To me, there's nothing odd or unusual about the show's choice to gradually reveal the backstory of how Boba got there via the flashbacks, but since the question seems very much in the air, here's my take based on what we've seen.

I am considering only the live action material, as I have very limited experience with animated and zero experience with any other SW media.

Episode one opens with Boba sleeping in the bacta tank dreaming of when he was a boy, finding Jango's fallen helmet. This is a very purposeful choice, as it's calling back to the fact Boba is an orphan.

Boba's escape from the sarlaac pit is a pretty clear metaphor for rebirth. He's weak and helpless as a newborn and again an orphan because there's no one to care for him. Most likely, he would have died in the desert if the Tuskens hadn't found him and taken him.

At first, Boba's a slave, no question, and at first he responds exactly as you'd expect a prisoner to: he tries to escape. Not only does this fail though, Boba's limited attempt to reach out to his fellow prisoner completely fails as well and he's back to square one, tied to a post in a harsh environment and no options.

When the Tusken child takes Boba and the Rodian out for a black melon hunting picnic, it sets the stage for a major turning point. When the Harryhausen homage attacks, the young Tusken chooses to try to fight it rather than flee and Boba has a little window of opportunity to escape, but instead he chooses to kill the creature and saves the child.

Now, we need to understand this choice two ways. First, even if Boba was a serve-serving bastard, it was useless from him to run. The creature would kill the kid and in about one minute, go after Boba and that'd be the end of it. I feel it was a combination of both enlightened self interest and some empathy for the child that informs Boba's decision. At this point, we've been reminded that Boba remembers very keenly what it's like to be a kid who is suddenly facing danger with no one to turn to. He chooses to be the adult and protect the child, regardless of who the child is and the child's tribe has treated him.

When Boba and the child return to the Tusken camp triumphant, it's the real beginning of Boba's rebirth. Slaying the creature and saving one of the tribe's children has earned him important cred and we need to acknowledge that while

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

A Profound Discovery - an unsettling standalone short story

"What the hell were you thinking, Zanra?"

"I don't know, Damir. Maybe I was thinking that we're on a mission of discovery and personal injury is an acceptable risk."

"Of course, If it gains us knowledge." Damir stomped toward her as he spoke, each of his four foot pads emphasizing one syllable. Yet when it came time to touch Zanra's wound, his fingers became like feathers. She recoiled even from this and sent him storming around the medical bay, eventually tossing a tray of sterile instruments to the floor.

"Enough!," said a third voice.

Damir stopped his tantrum long enough to address the newcomer. "Stay out of this, Petra."

Petra picked up a fallen scalpel and examined its blade. "If only the blade of reason, could cut through this prideful lesion."

"We're not in the mood for poetry," said Damir.

Petra handed the scalpel to Zanra. "If he tries to touch you again."

"You should see how we touch when you're not looking," said Damir softly.

"What was that, little man?," said Petra.

"I said that I was trying to comfort Zanra. You'd know that if you ever bothered to ask."

Petra dismissed him with a click of her eye stalks but nodded for Zanra to explain.

Zanra hoisted herself onto the examination table and lifted her right rear leg. There, on the abdominal part of her jumpsuit, was a large blood stain.

"My god," said Petra.

"I told you!," said Damir.

Thanks to the sexual dimorphism of their species, Petra was twice Damir's weight and a meter taller. "Crawl back to your quarters," she said while towering over him.

Damir locked eyes with her, but his 150 centimeter height and 80 kilograms had no effect. After a few embarrassing seconds, he conceded to his diminutive status and left the medical bay.

In the male's absence Petra more closely examined Zanra. Off came the stained jumpsuit to expose the naked wound. "It's deep," said Petra. "I'm surprised that you aren't in terrible pain."

"The whole area feels numb, like when you get a local anesthetic."

"Cuts don't normally come with painkillers. What caused it?"

