A Dutch woman crosses the border to stay in a hotel in Germany. When an anonymous caller asks for her, she panics and flees back to the Netherlands. Less than 24 hours later, her body is found over 100km from her hometown. What happened to Marja Nijholt on January 1st, 2013?

The New Year’s Murder and Bureau Dupin – a brief overview

On January 1st, 2013, a passerby walking his dog in the morning discovers a horrific sight: a dead body, right next to one of the houses on the Berghemseweg in the Dutch town of Oss. It quickly becomes apparent that she has become the victim of a crime. Nobody in the area seems to know who the dead woman is, and it takes a few days before she is identified as Marja Nijholt, a 48-year-old woman from the Dutch city of Enschede, who only arrived in Oss a day earlier. But why did she end up in Oss, over 100km (or a 2-hour train ride) away from her home? As the police investigates the timeline of this murder, they discover an intricate and curious case…

The murder of Marja Nijholt, also dubbed the β€œNew Year’s Murder”, puzzled law enforcement and civilians alike. After 18 months, the investigation was dialed way back in 2014, until a civilian initiative formed in 2020 pooled their efforts to help the police solve the case. The civilian collective, called Bureau Dupin after Edgar Allan Poe’s detective character, has since been working together with law enforcement to find a breakthrough in the case. The Bureau, fronted by former cop and data science professor Peter de Kock, has since investigated thousands of phone calls, text messages and has produced a 6-part podcast discussing the mysterious murder of Marja Nijholt. Their work, most notably said podcast, has been a huge help in creating this write-up.

There already was a write-up on this case a few years ago, but seeing all the work Bureau Dupin has done, as well as the fact this is a fascinating case, I think another discussion about it is very much in place.

Knowing Marja Nijholt

Note: taken nearly in full from Bureau Dupin podcast

Marja grew up with a brother and a sister, but at a young age her parents divorced. The role of her biological mother Kristel was filled by her new stepmom, Gemma. Soon, another sister was born. Kristel describes young Marja as β€œvery calm, sweet child. She needed a lot of love.” Kristel eventually came out as lesbian, however this only caused a rift between her and her former husband, causing her to have less contact with Marja and her siblings. Marja’s sister Ellen: β€œMy father made sure [Kristel] would not see her children anymore. Soon enough, he found love in my new mother, but Marja saw her as an intruder of sorts”.

Stepmother Gemma talks about the first time she met little Marja: β€œThe first t

First Contact - Chapter 651 - The Spoked Offensive

[first] [prev] [next]

"It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and still keep moving forward." - Unknown Terran Gladiator, Pre-Glassing

"One step at a time, one punch at a time, one blade at a time, one bullet at a time, one enemy at a time, one battle at a time, one war at a time. One life." - Engraved on the wall of the P'Thok Advanced Warfare School, Fort Erwin, Hamburger Kingdom.

Captain Cyba'armo'o stood with his men, all of them looking like normal Lanaktallans, wearing only standard shipboard armor, carrying light magac weapons with standard frangible ball rounds. They watched the battered dropship sitting in the middle of the deck with expressionless eyes.

Despite their appearance, Cyba'armo'o and his men were much different than the average Lanaktallan trooper.

They were 90% Terran Confederacy cybernetics. Full conversion cyborgs.

More Lanaktallan than Lanaktallan.

He scanned the dropship again, thinking to his briefing.

The dropship was listed as "lost in action" five years ago on a far away planet that had been assaulted by what was later determined to be Atrekna autonomous war machines. It was battered, had nose art from the XIIth Rifle Guards Orbital Assault Force, and most of its munitions were expended.

The passengers had to rely on the Indomitable Will of the Herd's tractor beams and two aerospace recovery ships to bring it in. According to communications it carried three passengers, a Tukna'rn, a Puntimat, and, unbelievably, a Terran who claimed to have been from San Angelos, Hamburger Kingdom.

Cyba'armo'o waited, watching closely. He could see the tattered remains of Atrekna phasic energy swirl on the dropship's warsteel armor, thanks to the phasic coprocessor systems he had built in to effectively fight the Atrekna.

