The Social Dilemma - A Netflix Original documentary

I consider myself very lucky to witness the ghost beforehand that is killing the society by leading them towards polarizing. The irony here is I am posting this on one of such platform. But again I am pretty sure I am not spreading false information. Job well done Team.

Social Dilemmas: Optimize the location of people in a room

While in a room of people, I thought of a problem involving a room of people. Unfortunately, I haven't got a clue how to even begin solving it. I was curious to see if anyone could figure out a way to do so.

Suppose we have a rectangular 2d room, with a finite width and height of x and y. In this room, we must place n people. For each person, we must find a position in the room as well as a direction they're facing.

The people have desire functions, and the goal is to try to optimize the positioning in the room so that the total desire sum is maximized. People are modeled as circles with radius 1. We'll define the 'face' of a person as a single point on the perimeter. All circles must lie entirely within the room.

For every person, their total desire of a position + direction is based on the sum of their desire functions towards every other individual. And these desire functions depend on how well they can see other people.

A person can see someone else if there is a line between that person's face and the other person's circle that doesn't intersect with any other circles. To be able to see someone, they must also be within a distance d (measured from face to the closest visible point).

The desire function for every individual to every one else is: if you can see them, then your desire is d-r, where r is the distance from their face towards the closest visible point on the others circle. If you can't see them your desire is 0

As an example, here's a simple drawing of an unoptimized room. https://puu.sh/AvaMd/d11bcc3e50.png The circles represent the people, the yellow dots their faces, and the red lines the available lines of sight.

Now how do I maximize the desires of the people in a room given some arbitrary x,y,n and r? If this generic case is too hard, you can replace all or some of these by constants. I recommend x=15, y=15, n=10,r=10

The Prisoner's Dilemma only exists because humans found the solution to the similar "game" of anti-social behaviour.

I.e. before the prisoners dilemma was named as such it was already solved.

To make an individual act in the interest of the group when they otherwise wouldn't, one solution is to punish them (e.g. prison for robbery).

And I mean the name, the concept didn't require it.

A dilemma of quitting social media

Hi!

Recently I (23M) have been questioning why I spend so much time on Facebook. Typing an "f" in the url autofills in facebook, and typing f has become as autonomous as breathing when I open chrome. Today I deleted my twitter, which I never actually used, and my Instagram which had some pictures in it (I saved them all before deleting as they are more memory related than bragging related). The reason why I have chosen to start deleting social media is mostly because of the time wasted, but also that my mind seem to rot after scrolling through feeds. I get angry seeing all the crap middle aged humans post or comment on, mostly on climate related news or cases which I closely follow.

So why have I not yet deleted Facebook, or even Snapchat for that matter? Snapchat is actually harder to pinpoint than Facebook. I connect with close friends on a group chat there, and it brings a lot of joy that I might be afraid of missing out on. Facebook on the other hand I have a clear answer to why I can't seem to delete it. On Facebook I administer at least two pages. One is not that important as it is my university-class group in which I'm the class representative. The second page I administer is an official page for a local history-group. I'm the leader of this group and I'm responsible for publishing news and other history-related happenings in the region. This is an important media for our group as our 100 paying members mostly get their information from there.

What should I do? I really want to ease into a social media free life, but my personal obligations seem to stop me.

TL;DR: see last sentence.

Dilemma of social life, sleep and study.

Hey internet friends, I am studying ACCA in Nepal. As we all know how much time it need to prepare for exam if you want to pass. For almost a year, I dedicated my whole time for study. Then few month ago I started experiencing vicious feeling of Loneliness. I wasn't taking any classes, so I was on my own. I contacted my highschool friends, but we usually just partied. So either I had to sacrifice sleep to hangout with my friends more or I had to sacrifice my social life. With that huge dilemma I got an idea. I started contacting ACCA students in Kathmandu. We planned to study together. Group study isn't the most efficient way to study, but I can be with friends and study without damaging my social life or getting mentally ill. So, nowadays with some of my friends we study and also have some fun. I would recommend this to every ACCA students, if you feel lonely like I felt.

Social dilemma

How do you people manage to deal with your social life and depression at the same time? I just don't seem to be able to fucking manage. It feels mind boggling to me that some people can have a good job, relationship and a few good friends. I'm 22, I think I slowly lost all of my friends during the span of few years. I cant seem to keep them in my circle, I never had a girlfriend, and probably never will, and I can't even make new friends cause I can't let anyone close and I can't get out of my house I would love to have some human connections but you guys are all I have atm. Ty for that. Any advice?

No contact and no social media after break up. But a dilemma.

2 and a half weeks ago I (31m)) broke up with my SO (28f). I say SO, we were never official or exclusive, but I always acted like we were and she knew it. She declared feelings for me over a year ago and I’ve been patient/needy/putting her on a pedestal ever since. 5/6 months ago she ended a long term relationship and I was the main reason why. Her feelings for me were too strong and felt they couldn’t love each other the same again (apparently). Fast forward two months and we’re seeing each other. It was great.

2 months into it she’s dating other guys. Possibly due to encouragement from friends who are doing the same. I was very frustrated by this as she knew I had no interest in anyone else (and tbh was fairly obsessed!). I decided to have the ultimatum talk and as a result we had a β€œbreak up” in which I said I was unwilling to be just friends. She said she had very strong feelings but wasn’t ready for anything serious yet. I’ve been keeping my distance with no contact as I was needy and the one that wanted to take it to the next step. I said we cannot be friends as my feelings are too strong.

