Torre Puns

It looks like we have a new voice for Ikora, and I thought we should show some appreciation for Gina Torres and her work as Ikora.

TW: this story mentions death. Nothing gory, but this is a dangerous hobby.

I have two major hobbies nowadays, chess and rock climbing. Since the one hobby has been featured here so much, I figured I’d share one of my favorite sagas from the other.

What is alpinism?

Alpinism (or mountaineering) is pretty straightforward: it’s the sport of climbing mountains. This sort of thing has long captivated human attention, and most folks are at least somewhat familiar with it. Mt Everest regularly makes headlines, mainly for traffic jams and occasionally for notable new ascents.

In mountaineering, however, the biggest mountain isn’t really the most important. While Everest is absolutely an accomplishment (and the counter jerk against it goes too far, but that’s another story), it’s more a question of stamina and high altitude fitness than actual technical difficulty. For a large mountain it’s actually rather attainable, which is part of why it has become so crowded.

For serious mountaineers Everest is worth doing, but it isn’t likely to be at the top of your bucket list. Great alpinists look to find unique paths (called routes) up technically challenging mountains. Sometimes, as with Everest or K2, part of the challenge comes from the thin air you find above 8,000 meters. Other times it’s down to the raw difficulty of the rock and ice that stands between you and the summit.

For many alpinists there are few peaks more iconic than Cerro Torre.

Meet Cerro Torre

Cerro Torre is a 3,128 meter (10,262 ft) mountain in Patagonia. There are two major ranges in Patagonia, the Fitz Roy range (which you may know from the Patagonia clothing company’s logo) and the Torre Range. The Fitz Roy range, with Mount Fitz Roy standing properly in the center, is gorgeous. It dominates the landscape. Fitz Roy itself was first climbed by French alpinists in 1952.

It’s said that when they reached the summit they looked out over the landscape, saw Cerro Torre and said “Now there’s a mountain worth risking one’s skin for!”

After their ascent they said Cerro Torre was impossible. For a serious alpinist, that’s a challenge worth taking on.

Enter Cesare Maestri

Cesare Maestri was an accomplished Italian climber, known as “the Monkey of the Dolomites” after the climbing region he called home. Maestri was known as an in

Look, I'm a Gleyber fan, and I'm rooting for him. But something is clearly wrong with Gleyber, and running him out there every day is obviously not working to get him to come back around. According to Fangraphs, he has 2 options. Would it be that bad of a thing to send him down to AAA for a few weeks and get some fresh (coaching) eyes on him, and let him do some work on lower-level pitching? Why is this not being discussed as even a possibility? I'm not questioning his talent. It's obviously there. We've seen it. But something needs to change.

I think the Gleyber Torres slander on this sub is actually kinda ridiculous. The amount of people that all of the sudden hate and have given up on this kid is kinda absurd tbh. A lot of you seem to forget in 2018 when this team was struggling and he got called up and the Yankees got an immediate spark and went on a really nice run. Lets not forget his great 2019 season, and the massive hits he got in the playoffs and seemed to be really the only offensive threat in the 2019 playoffs. Even last season in 2020, which a lot of people seem to care way to much about even though a ton of players had bad seasons…Sure he got off to a slow start got hurt and didn’t have a great regular season, but he once again showed up in the playoffs when no one was hitting expect Stanton.

Now is he our future SS? Probably not. Would I trade him for a better SS sure, if the return was right. But he’s been about average all season at SS aside from a couple blunders early on. Ideally he should be at 2B. And he has a huge offensive ceiling.

Bottom line is the kid has to figure out his swing, he’s still young and it’s a bit odd to give up on him already.