The ship's side door cracked and slid open.

Alarm went off, flashing and whirling red lights. Cyba'armo'o felt his phasic/psychic shielding lock down around his head, down his spine, shooting down his flankspine to protect his biological parts.

The Puntimat was rippling with phasic energy, radiating out from the middle of her chest, flowing down her arms, and her hands with bright yellow levels of energy.

Pound for pound, Terran Descent Humanity is one of the most effective combatants in the known universe. With that in mind, imagine what humanity was forced to develop in order to kill one another.

Whatever you imagined, it is undoubtedly a pale shadow of reality. It would need to have greater endurance, greater strength, be more resistant to damage, able to repair as easily as a human heals, be able to work cohesively, be capable of critical thinking, non-linear thought, and predictive analysis. On top of that, it would have to be able to utilize advanced technology in order to combat the premier tool using omnivorous persistence hunter in the galaxy.

With that in mind, let us study the "First Artificial War" which is also known by the name "The Android Wars." - Introduction to Intermediate Human Warfare Studies 340.

Speaks looked up and scrambled into the armored sedan, ignoring that high-vee rounds hit the door with loud thunk thunk thunk sounds, that the window suddenly gained four palm-sized spiderwebs, and collapsed on the seat.

Ru'udamo'o threw the vehicle in reverse, slamming the accelerator and whipping the wheel.

"Are you hurt? Are you injured?" Ru'udamo'o asked as Speaks shifted and reloaded his rifle.

"Gonna need a hospital," Speaks said. "Took three to the armor, one penetration, got my foot blown off and one of my antenna is ripped in half," he said. He checked the side of the rifle to make sure all the telltales were green, saw the amber one, slapped the bottom of the magazine, then grunted when the telltale went green.

"What is occurring?" Ru'udamo'o asked, veering around a slow moving truck and speeding up as the sedan climbed the on-ramp onto the upper level access.

"Not sure," Speaks said, lifting up his head and looking behind the sedan. "I was checking something in GalNet, the next thing I knew, someone was sending hit teams after me."

"They do not seem concerned about exposure or collateral damage," Ru'udamo'o swerved around a slow moving sedan and merged with highway traffic. "They're assaulting the starport and planetary weather control."

Speaks nodded. "That fits. Whoever did this, they screwed up big time," h

Chapter 44 – The fate of the β€œlate” James Aldwin

Several weeks earlier

[As the timer behind him slowly ticked down, James held eye contact with the face on the screen before him, only breaking it to shortly glimpse down at the sheet in his hand containing official answers to the test questions he was providing to his companion behind the camera.

β€œHmmm…,” it sounded after a short silence. β€œWasn’t it by producing product abundance?”

Nia looked justifiably unsure of her answer while slightly smiling at him through the screen. James didn’t even need to look at the answer sheet to correct her on this one.

β€œWell, that is one of three ways. And the least effective at that.” he explained. β€œThe answer they are searching for, however, would have been Antisense-Expression.”

Nia moaned loudly and disappeared from the screen before him, presumably having wandered out of her camera’s field of view.

β€œHow am I supposed to remember what methods they used for every single damn organism?” she exclaimed, still out of view, and James could hear her footsteps stomping around her room.

James shook his head, grinning, and put the answer sheet aside for a moment, to give the hothead some time to cool down.

β€œAren’t you being a little dramatic?”, he asked while searching the monitor for a sign on which side of her room she currently was. Then he continued, β€œAfter all, there are only, like, eight of them. And they are all pre-determined. It’s not like you actually have to learn anything, you just have to memorize it.”

Nia’s head suddenly popped back into view from the left side of the screen and she gave James an angered look. Her dark eyes fixated him through her long eyelashes. Her flat nose was slightly wrinkled and scrunched from her narrowing her eyes so much and she had to remove some braids, that had by now loosened from the tight knot she had tied her dark hair into, out of her face.

Then the rest of her body slowly came back into frame, as she sat back down in front of her camera and put her head in her hands while sighing audibly.

*β€œYou’re saying that like it’s supposed to be easy,” she mumbled without looking back up at him. Jame
