A list of puns related to "Anoxic Event"
Hi, I'm just now learning about OAE's and was hoping to ask for some questions about them which I wasn't too clear on and couldn't find an answer for online. Answers to any of the questions would be greatly appreciated.
I) Is there a threshold or certain values for the classification of an OAE?
II) Do OAE's have impacts- regionally and globally (they're associated with global warming and extinction events but I wasn't sure if this was causation or correlation?)
III) what are the benefits of studying them?
I submitted this question to r/askscience and they were either stumped or didn't care. Now I am trying some other subreddits to see if anyone has opinions. I tried r/marinebiology first because this type of extinction event is probably most relevant to people in that field. But also I wanted to cast a wider net this time and I think the people of r/geology would probably be the most familiar with the Permian Extinction and so might have a very educated opinion on the risks posed by another such event. Here is the original question I posted to r/askscience to comply with that subreddits much stricter posting guidelines:
With the increasing threats to our oceans such as global warming/climate change, anoxia, algal blooms, receding populations of major marine fauna (most recently krill), rising sea temperatures, and many types of severe pollution, many popular scientific authors, most notably Elizabeth Kolbert in her Pulitzer Prize winning book "The Sixth Extinction" have postulated that we may be approaching another anoxic event like what happened during the Permian Extinction and several other historic extinction events.
To summarize my question again: Is there actually a possibility of another global ocean anoxic event and if so what is the potential timeframe we might be looking at for this type of extinction event to occur?
Also, sorry if reposting the question bothers anyone. I am just desperate for answers on this one. It feels like the whole world is on the brink of calamity and no one really appreciates the gravity of the situation. But perhaps I am overestimating how destructive a Global Anoxic Event would really be.
Less of a 'what if' and more of a 'when'. Earth's oceans become too hot to sustain oxygen-generating microorganisms. Fishing industry collapse is obvious, with millions, if not billions left starving.
Help develop this scenario. How is the issue addressed? Is it addressed? Does human civilization implode? What's left standing?
(Note: I'm not talking to you an-prims, you've got everything figured out it seems)
I was reading about a potential internet collapse in the coming years that could last weeks, months, years or decades, back in the the 19th and 20th century, anarchists and socialists didn't have internet, they organized in ways that are not very familiar to me.
Nowadays anarchism is widespread on the internet (and as graffiti), if the internet collapsed then what would happen with anarchism?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.

So What did 3 say to 8 ?
" Hey, you two stop making out "
I won't be doing that today!
I just thought I'd share this as almost everyone I talk to about climate change seems to be repeating just bits and pieces of things they've heard. I don't pretend to be a scientist or science communicator, but I have tried to keep myself apprised of current information related to the topic and these are my favourite theories on how it is going to go. I think the topic deserves our full and unbiased attention despite some difficulties in holistically looking at such a complicated topic where the consensus has become somewhat muddied.
Our planet is an extremely complicated system inextricably linked with our sun. I do not believe that the current mainstream modelling for climate change (either GCM or EMIC) take into account all energy (solar forcing) imparted by our sun. Current mainstream models are flawed in that they rely only on total solar irradiance or thermal coupling and ablation. However our planet also regularly receives energy in the form of high and low energy electromagnetic particles, and the earth is also continuously coupled with the interplanetary magnetic field through the global electric circuit. And then there is also a constant bombardment by EM waves (UV and x-rays) and as we have seen with Jupiter, the x-rays bounce around (or rather they interact with the ionosphere decaying into electrons and protons, and are captured by the van allen belts) with an energy transfer effect at the poles. Approximately every 12000 years our sun has had a brief additional output of energy transferred through all of these avenues, likely due to our solar system passing through a charged galactic current sheet which happens to be chock full of dust particles.
This encounter briefly warms our planet prior to a high energy solar outburst which has caused past Heinrich-Bond events and geomagnetic excursions. We've collected evidence of this cyclical past through various methods such as examining sediment/ice cores, radiometric dating, and dendroclimatogy. Unfortunately the popularized and widely reported upon models (by mostly non-science communicators and politicians) do not take into account external forcing and have placed an undue emphasis on CO2 emissions and by extension grant money for research is awarded with extreme confirmation bias towards a 100% anthropogenic conclusion, thus funding both corporate greenwashing and carbon capture private business initiatives. While we do need to protect our planet's biodiversity and the atmosphere from further

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.
Daughter: I'm hungry
Me: nerves building, smile widening
Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.
She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.
Thank you all for listening.
There hasn't been a post all year!
