A list of puns related to "Requiem for a Dream"
Hi, Iβm looking for movies similar to these mainly in feel. Movies that will leave me thinking about the movie afterwards, ones that have a deep, emotional impact. Depressing, psychological and sad movies are welcome, and so are uplifting dramas (like To The Bone or Good Will Hunting). Iβve seen so many different movies and Iβm trying to find a new film that will leave me pondering, speechless and immersed emotionally. Thank you very much!
Edit: Gotten a lot of great new suggestions and movies Iβve seen. Thank you!
I loved requiem by the way
When it came out I was entering the "movie buff" phase of my 20's, I had recently seen Aronofsky's PI and thought it would be a good watch. It was, director got an amazing performance out of everyone, even Marlon Wayans. It made me feel physically dirty when watching it though. It's a rough ride. I haven't seen it in 15 years, and I have inclination to either, it's just a draining experience.
I haven't seen this since it first came out in 2009, and I swear I forgot just how damn bleak this story is. Most post-apocalyptic tales ARE bleak, but Cormac McCarthy's The Road is a high-test super concentrated meditation on ultimate despair.
Few films have the guts to go this bleak, and though it is a fantastic film, it is damn near unwatchable due to its brutal and unwaveringly doomed vision of the future.
Every time a gun is put to the child's head, you almost find yourself rooting for the gun, because you want the kid to have an easy send off in this monstrous prediction of what's to come.
Still, beyond the brutality, the gut wrenching sorrow, and the near bottomless hopelessness, is a tale of a Father and Son trying just to love one another in an environment that is the antithesis to all love, and that they maintain their love and hope throughout, is the true wonder of storytelling.
If you like a movie that pulls no punches and leaves you hollowed out, The Road is your movie. It's not an easy road to walk, but nothing good is ever easy.
Edit: Should have saved this for tomorrow. It's the ultimate Father's Day film.
Ive seen many people say that Requiem for a Dream is a movie that you dont need to watch twice, for some id say absolutely but man I got so much more out of it this 2nd time. I didnt hate it my 1st watch but I was also 17 and the ending was so dark I told myself I wouldnt watch it again. I also was just generally kind of distracted my 1st watch and didnt take in all of the small details and amazing camera and filming methods.
Im now 20 much more into films than I was and my Girlfriend wanted to watch it so I watched it again for her. This time it was just absolutely breathtaking for me. The cinematography, the score, the performances. It felt real, it was gritty, I often said it was unrealistic just how fast and how extreme everyones problems got but I now see just how wrong I was on that.
Its a hearbreaking and realistic movie that shows every little detail in the lives of 4 addicts no matter how gross or disturbing they may be, and id reccomend it to anybody interested in film.
I love the films moral and the way it tells the story, complimented by the soundtrack. Looking for more films like this.
Firstly, I think I just found a new director where his movie might appeal to me. Just checked Darren Aronofsky filmography, already saw Black Swan before. Did not care for Mother!
Now to the movie at hand...this movie was scary. I think Aronofsky did a great job with the subject mattet; Addiction and Drugs. Hell, after watching that movie I cannot in my right man partake in it.
Just wanted to take about the end, it was just so brutal and depressing. Each character had a very big loss in the end. Also the acting, editing and style of the movie was top notch.
Will advise to watch just once..
I know Iβm about 19 years too late but I just saw this movie last night and while it was a great movie and I understand the depth of it, I just feel like it tried a little too hard at the end to be more depressing. Idk how to describe it but the way the doctors were acting extremely cold seemed a bit forced and having it seem like the world was against the main protagonists just seemed like it was trying way too hard to have a sad ending. What are your thoughts?
On another note the use of lux aeterna was amazing, Iβd obviously heard the song before but seeing it used in the film for the first time was awesome.
Because if anyone has seen it that movie will fill you with feelings of disgust and horror just as much as any "traditional" horror film, it also has a slow burning build up to a finale that leaves you feeling completely horrified.
The movie is the best film Iβve ever seen in regards to addiction. If follows 4 people, 3 young adults who are addicted to heroin and an elderly lady who becomes addicted to amphetamines prescribed to her by her doctor to help her lose weight. It is an uncomfortable, horrifying ride that sees all 4 characters be driven to the lowest of the low due to their addictions and actions and will open your eyes on what truly is a drug and the dangers in it all. It is so well put together in regards to how it is filmed, the shots that are used, the showing of how disconnected everyone is with each other due to their addiction.
This movie is the most impactful movie about addiction Iβve ever seen as well as the most difficult and disturbing movie to watch. It is something I found my horrifying and scary than even the best horror movie out there. It is a film I think all should see to understand the powers that addiction has on you, whether that addiction be something as horrifying as heroin or something as overlooked as junk food.
If you are interested, it is available for streaming on Hulu.

EDIT: any other PWEI crusties here?
This was the first movie Iβve seen by Darren Aranofsky and Iβm definitely going to check out some of his other work.
This movie was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, and as a young man whoβs an only child with a single mother, was really impactful. I havenβt been around a whole lot because of college so seeing the discussion when Jared Leto buys his mom a TV was really rough.
If you want to watch this movie you should hurry as itβs being removed from Netflix in January.
