MOVING AN OBELISK: The emperor Caligula brought a great stone obelisk from Egypt to the Circus Nero in Rome. It was a 327-ton monolith, 83 feet long. In 1586,Pope Sixtus V ordered the obelisk moved to the Piazza where St. Peter's Basilica was going up.
Shouldn't the catholic church, one of the richest organizations in the world, foot the bill to repair the basilica?

A group of architects, engineers and conservators examined the basilica’s structural soundness by rapelling down the exterior and using drones to photograph the building, then issued a report in 2020. They found a number of deficiencies, including that the building’s rainwater collection and dispersal system is too small for the structure and contributes to insidious water damage.

Why is the Basilica asking for donations? Shouldn't the Vatican be paying for the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of one of it's landmark churches?

While In Italy about a week ago, I took half a tab the day I went to the Vatican, and St. Peter’s Basilica was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend 11/10.
