A list of puns related to "Soil consolidation"
Given we only compact the top layer of a proyect's soil, how do we assure that the underlying soil wont consolidate.
In the case of an area that is being excavated and compacted, I assume no additional soil pressure is endured and the engineer must only calculate settlement under the proposed building's loads.
However, If the proyect site has a Fill , would this mean we must calculate the settlement of the existing soil grade plus the effects of the compacted fill?
Also, once we know the max settlement of an area, how do we safely design a structure to account for these.
Thanks and sorry if confusing question
I work in land development and the project I'm working on is receiving Geo technical compaction result for a road base. We are usually provided with the Moisture Content (Molding Water Content (MWC), Modified Optimum Water Content(MOWC)), density (wet and dry), and the compaction percentage aiming to get a compaction above 95%. Generally these tests pass, managing to achieve 95% compaction, however sometimes there is a large variance between the MWC and the MOWC. The soil on our site has an MOWC of around 12%, sometimes the tests show a MWC of 5-7%.
I consulted the Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD) which directed me to ATM D1557 (Laboratory Compaction Characteristics of Soil Using Modified Effort ) which states that test samples shouldn't vary more then 2%-4% MWC from the MOWC.
Question: Whats the interaction between water and soil around the MOWC?
Can consolidation occur because the MOWC is at 12% or is it null because the soil isn't saturated.
How can a cohesionless soil be over or normally consolidated.
Granular material does not consolidate.
Working on a problem where approximately 6-12" of dredged material will be placed over an existing salt marsh in the Mid Atlantic. I've been asked to estimate the expected consolidation of the foundation soil (subgrade) due to the increased loading from the fill material. I have very limited existing soil information, but I can make some assumptions that may apply to a general salt marsh or point to examples from other projects. I've had a difficult time finding other projects where consolidation was measured. Any advice or guidance?
Ashnad'darii brushed her wings for the tenth time that rotation. She had disconnected from the linked particle hard light projector a while back after hearing Sri'icla's report on the situation with Humanity. The Breyyanik had apparently joined their species together somehow, and were much closer and more dangerous allies to Humanity than the initial Vinarii contact fleet had been.
Sri'icla was still monitoring the situation from high above the system's orbital plane, but Ashnad'darii knew that she was being allowed to see only what the humans wanted her to see. It was after all very easy to isolate technological experiments when you had a whole moon to burrow through in secret. Humanity and the Breyyanik were becoming more threatening. It may actually be good to pursue a proper alliance with them if possible later.
Her intelligence operations within the Trikkec Autonomous Systems suggested that a small fleet was being rallied between two of the systems to go pick another fight with Humanity and the Breyyanik. Ashnad'darii hoped that they would fail. Humanity was... fun. Interesting. Strange and stupid enough to show her defiance, but that made them all the more intriguing.
She received another message from Sri'icla.
*The humans are deploying anti-missile laser satellites around their home planet, moon, 1st planet, as well as a large asteroid in their inner belt. It is believed that a Breyyanik colony is being constructed inside the asteroid based on the constant shielding present above its surface. Current readings suggest that our fleet would deplete half of its ammunition to penetrate their shields.*
Smart. Ashnad'darii smiled. After the destruction of their colony, the humans were taking steps to ensure it couldn't happen the same way again. Another message pinged.
*My Empress, we have apprehended a team of 70 Trikkec assassins. What do you wish to be done with them?*
She thought for a moment, then sent her response.

We're always willing to try anything if it will improve the workflow, save time and money, keep things safer, increase organization skills. When I was at Penn State back in 12-14, I took a basic GIS course (and I've retained almost zero of those ideas which were presented). Our company used ArcMap to organize publically available GIS data into desired layers and line work. A couple of us will then export those feature lines (i.e. soils data, public LiDAR, wetlands, public parcel data) as shape files and drop those into our base maps when the need is just for a feasibility study or quick contours for a lot consolidation plan.
We've always talked about setting up a GIS system, but unfortunately, no one at our office knows how to do more than export shape lines.
Is there a soul out here that can explain what a properly used GIS database can do for surveyors and engineers? And/or, can explain anything about GIS? I know I can open my text book, but that seems too easy!
Does anyone know of any empirical correlations to determine consolidation properties (OCR, preconsolidation pressure, etc.) of clay? Normally, I would do this by way of a consolidation test but this was not performed on the soil layer in question. I have found equations developed by Mayne and Kemper (1988), but would like to see if anyone has anything they typically use when a consolidation test is not possible.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
I was reading through what others have suggested are "must have" mods, and as per /u/Kabanisko 's suggestion, I pulled out all my mods, started a new colony and began looking for things that started to annoy me.
I tried to stick to mods that only did the following:
I tried to avoid mods that changed how the overall game behaved (e.g. Prison Labor) or added new items to the game.
My list is as below. Please tell me which ones I should add to this; a friend of mine has this game on his wishlist and I'd like to share with him this consolidated list of which mods to get and why I chose them.
Let me know if there are others that would make the game easier to get addicted to understand for new people on the Rim.
EDIT: Thanks to everyone for their comments; have added the suggestions into the list below.
EDIT: Some of these mods are listed in the ModFAQ

EDIT: I have gone through all the requests for "must have" mods over the past ~2 years and have compiled them into this post; there's ~100 mods here now. I reckon that's a good number of "starter" mods.

