A list of puns related to "Toxicodendron"
Would sunchoke be a possible competitor for poison ivy? They seem to prefer similar niches, sunny edge areas. The ecological role of undergrowth suppression and soil o.m. deposition seem similar.
The common permaculture suggestion of crown herbicide application followed by sheet mulching and planting with forest seems like it could be improved for large areas by the use of an alternative for resource and labor heavy sheet mulching. Any other suggestions?
Their scientific names led me to the conclusion, that they don't have anything in common. The etymology of the word itself didn't provide any information. Please help!!! It drives me crazy
I live in Northern Virginia, originally from West Virginia. All my life I have heard poison oak, sumac, and ivy discussed as a group to avoid (understandably).
But all throughout my travels as an intern and landscaper, I have only come across poison ivy; despite anecdotes about people "only being allergic to poison oak," or what have you.
Does poison oak even grow on this side of the Rockies? I checked USDA and it is firmly distributed on the Pacific coast, as it should be. What plant do they think is poison oak?
TL;dr: Does poison oak exist on the East coast or am I oblivious?
Do your worst!
It really does, I swear!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