A day later she sent me a nothing message. I did not reply. I have not been on any social media or messaging apps since. Instead I’ve been improving myself and working on self awareness and confidence and I’m doing well.

My question to you all is that when I do go back to using messaging apps do I open the message from her (it’s currently unread, but I know what it is through notifications) or do I just ghost it? Either way she’ll see I’ve been online.

Or is blocking the easiest option? Thank you 😊

Social battery dilemma?

Hi, I am on the more extreme end of introversion, and I have a longtime friend coming over to spend the night tonight. My social battery will die about 3-5 hours in, and it's really embarrassing because my friends see that as rudeness. How can I extend my social battery? My mom flips a shit when she sees that battery die on me while I've got guests over and I really can't take that right now. Thanks!

The Ironwood Dilemma: How Perspective Matters.

The title far more dramatic than this post ever will be.

There were two choices he could have made. First is to stick to his original plan and continue evacuating Mantle then facing the second Grimm wave bravely. The second was to cut his losses and try to get as many assets as possible out of enemy hands while forsaking what doesn’t make it in time.

He chose the later. The protagonists chose the former. Here’s where the issue of perspective comes in.

RWBY till this point has never truly suffered a definitive loss ever since Beacon. As far as they are concerned the odds aren’t completely against them if they chose to fight back. They are feeling a degree of confidence. Enough confidence to think the risk is worth it.

Ironwood on the other hand lost to Salem at Beacon only to return to Atlas with everyone breathing down his neck for answers and no one providing any solutions. He dealt with this environment for at least a year. Now he finds out that his plan to unite people against Salem may be useless as they cannot kill her anyway.

The difference in optimism is the origin of the conflict not ideals. If Ironwood had been given this choice before V3 he would likely have been on RWBY’s side in this. But failure and disappointment has only thought him to moderate his hopes to avoid losing everything.

It’s without a doubt ultimately a gamble. One that RWBY feels confident taking and that Ironwood has learned to not even bother trying.

There are some saying that he is doing this all out of fear, cowardice or just plain insanity but that’s wacky nonsense. While he is afraid he has proven himself several times to not be a coward and his mental state has never driven him to make irrational decisions.

Because wether you agree with the plan or not denying the rationale behind it would just be ridiculous.

Of course Meta knowledge allows us to know that RWBY truly will win this gamble one way or another. But I wonder how many would be willing to side with them if they didn’t know that RWBY ultimately cannot lose this fight. Especially if they were living on Atlas.

This is a minor defense of Ironwood that I hope people will understand. There was no right or wrong choice made in that room. Only the choice that each side decided was worth trying.

TL;DR Ironwood isn’t insane, cowardly or losing his emotions. He’s just been burned by the candle too much to agree to stick his hand in again.

Today I witnessed a dilemma play out on the tube

On my commute home today on the Piccadilly Line (at a particularly rickety patch) a 30 or so year old male who was stood up in an aisle fell down and sat on a 30 or so year old’s lap. Usually oh goodness very embarrassing etc. The female however had her laptop (seemingly personal) open on her lap as he fell. His butt and following body weight snapped the laptop in half and smashed it up real bad. They were both in shock (as were all of us who had witnessed). She said β€œyou’ve just broken my laptop”. He said β€œI’m so sorry”. We then simultaneously pulled into my stop so I got off and will never know the outcome. My question to you guys is, who is to blame here and should the male pay the female if he is to blame?

Edit: Just to point out he wasn’t holding on to anything. Also, apologies to all for not staying on and watching this play out, I accept all criticism that comes my way and agree I should probably contribute to the new laptop.

Everyone is talking about the suddenly droppable Mixon dilemma, but what is the strategy when you have a team full of these "Mixons?"

When aside from 1 or 2 solid starters, your whole team is made up of these players "Not good enough to start right now, but too potentially valuable to cut"... What is your strategy?

It has been a weird football year, so there has to be a lot of people in this situation...

Are you riding it out and hoping they get their shit together?

Selling for pennies on the dollar to try and win a game now?

Or... just throwing darts & cutting them to pick up bigger gambles/lottery tickets?

EDIT: It seems like many are missing the point. I'm not taking about having zero good players or a complete garbage team... I'm saying there are a lot of maybe really good/maybe total shit coin toss players this year, and it feels like I'm at a craps table where the last rolls have been 8, 6, 7, 7, 6, 7, 8,7, 8, 6, 7... That table is not fun.

The ASM10 dilemma

New updates come with new CHANGES. This time, the most underrated AR, the ASM10, got a buff. Many said it is "OP". Personally, I'm glad this gun got the spotlight for a change. For 3 season, the only viable meta gun is the AK117, Type 25, and MSMC.

The ASM10 had always been my favorite gun thanks to BO2,and admittedly it always been underperforming in the past season. Those that cries out how broken and OP, maybe you should stop getting attached to your old weapon, and try out the new for a change. For once, the BK57, LK24 & ASM10 is seeing use & love and the first thing you people do is mourn over your Type 25 and MSMC.

Meta changes, and we should adapt to that changes, NOT sticking to the old and constantly be in the same safety bubble.

This is just my opinion on it.