"I was in a chamber just off the main corridor connecting the eastern and western halls. In the middle of the chamber, surrounded by stone tables, was a black obelisk with six arms hanging radially and a crystalline orb on top. The orb was covered in symbols that reminded me of buttons. Thinking it was a control panel, I reached up and pressed a symbol. One of the arms sprang to life andβ€”"

The more I think on it, the more I'm not super impressed with the Flamekeeper and worried about what the potential new battletome will change

From the reveal of the new Auric Flamekeeper the other day, I was fairly excited to see it, especially since it's kind of a nice hype-builder for me as I now want to start getting back into Fyreslayers. But the more I've look at it over and over again, the less impressed I am with it.

First, while it is thematic for this hero to be all about burial rites and gameplay wise using dead models to fuel his abilities, it still feels odd that you need at least 5 models to die around him in order to actually have any benefit of using his ability. 10 wounds lost to have a single unit at the start of combat perform 1 of 4 actions, some being better than others in most cases.

  • A 6+ ward save which may be good on stuff like Vulkites and Auric Hearthguard, but very redundant on Hearthguard Berzerkers
  • A fight after model death before they've attacked, which is similar to what Vulkites have (though it's only once per game), making that redundant for them but for HG Berzerkers would be a treat
  • An immediate charge attempt, which from the article says can help get past Unleash Hell (something that really sounds nice), but you could also use it to maybe attempt another charge into anything if you failed the first time(?)
  • Last is a +1 to damage for all melee weapons a unit has which is probably the clear winner out of all the rest

Sadly, these only last for that combat phase they're activated and then you have to wait for another 5 models to die in order to do it again. Maybe if you have multiple Flamekeepers, you can quickly stack both and that could work but that may be FAQ'd early on. I would honestly rather have the ability to pick these normally and at max stacks with the Flamekeeper grant an empowered version, like 5+ ward now.

But ultimately, what then got me thinking was that our units may be getting bigger changes now. Think about it: with what we've seen with so far with the tomes out so far there are some pretty significant changes. Vulkites may lose their fight on death (though from my understanding, not many people were regularly running them), HGB may actually lose their 4+ ward save, we don't exactly know what to expect from this. 3E is basically changing a lot of what previous armies were doing and we may see some very dramatic changes to how Fyreslayers will run.

The Card-Shark Den – Play your way to the boss and retake the treasure from a gang of gamblers!

Surprise your players by beating them to the treasure! Upon reaching the deepest chambers of the dungeon, they find that no spirits, specters, or skeletons guard it. Rather, the Card Sharks, an underground gambling gang, hold the treasure they seek… and all the cards.

This encounter creates an open ended challenge with multiple solutions for any number of low-level characters. In order to retrieve the treasure they seek, the PCs will have to win or steal it from Duke, ringleader of this underground gambling ring. And in order to get to Duke, they’ll have to fight, sneak, or play their way to his table. When I run this encounter, I like to set the PC’s treasure as a large, golden sarcophagus that serves as Duke’s table itself! This encounter is designed for you to drop it into any dungeon or town. If you have dice games, NPCs, or a gambling ring of your own that you’d like to use, use them!

Google Doc

The Shark Den

A rumble of voices echo through the chamber, growing louder as you approach. Torchlight dances in the doorway. You enter into the final chamber, only to find rowdy crowds of characters gathered round tables, drinking and dancing between them, and leaning into the fray from balconies above. Cards, dice, chips, and coins cover the room like gold in a dragon’s hoard. They’re… gamblers. Across the room, you see the treasure you came to claim… in the hands of a hulking minotaur. They’re seated at the largest table in the house, raised on a dais at the end of the room.

Welcome to The Shark Den! Here you can play your way to victory or lose it all to the sharks! The only rule is that you pay to play, and there’s always something to put up. That, and what Duke says goes.

