A list of puns related to "Shanghai tunnels"
I've been waiting for the Shanghai tunnels to open back up. Every month I check and I'm sad to see they are temporarily closed. It seems to me they will never open back up again!!!
Someone said there are underground tunnels that some people used to play music in many years ago. One man claimed they were called βShanghai tunnelsβ and you need to enter through a business door, no public access. Has anyone else heard of this? No idea how true or untrue it is but very curious as Google isnβt a help at all
I just started leasing a building off first avenue for my haunted themed bar and experience. The basement has 1 possibly 2 entrances to what I believe is the Shanghai tunnel routes. One is sealed at the bottom with concrete and then higher up with wood, I kind of want to take the wood off and see whatβs behind.
So I've been wanting to explore the shanghai tunnels a while now out in Portland but hear that you don't really go through them on the tour and was curious if anyone knew of any alternative means for a more extensive personally guided tour?
and just because it's myth, does that make it not true??

I heard about a Shanghai tunnel entrance in Beaverton that was βsecretβ and never learned of the location of it. If anyone knows that would be great, but if not itβs fine. Me and a few friends wanna check it out, and we wonβt make a mess of the place, spray paint, do drugs or anything in there. We will leave it the same as we entered (also a photo shoot in there would be pretty rad).
This was taken at the Portland Shanghai Tunnels. If you've never heard of it, it's an underground tunnel system beneath Portland. They used to drug able bodied men and "Shanghai" them onto ships where they would work as slaves; and the women were sold into prostitution. The kidnappers spread broken glass throughout the tunnels and take the shoes of the victims, so they couldn't run away. As you can imagine, it's rumored to be very haunted.
My friends and I decided to take a "ghost tour" of the tunnels. Unfortunately we didn't experience anything first hand, but were snapping as many pictures as we could to try and catch a ghost. It was extremely dusty down there, so I think the orbs you see are just dust. But, if you look at the back left corner you can see the shape of a person with no face. In the shape, it looks like an old timey hat (maybe 20s which was the busiest era for the tunnels), a nose, a chin and a body. At first I thought it was just a spot on the wall, but if you look harder it seems to be transparent, because you can see bricks behind it. Let me know what you think!

EDIT: if you read my post it says "possible" shadow person. I've actually emailed the guy who ran the tour at the Shanghai Tunnels and he told me he thinks it's a good piece of edvidence. I should have mentioned this in my post originally but this picture was taken back in 2007. I literally had brain surgery back in 2010 (brain tumor) and my memories come back to me late.
I've spent a lot of time looking at this picture over the last 10 years, but I don't know what it is. Could be a mortar... could be a shadow person. I have no idea.
I've never posted on this sub before, I'm surprised at how rude people can be in their reactions. Sorry for wasting your time I guess...
Hello, I will be visiting Portland and I wanted to get some advice on the Shanghai tunnels tours. I've done some research and I know that the stories about the practice of shanghai'ng in the tunnels is pretty much unsubstantiated, but I'm still interested in taking a tour. I'm more interested in history than I am in ghost stories, but I'd like to physically experience the tunnels and see as much as possible.
I found two sites that seem to be offering tours:
Are both of these tours active? Is one better than the other? I read that the tour that meets at Hobo's just goes in the basement as access to the tunnels has been closed off. Is that true?
Has anyone taken these tours recently? What do you recommend? Thanks!
Edit: grammar
Alright folks itβs time for our bi-weekly r/Portland meetup! This time weβll be heading to the Shanghai Tunnel Bar near Down Town. This bar is located in the basement so just head downstairs. Parking is nonexistant down town so best option will be to use TriMet. This location has pool, pinball (bring some change) and awesome fries.
We will have a few tables reserved in the back so keep an eye out for those Snoo signs. Come and share your Snowpocalypse survival stories, I almost ate my couch in an attempt for survival.

Hey! any urban explorers out there? I was wondering if anyone has explored the tunnels? or at least found them.
So, has anyone done the tour under Hobos? We did it tonight and I'm curious of other folks opinion. I was kind of expecting actual tunnels, and feel like what we got was a tour of Hobos basement. Also, has anyone been in any other parts of the tunnels?
ive been hearing alot of this place lately and the reaction is always the same when i tell my friends i have been to this bar yet. Is it good or worth the time to see it? Every time i search for info, i only get a picture of a menu and the outside
I'm an Architecture student at Portland State and would like to make a graphic for a project showing the extents of the underground tunnels throughout that area of town.
I've done a little bit of research and haven't found much in the way of documentation, just a lot of arguing and speculation over whether the tunnels were used for shanghaiing. However, I wont be focusing on that in my project. I am simply looking for a document that will allow to expose the extensive routs underneath the city.
Thank you, any information helps!
