Novel NMDA Antagonists

As much as we all adore the Arylcyclohexamines, with the recent slew of blanket bans and legal restrictions specifically targeting analogs of PCP or Ketamine I fear for the future of this class in many jurisdictions. Therefore, I'm curious what chemical classes might replace them in a post-ACH landscape.

The Diarylethylamines saw a brief span of popularity, but have now largely been outlawed. I know some people claimed they were enjoyable, even if only as "brain damage simulators", though on the whole I'd say they failed to gain anywhere near the popularity or appreciation of their ACH cousins.

I know /u/Nervewing has frequently spoken of Dexoxadrol and its kin Etoxadrol as chemicals which might represent potential dissos of the future, and certainly these compound's human testing record does lend them a certain pedigree, however they are on the whole quite complex molecules and I somewhat doubt their viability as cost-effective replacements for the ACH scaffold with their likely difficult synthesis processes.

Having looked through Wikipedia's list of Ionotropic glutamate receptor modulators I stumbled upon a few alternative structures; some more interesting than others.

8A-PDHQ is a notable compound, not only because its chemical structure resembles a dick-n'-balls, but indeed because it possesses an in vivo potency comparable to MK-801 (the true O.G. of high potency NMDAr antagonists). That being said, its structure is essentially an oddball ACH, not unlike a PCPr that connects back on itself, therefore it's likely it might fall under analog acts in many jurisdictions.

NEFA is a relatively simple disso, with a vague resemblance to an ACH, though with enough difference to make for a convincing legal differentiation. Aside from its existence and a single journal article implying its relevance as an NMDAr antagonist I was able to find little info on this one.

Indantadol is a weird one, resembling the non-toxic empathogen 2-AI. Supposedly it's a low affinity NMDAr antagonist as well as a MAOI, which likely curtails any potential use as a functional disso.

How to implement races/species correctly and avoid tropes?

Hi everyone,

I started writing a rough framework for my story (in my native language, so sorry in advance for English gramma and spelling mistakes), but now I am not sure if adding races actually improves my story or makes it less serious?

First things first, I tried to avoid (most) of the "Tolkien" races, or I slightly alternated them.

I sadly started with way too many races, which not only got convoluted but also a little bit unnecessary for the overall plot, so I tried to cut some or morphed some together.

The general idea is that during the early stages of the formation of earth/the universe the planet was hit by a certain number (still to be determined) of meteoroids, which each carried different unicellular organisms, and triggered a diverse development of sapient life forms (more or less) based on our current earth. During the separation of the continents most life forms developed independent from each other. Also, since I used our world as a template (except for the terraforming) most races are humanoid.

So, I have: (for simplicity purposes I keep the description easy, and I skip the names I created)

  • Lizards in various sizes (I guess they are comparable to dragons or monsters from monster hunter), with a huge magical affinity. They come in three forms:
  1. Sapient (like intelligent and mighty dragons, and now almost extinct)

  2. medium intelligent (the intelligence is comparable to chimps)

  3. Animals.

  • Lizard folk: Bio-magical engineered crossbreeds of (the sapient) dragons and humans, mainly used as slaves in old times. There is nothing special about them, they are also neither strong nor do they have any strong affinity to magic. Therefor they were mainly used as disposable workforces (canon fodder, food, farming, workers and so on). Appearance: Lizard humanoids.

  • Amphibious/sea folk: second attempt of the dragons to create powerful and more intelligent life. A little bit more successful. They were mainly used as warriors. Amphibious/fish humanoids.

  • Dragon kin: Their last attempt: Basically bio-magical engineered crossbreed of dragons and an ancient human sub species. These were successful, and mainly used as special forces and representative/lawmakers. Humanoid with varying degrees of draconic features.

  • beast folk (dog or cat like): highly separated. They tend to form smaller groups and juntas (tendency for warlords). The continent they are from is highly split in a dozen different (instable) countries. Fas

Tsaesci Religiosity and the Shae

There are no gods in Akavir. There are, of course, demon-spirits that were fathered by the shattered remains of the creation-spirits – after they unwillingly sustained Creation – but there are no true gods (in spite of what those knife-eared horrors would have you believe).

Despite occupying a godless World of beasts, the Tsaesci are remarkably pious; with sprawling temple-districts in most cities and a complex presbyterium overseeing much of public life, the Tsaesci are a deeply spiritual people. But instead of worshipping the creators or their princely offspring (if they had remained in any capacity), the Tsaesci devote themselves to a form of ancestor reverence.

They principally revere the Progenitors that invaded the fledgling World with their Fire-Egg in ancient times – whom emerged from the Great Crater afterwards and first established Tsaescence with [REDACTED] and are thanked therefore – but they similarly venerate all their relevant predecessors. Deceased kin are not understood as deities, but as incorporeal advisers: Wise men and women with lifetimes of knowledge and experience, with whom the living stay in contact by ritualized means in shrines and temples.

There are those that are born with an innate ability to commune with the predecessors, whom are often taken in by the temple-priests as wards. They can become the Shae: High-Priests near the top of the temple-hierarchy that perpetually commune with a spirit-council of their most remarkable ancestors.