In order to play for the treasure at Duke’s table, the PCs will first have to earn some respect amongst the Card Sharks in three ways: skill, strength, and/or wealth. It’s up to you how many of these the room requires. If they move to approach Duke’s table, they’ll be stopped by a Card Shark and invited to play at one of the lower tables. There, they can demonstrate skill by winning a game. If they’re caught cheating, or simply accused of doing so after a win, their opponent will attack them and they’ll have the opportunity to demonstrate strength. Finally, once they win, they’ll claim their winnings and use them to enter a higher-stakes game, demonstrating wealth.

A Summary of Evidence Against Belief

As of 14 months ago, I no longer believe in the truth claims and worldview promoted by the LDS church. The following is a brief summary of the arguments in my research that I've found to be most convincing and influential in my loss of faith. I've split the arguments into four main sections that address (A) general religious belief, (B) general Christianity, (C) early Mormonism, and (D) modern Mormonism.

Please push back if any of these are weak, insufficient, poorly formed, or otherwise wanting arguments. I'm also happy to provide citations and/or research resources where applicable. These are all topics that I believe warrant further research for any individual analyzing their faith.

Happy reading!

A. Religious belief appears to be a natural byproduct of evolutionary processes.

  1. Religious belief unites groups via shared tenets and prohibits the group members from questioning those tenets. (Religious belief β€˜binds and blinds.’)
  2. Requiring group members to behave and think differently than surrounding populations (e.g., via dietary restrictions, work restrictions, speaking patterns, religious rites, etc.) strengthens the in-group mentality and places a barrier between the in-group and the out-group.
  3. Our brains are pre-wired for finding patterns, trusting the words of our elders, confirming our own biases and beliefs, ascribing natural events to the workings of an external agent, etc.
  4. We dislike having our core beliefs challenged, and we are pre-wired to engage in motivated reasoning and belief perseverance in protecting our emotional biases. Our brains reward us when we resolve the cognitive dissonance of having our beliefs challenged.
  5. Religious belief provides groups with pre-made moral frameworks, purpose in life, relief from existential dread, and supposed knowledge of how things β€˜really are.’
  6. Feelings of peace, expansion, inner warmth, and exhilaration are physiologic and have been reported in a wide variety of scenarios; e.g., in many religions, meditative practices, group activities (secular and religious), psychoactive substance usage, experiences with nature, etc. Religious activities often use practices that stimulate these physiologic responses; e.g., chanting, singing, public speaking, abstaining from food and/or water, meditating, reflecting on others’ suffering, contemplating nature, etc.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

The Prophecy of the Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean

The history of the tablets translated in the following pages is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years B.C.

The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis. For some 16,000 years, he ruled the ancient race of Egypt, from approximately 52,000 B.C. to 36,000 B.C. At that time, the ancient barbarous race among which he and his followers had settled had been raised to a high degree of civilization. Thoth was an immortal, that is, he had conquered death, passing only when he willed and even then not through death. His vast wisdom made him ruler over the various Atlantean colonies, including the ones in South and Central America.

When the time came for him to leave Egypt, he erected the Great Pyramid over the entrance to the Great Halls of Amenti, placed in it his records, and appointed guards for his secrets from among the highest of his people. In later times, the descendants of these guards became the pyramid priests, by which Thoth was deified as the God of Wisdom, The Recorder, by those in the age of darkness which followed his passing. In legend, the Halls of Amenti became the underworld, the Halls of the gods, where the soul passed after death for judgment. During later ages, the ego of Thoth passed into the bodies of men in the manner described in the tablets. As such, he incarnated three times, in his last being known as Hermes, the thrice-born. In this incarnation, he left the writings known to modern occultists as the Emerald Tablets, a later and far lesser exposition of the ancient mysteries.

The tablets translated in this work are ten which were left in the Great Pyramid in the custody of the pyramid priests. The ten are divided into thirteen parts for the sake of convenience. The last two are so great and far-reaching in their import that at present it is forbidden to release them to the world at large. However, in those contained herein are secrets which will prove of inestimable value to the serious student. They should be read, not once, but a hundred times for only thus can the true meaning be revealed. A casual reading will give glimpses of beauty, but more intensive study will open
