I barely remember this instrument from a world music store I was in a long time ago. I canβt remember exactly what it looked like, maybe it was large upright wooden blocks hit with these mallet/paddle things? I might be wrong.
I do remember the sound, it was a very round, woody bass tone, slightly nasally in the attack. I would write it as βBeewwmmmmmβ. It did not have any kind of loose, rattly, or creaky sound that I usually associate with African instruments.
Iβve been trying to figure out what it was. Itβs definitely not an mbira, a tongue drum, or a xylophone. It maybe might have been some weird balafon but it was all bass notes. It might not even have been African, in fact it may have just been some custom instrument.
Anyone know what it might have been?