The most famous, or infamous, of the Shae was Versidue-Shae, ward of the High-Pontiff of the Capital and Prime Wyrm-Slayer of the Dragonguard. He was said to count Xhaneras-Dehrak the Gourmandizer – an Exalted Crimson Drake-Eater whom was slain in the early days of the War with Po'Tun – among his Shae, perhaps explaining his affinity with hunting dragons. Versidue-Shae dishonorably left Akavir for Tamriel in defiance of the Emporer and the High-Pontiff after the emergence of Tosh-Raka, making great use of his Shae as a soldier and state maker.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Caden stood at the edge of the Coral Sea, what had once been a sloping shore giving way to a vast expanse of desert that resembled a canyon. It extended as far as the eye could see. The far side must be over the horizon, whatever it looked like. He unfurled his map and checked it, making sure that he was indeed where he was supposed to be.

From this vantage point, he could make out the spires that the Dweorh had described. They looked like chimneys of stone, their surfaces covered in what resembled colorful moss, but was actually discoloration in the minerals. They were uneven, bulbous, no two of them exactly alike. They sprouted from the ground in clusters, many of them seeming to emerge from the same formation of rock. They were far higher than he had imagined, some of them looked to be skirting a hundred feet. Many had collapsed under their own weight, but there were plenty still standing tall.

Surrounding them was the coral that gave this place its name. It was so abundant that the Coral Sea could scarcely be referred to as a desert, the ancient growths creating massive shelves where they had built atop one another over eons, like a petrified botanical garden. They took on such varied shapes. Some bore a close resemblance to fungi, like giant mushrooms that sprouted from the rock, while others were more plant-like in their appearance. There were even corals that had taken on an uncanny resemblance to trees, rising from the ground on stout trunks, branch-like formations creating a sort of table that cast shadows on the land beneath then. Unfortunately, the vibrant colors that they must have sported in life were long gone, time having made them as lifeless as the stone that surrounded them.

Between the clusters of spires and outcrops of coral, paths formed in what had once been the seabed, filled in with sand that bore a striking rust-red color. Caden began to descend the sandy incline, dropping down into the maze of spires and reefs. It would be easy to get turned around in here, and although he might have an infinite supply of water, the same was not true of his food. He would have to make sure his path remained straight.

His heart began to race a

Theory of Hereditary Level Caps

This is just a theory of mine, but could it be possible for the level caps of New Worlders to be determined by the caps of their parents? The idea came from the current understanding of God-Kin as beings that inherit a portion of their Player ancestor's power, and to a lesser degree, Keno in the side story. For convenience, I will assume that Keno and Evileye have the same level cap, both before and after becoming vampires.

I also think it plausible that changing from a humanoid race to a demi-human or heteromorph race either adds the first racial level obtained to a person's original level cap, or enough to max the first class they take. This would allow people to change races even if they have already reached their cap.

In Keno's case, both of her parents probably had above average level caps: her father could cast 4th-tier magic (at least level 21), and her mother 5th-tier (at least level 28). Additionally Satoru mentioned that Keno would be best suited to train as a melee fighter (a fencer, to be precise) despite the arcane affinity she retained from her origins as a rainbow eye, implying that vampiric racial classes do not provide intrinsic spellcasting abilities in the way that Overlord and its prerequisite classes do. This would explain Evileye's inability to cast 6th-, 7th-, and even a little 8th-tier magic, despite being level 50 and knowing about the existence of the 10th tier. I thus postulate that Evileye and Keno were born with a high enough level cap to become proficient in 5th-tier magic (28-35), and that Evileye's remaining levels are in vampiric classes that offer no magical prowess, thereby preventing her from learning higher-tiered magic. Applied to Keno, this scenario would likely place her somewhere within the level caps of her parents, with her father's cap as her minimum and her mother's her maximum.

If Evileye and Keno are sufficient evidence of hereditary level caps, then God-Kin are the logical extrema. The first generation offspring between an Yggdrasil player capped at level 100 and a New World human capped around level 20 would have an average level cap of 60, far beyond even the realm of human heroes. But if a person's level cap were exactly the average of their parents', successive generations of God-Kin siring children with New World humans would cause them to inherit level caps closer and closer to those of their New World parents. The Theocracy could have slowed this decline if they deliberately had their God

Ranking EVERY Opeth song

As the title says, I have taken some time to rank EVERY Opeth song in order of how much I like them. I'm only counting officially released songs that have a studio version (no "Into the Frost of Winter"/"Eternal Soul Torture" as they have been re-used/are only demo rehearsal recordings) and only original versions (no "Mellotron Heart) and songs (no covers). I will be counting bonus tracks, instrumentals and intros for the sake of comprehensiveness. The earliest song I am considering for my list is "In Mist She was Standing" and the latest is "Cirkelns Rikting" as it was released, if limited. Obviously I cannot rank the other two ICV bonus tracks, yet.

Please note: This is MY OWN opinion list that I did for fun and took some time to make, so please don't crucify me if I didn't rank a song as high as you might have. If you're interested why I ranked a certain song so high/low I'd gladly elaborate.

All 113 (considered) Opeth songs ranked in my personal opinion:
