TIL the controversial Strangler Cairn, a 4m high self-supporting rock structure that cost $700,000aus, has a strangler fig atop it, which the artist intended to wrap around the cairn as it grew. But that species of fig gets its nutrients from a host tree, so in this case it can't actually grow

Strangler Fig Trees...
These trees are killers. I am not 100%, but I think these are an ME, for me at least. What do y'all think?

To clarify, these trees cut off the water, food, sunlight from the trees they encase until that tree eventually dies. But they do say they help the trees from being uprooted in a hurricane or something.

This is the progression as I understand it.

Update on strangler fig experiment with Ficus Abutilifolia. If you look close you can see a root making its way down. Plastic is filled with peat moss. Couldn't get sphagnum moss, thought this was the next best thing.

Strangler fig. Their seeds, often bird-dispersed, germinate in crevices atop other trees. These seedlings grow their roots downward and envelop the host tree while also growing upward to reach into the sunlight zone above the canopy.
