Inherited money from Germany, trying to figure out the best way to get it in the USA; what is up with any additional taxation in the United States

I inherited a house from a relative in Germany. I sold the house and now the money is sitting in a bank account that I opened while in Germany.

I want to bring some of the money to the United States to invest it (my account there is not interest bearing) and leave some there.

What is the cheapest/easiest/best way to get the money here? Regular wire transfer and just pay the fees? Should I do it in one lump sum or small transactions?

Will I be taxed both in the USA and Germany? I have already paid inheritance taxes in Germany. I have asked my accountant in the United States, he said he didn't think so but didn't seem 100% sure. He said if I don't have to declare it I shouldn't.

Do you believe it is possible to change the base psyche and ideals of the United States? In regards to taxation and individualism.

So I think most liberals/democrats want America to be more similar to Western European nations, and everything political that is included in that(Universal Healthcare, at least some Universal Public College, public transportation etc..). I, at least very much want those things and with the Obama years I thought we were at least trending in that direction.

Part of me doubts it will ever happen because America was borne out of a individualistic mindset, and I think that permeates through the ideas of a lot of Americans. The why do I have to pay for other people's stuff, the I got mine and I worked hard for it, I don't want people being lazy. I think that just may be a base part of the idea of America for so many people, and I don't know if it will ever change.

Do you guys feel it is possible for the change in mindset I see as necessary for our country to change for the better? Do you see a slightly different mindset in millennials? Or do you believe that a change in mindset is not needed to implement improvements? Or could it be possible that I'm just an idiot and reading the whole situation wrong, and by and large most Americans don't think like this. Open to any ideas and looking forward to a discussion!

How did the taxation change pre- and post-revolutionary war in America? Did the early founders make any changes in taxes to enrich themselves and how was it balanced as funding for the state?

hi so im curious about the idea of taxes pre- and post- revolution and how the revolution itself might have changed how some of the founding fathers and the wealthy viewed taxation and how different were the tax codes pre- and post-revolution.

as well as asking when were the early changes of newer views/implementation of taxes, and if it was more geared towards a enriching the individual vs funding the state and how those two were balanced.

A big (silly and maybe stupid) question though that started this was, did Americans (from the wealthy/founders even to the lower classes, and within 2 generations of them so get a good span of time) get richer overall after the revolutionary war??

CMV: The European Union should institute high taxation on air travel in all member states
  1. Taxation schemes should meet several principles, of which two are particularly relevant for the question whether air travel should be higher taxed.
  2. The first principle is to make sure there is no unfair advantage in competition between one firm or sector and another firm or sector. Right now, air travel companies are grossly and unfairly advantaged over firms that offer transportation via other means - trains, busses, etc, since there is no taxation on the kerosene used by flights. This makes it very hard for e.g. trains to compete with airplanes.
  3. The second principle is to make the polluter pay. All sorts of motorized travel cause pollution, but for the sake of the argument let me focus on the emissions of greenhouse gasses, which are a main source of climate change. Airline passengers do not pay for the damage they cause by emitting greenhouse gasses. Since everyone, independent of where they are situated on the political landscape believes that the polluter should pay, we should increase the price of transport by air (of people and goods) so as to reflect that pollution.
  4. However, it is extremely hard for one country within Europe to implement these measures. Their aviation industries would be hit hard, since the traffic would move to the nearby cheaper country.
  5. Therefore, the European Union must make sure that all its member states work together to implement the same taxation scheme on air travel. This will lead to price increases in all flights arriving in or departing in Europe, and hence won’t harm the individual aviation industries.
  6. The aims of this proposal are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create economic fairness between different transport industries. The aim is not to generate maximal tax revenue. The precise tax design should be constructed in such a way to meet those aims.

I am in the process of applying for a PhD in the states while the taxation bill is going to the senate - help!

Hi,

I emailed my school I am applying to and they do not have a plan yet for if the additional taxes on students become law. Does anyone have advice for how my plan should proceed with my application this year? I intend to still apply and hope that the change affecting graduate students is amended and cut out when it passes through the senate, but I’m not sure what to do if I get an offer and how to figure out if the changes would cause me to be unable to do the PhD. I only want to do a PhD at this time if it is funded enough for me to not be in debt, and can’t accept an offer otherwise.

Thanks!