I met him only once. Heβd come at Grampβs request to look into a car abandoned not far below our house.
Weβd heard, late last night, two vehicles going by our place, coming down the Trace. That old dirt road ran up and around the side of a spur of mountainside that was part of the ridgeline that separated our county from the next over. A pass you could cut through, so to speak, to get from one county to the next. A shortcut. You could shave off maybe thirty miles going that way instead of taking the long way around over paved roads.
But it was a hard way to go, steep and rough, and deeply rutted and gullied by runoff. Impassable in wet weather, but if it was dry, and you had a vehicle with clearance enough, and were careful, you could make it.
So it was most likely one of those. Old black car, and it hadnβt been there yesterday.
Didnβt look to me to have anything wrong with it, but it Was sitting in a deep bed of gravel off to the side of the road, over which the water flowed in a broad, shallow, widened stream when the creek was up. So it might have gotten stuck.
No plates, as I recall, but that wasnβt necessarily an unheard of thing back in the hills, away from the towns or the state two-lane. A little unusual still, though.
Windows down. No papers in the glove box, and no keys in the ignition. Curious.
He and Gramp had looked in the trunk. Heβd stood there for a bit, looking down. Looking thoughtful- like. Maybe heβd noticed something that gave him pause. Or smelled a trace of something.
Marijuana was now the main cash crop in that time and place. Unlike years before when Gramp had made good money from the βshine he cooked back up in Pine Holler. Good, clear-running stream of fresh water there. Convenient to the house, but well hidden.
The climate just right for the growing of it, and the rich soil. And plenty of places for a good patch away from prying eyes, especially the higher and deeper into the mountains you went.
And a lot of money to be made. You see, like Gramp and I had, a youngish man everybody knows ainβt got a job come into a dealership and start pulling banded stacks of bills out of a paper Piggly-Wiggly bag to pay cash for a new car, you know where the money came from.
They closed the trunk and went to stand by the passenger side of the car to talk a bit. Gramp standing with arms folded, looking thoughtful himself.
He standing leaning with one hand on the roof of the car, the other on his g

There is not a single floristβs shop, every garden contains nothing more colourful than grass, and the residents seem to hate beauty in all its forms. Every day I am surprised and humbled by the fact I escaped their attempts to assimilate me into their drab mass. I fear that one day, it may take me by surprise unless I discover what exactly protected me.
The factor could neither be in my genes nor my upbringing. My parents were obscenely typical; my father David worked as an accountant and spent his evenings watching sport. Sometimes he would work on little wooden sculptures and this itself was considered a very radical hobby. So much so that over the years I noticed he began to only work on his sculptures when no-one was around and then not at all by the time I was entering adolescence.
My mother Eve was even more ordinary. She worked at a call centre, knitted in her spare time, and invited the neighbours around once a week on a Saturday for drinks and pleasant conversation. Conversation so pleasant and inoffensive that if you listened for too long, you'd soon forget there was anything more to life than dog walks and evening television. I knew the danger of listening too closely and tuned the adults out to the best of my ability; this was fine since they had no interest in what children thought anyway, so I was not expected to hear them. Usually, I hid away in my room, working out ways around the parental blocks on the internet so that I could access sites I was not meant to see.
Once, when I was eight, it was raining heavily. The rain developed into a storm, and I lost access to the internet. Boredom can motivate us to do things we never imagined before, and so I left my room. I slipped into the lounge without the adults noticing and settled into a dark corner where they could ignore me.
To my surprise, they were for once discussing something interesting; The Flower Men.
Henry Weaver was new to town and wanted to go home. He had a labrador that he know would be scared by the storm and he didn't want her to make as mess of his house. But the older residents, including my parents, warned him. βThe Flower Man comes out on nights like these,β mother said. βYou best wait until it lets up. David can even drive you back.β
With a little laugh Henry said, βI saw the plaque, but come on Eve, Belle is probably in a right panic.β Henry strode towards his coat.

