A list of puns related to "Ashkenaz"
Hi!
We just launched a new podcast about the bible, contrasting the Ancient Hebrew text and the King James translation, but we're not biblical scholars, so we wanted to check some stuff out with you guys. In Genesis 10, detailing Noah's lineage from his sons: is there any research about the etymology of the names listed above and others, such as Arphaxad, Gether and more? Thanks!
Was thinking of going tonight but havenβt been before. Has anyone been before? Is this a cool scene?
How to Orthodox Ashkenazim who live in Israel pronounce Hebrew words? Is there a difference between their pronunciation in davening and in every day speech (to the extent that they do use Hebrew for at least some everyday interactions)?
I can imagine any one of a number of answers: (1) everything in "modern Israeli" pronunciation; (2) everything in Ashkenaz; (3) daily conversation in modern Israeli pronunciation, davening in Ashkenaz pronunciation; or (4) davening Ashkenaz, everyday in a sort of code-switching where something might show up as, for example, "simchas torah" (or even "simkhis toyreh") in an otherwise modern Israeli sentence.
Obviously, every individual is different, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this that could help answer.
I daven at 3 different shuls on a regular basis, one used nusach ashkenaz one sefard and one Ari. I've become tri-lingual, but am very interested in learning about how the differences involved, the meaning behind the differences...
I'm having a hard time finding any book about this. Does anyone know of anything? Ideally something that follows the flow of a siddur and compares each difference as it comes. But I'm open to any suggestions.

P.S.
Who gets the folk song reference?
Shabbos, everyone.
I was at Aish Hatorah a few years ago and began learning (biblical) Hebrew with Ashkenaz Pronunciation from a great book. Since I moved back home and gone back to school, I haven't kept up. Thus, I've forgotten the name of the book I used to learn from.
Does anyone have any suggestions for books to buy that adequately teach biblical Hebrew with Ashkenaz pronunciation?
Here's an etymology question for all you /r/hebrew folks.
Modern Hebrew uses medieval Hebrew place-names for modern countries in a few different circumstances:
The Biblical ΧΦ΄Χ¦Φ°Χ¨Φ·ΧΦ΄Χ is also used to refer to modern Egypt.
My question is, why then is ΧΧ©ΧΧ Χ not used for Germany? Instead, modern Hebrew uses ΧΦΆΧ¨ΧΦΈΧ Φ΄ΧΦΈΧ.
I understand that medieval ΧΧ©ΧΧ Χ did not exactly correspond to modern-day Germany, but I think the same is also true for France and Spain -- yet we still use their medieval names in modern Hebrew.
Any ideas?
Have any of you seen Stue Allen and the Mars Hotel at the Ashkenaz? If so I'm wondering what your experience was like and what the atmosphere is?
Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of Tefillat Kol Peh (Ashkenaz) in the UK? I see it a lot on my travels (this weekend, Bournemouth, UK!) and would like to have one of my own. Thanks in advance.

Ashkenaz is hosting another Grateful Dead open mic tomorrow night. The house band is solid and you can sit in and sing or play a Dead/Jerry Garcia Band tune with them. There is also a great sounding Meyer Sound system. This is a great community and we really need to build up the turnout and keep it growing. If you don't play come on out and support great local music, the house band usually plays a set to end the night. Ashkenaz.com for details.