Errico Malatesta
>Anarchy is a word that comes from the Greek, and signifies, strictly speaking, "without government": the state of a people without any constituted authority. Before such an organization had begun to be considered possible and desirable by a whole class of thinkers, so as to be taken as the aim of a movement (which has now become one of the most important factors in modern social warfare), the word "anarchy" was used universally in the sense of disorder and confusion, and it is still adopted in that sense by the ignorant and by adversaries interested in distorting the truth. The common interpretation of the word does not misconceive its true etymological signification, but is derived from it, owing to the prejudice that government must be a necessity of the organization of social life, and that consequently a society without government must be given up to disorder, and oscillate between the unbridled dominion of some and the blind vengeance of others. (Anarchy)
>Man, like all living beings, adapts himself to the conditions in which he lives, and transmits by inheritance his acquired habits. Thus, being born and having lived in bondage, being the descendant of a long line of slaves, man, when he began to think, believed that slavery was an essential condition of life, and liberty seemed to him impossible. In like manner, the workman, forced for centuries to depend upon the goodwill of his employer for work, that is, for bread, and accustomed to see his own life at the disposal of those who possess the land and capital, has ended in believing that it is his master who gives him food, and asks ingenuously how it would be possible to live, if there were no master over him? (Anarchy)
>And even if there existed men of infinite goodness and knowledge, even if we assume what has never happened in history and what we believe could never happen, namely, that the government might devolve upon the ablest and best, would the possession of government power add anything to their beneficent influence? Would they not rather paralyze or destroy it? For those who govern find it necessary to occupy themselves with things which they do not understand, and, above all, to waste the greater part of their energy in keeping themselves in power, striving to satisfy their friends, holding the discontented in check, and mastering the rebellious. When you think of Primarchs who would thrive in the world of politics, the obvious answers might come to mind. Roboute and his statesmanship. Fulgrim and his charm. Horus and his almost gravitational charisma. Sanguinius and his.... Sanguinius. There's even an argument to made for the likes of Perturabo or Alpharius.
But the one primarch we see consistently leverage his political weight to levels far above his supposed station is Mortarion.
Yup. Dour, grim Mortarion. The man of few words and a complete disregard for the Geneva Convention.
To note a few of his achievements:
Sorcery - a term laden with historical meaning and far more recent suffering at the outset of the Great Crusade. Filled with the memories of the hellscape Barbarus, Mortarion was infamous in his single-minded hatred of psykers and witches, viewing them as relics of the Old Night. As tools of warp-touched demagogues and unfathomable monsters of the unknown. Few were as outspoken in their beliefs as Mortarion but similarly, few were as effective in the pursuit of their goals.
While many look to the famous rivalry between Magnus and the Wolf-King Leman Russ as the catalyst of the Council, it was Mortarion who originally brought to issue into play. Forming a core group of dissenters, the Death Lord was joined by Corax, Leman Russ and Rogal Dorn, amongst others.

##Afghanistan, February 1969
Following the developments in the nation with the election of center-left Hezb-e Khalq Milli in the 1966 elections and the focus on dirigisme for our macroeconomic policies, the new government must prove itself to be competent and follow through with a key part of national development, a part so crucial that most if not all nations must undertake in order to ensure equality and competitivity in the national economy.
That is, of course, the issue of land reform, an imperative issue that must be undertaken with care and responsibility, lest it provide a result that is as bad if not worse than the status quo. For instance, in many developing nations with no, minor, or ineffective land reform programs, the poorer half of farmers control below 10% of farming land, restricting their income from these lands, as well as farm enterprises and employment.
Land concentration not only increases inequalities in a nation, but also decreases farm output and slows growth; in nations with food insecurity, bridging the βinefficiency gapβ is crucial, as it allows for a reduction of prices of food and the maximization of output can ensure that famines do not occur during periods of natural reductions of output.
It is for the aforementioned reasons that the government of Afghanistan has therefore launched the National Committee for Land Reform (NCLR). It, as well as AMLAK, will be part of the Program for Land Reform (PLR), which has the following objectives: (i) Formalize and upgrade informal land settlements, including mapping plots of lands to show the value and ownership of land; (ii) establish a legal framework that allows the Afghan government to identify, manage and obtain

The Will:
We never said this would be easy. The quest to fulfill Germanyβs destiny is one made after centuries of backsliding, and it will take centuries more to achieve it in its entirety. When we speak of a Thousand Year Reich it is not merely a boast: it is a time frame for our plans. One day the Aryan shall spread himself across the earth, pushing others to the side as his blood makes room for itself upon the soil. One day the Jew and the Untermench shall be purged, the invalid and the deviant shall be a distant memory, the mentally unwell and the weak shall be put out of the gene pool. Culture, wealth and technology shall be ushered into a golden age as humanity itself is improved by the triumph of the Overmanβs will. But that is not a day that any German alive today will live to see.
Instead, it falls to our generation to build for ourselves and our children solid foundations which the storms of time will not be able to break apart. Thanks to Hitler we have been given a chance: in his healthy days only decisive military action could have saved the blood from slavery and dilution. But those days are over: today it is our duty to build an unbreakable foundation of Blood, Soil and Steel for our race. To entrench the party in Germany, Germany in Europe and Europe in the world such that no misfortune will ever see us laid low, that is the mission handed to this generation. It is in this way that we of the National Socialist German Workers Party can best serve the Volk.
But defense alone is not a solution. The Reich must ensure that its steady growth in the east is not compromised by its global rivals. It is of paramount importance that no other race or state grows powerful enough to threaten the Reich directly, and so Germany must be watchful of the world beyond Europe. The Americans, the Japanese, the Russians, perhaps in time the Hindus and the Arabs all have the potential to pose a threat. But, no matter the militarists delusions, Germany dose not yet have the strength to keep them all in check. So Germany shall ally with one and attack another, always working to ensure that the European continent is safe from their grasp.
We have the greatest confidence in the Reichβs ability to outlast her foes, given proper management fr
