I donβt know if itβs only me who got the vibe, but, I truly believe Ross and Phoebe low-key hated each other. They were so different and pushed each otherβs buttons by being themselves.
Phoebe is by far the weirdest character in the show, but it is very likely her weirdness is a clever disguise designed to cover her activities as a spy in the Eastern bloc. The evidence is all there.
Phoebe's history on the show is - compared to characters like Ross or Rachel - shrouded in mystery. She was an adult during the second half of the 80s, yet we see not a single flashback, hear not a single story (well, one, actually and that one is very suspicious) and we have no idea what she was doing at that time.
Phoebe grew up with a drug dealer mother who killed herself, sister who despised her and she was living on the street since her mother's suicide when she was 14. Yet she speaks at least English, French and Italian and has no problem pronouncing native African names. She manages to charm a foreign Diplomat (who she met when giving massages in front of the UN), could speak about international affairs yet she could not fit into established New York high society.
She has a statute of limitation since the start of the show and is not allowed even a passport. This lasts for a long time, but we see or hear nothing about her crime, which means it must have happened some time before the story starts.
And now it becomes interesting.
Phoebe was never shy about her past, describing her crimes and all the insane things that happened to her on the street, yet the moment her date - a policeman - said he went through her files and had seen some "pretty weird stuff" she immediately stopped him and pushed him out of the door so her friends could not hear anything. Why? What was the "stuff" he mentioned? Could not have been her weird street crimes, they knew them. Must have been something else.
So... Speaks foreign languages, knows how to charm diplomats, has something in her records that a Manhattan policeman considers "pretty weird" and that she doesn't want her friends to know even though they know everything else... All indirect and vague. Do we have any direct evidence?
Phoebe shares one story from her past that is never mentioned again and it is a big one - She lived in Czechoslovakia for a time. In Prague to be exact. She doesn't say "visited" or "stayed in", she says "lived in". This implies a prolonged stay, many months at least. Judging by the fact she lived with Monica long before the show even started (moved out before the show starts) we can assume her stay in Prague must have happened in the late 80s. By the

Not Lisa Kudrow, who I'm sure is a lovely lady, especially after seeing her in the reunion. I'm crushing on the character Phoebe.
For reference, I'm 33 and this is the fourth time I'm watching FRIENDS, and the second time watching it with my wife. My wife identifies more with Monica, with all her attention to detail.
But Phoebe... O dear Lord she's so cute! Her quirkiness and weird choice of clothing articles and heart of gold, and her somewhat hidden sexuality which is often teased but never explicitly discussed.
Ok great, I'm crushing on a fictional character. Haven't had that since I was a kid.
I know it's a weird analogy but if you saw Friends, you know there was an episode in which Phoebe sang for the kids at a library and kids loved her because no one told truth to the kids and she did. I think the same is true for Zevon.
Late to the Friends party, if there ever was one, but damn I love the shade Phoebe throws at Rachel since she had a baby. I relate to that so much right now with all my friends popping out kids.
Memorable scenes include:
[Scene: Monicaβs apartment. Monica and Phoebe are reading magazines when the phone rings and Phoebe reaches to pick it up]
Monica: (to Phoebe) No, no, donβt get it. Let the machine pick up.
Phoebe: Oh, yeah. Could be Rachel asking if someone could baby-sit again.
Monica: It could be Amanda!
Phoebe: Oh, youβre right! I was just kidding about Rachel. Babysitting is a gas!
βββ
(Emma continues crying in the background) Monica: Breaks your heart doesnβt it
Phoebe: It really does⦠how long do you think we have to stay?
ββ
[Scene: Ross and Rachelβs, Emma continues to cry.]
Rachel: Oh my God! How long has she been crying?
Monica: About a week and a half.
Phoebe: Well alright, looks like you guys have got it under control so Iβm just gonna go. (She gets up and Rachel looks at her, upset, and Monica just stares.) No! Really? Misery really does love company. All right! (She sits back down.)
Monica: Rach, try holding her a different way.
Rachel: You guys, Iβm doing the best I can, anyone else is welcome to try.
Phoebe: Alright, Iβll try, fine! Yes, Okay!
Rachel: Here you go. (Hands Emma to Phoebe)
Phoebe: Shh! Nothing works with this child! (Hands her back.)
βββ
Rachel: (sticks her head out too) Well, get back in there and talk!
Phoebe: (goes back in) I'm Rachel. It's so annoying when I put Emma on the phone to talk with my friends.
Rachel: (comes out again) What!?
Phoebe: (comes out too) Well, some things are just hard to say to your face.
βββ
Chandler: Honey, I got us that room at the Woodford Inn this weekend.
Monica: That place in Vermont?
Rachel: Wait, you can't go away this weekend! It's Emma's birthday!
Monica: Well, can't you just have the party when we get back?
Rachel: No, that day... that won't be her real birthday!
Chandler: Gee if only she were one and had no idea what the hell a birthday was!
Ross: C'mon you guys, this is really important to us.
Monica: Well, I'm sorry, but Chandler and I could really use a weekend away. You know, to reconnect... emotionally.
Rachel: Well, can't you just go to Vermont the next day?
Ross: Yeah, we want everyone to be there.
βββ
Thereβs also the scene where itβs Phoebeβs birthday and Ross and Rachel are two hours late and they have to move Phoebe to a smaller table.
... keep reading on reddit β‘I was rewatching Friends a few days ago and I'm at the part where Emma is born. And I noticed Phoebe's reaction to Emma being slightly... aggressive.
When she first sees her, she says, Ooh, you're so cute! "Oh, I could squeeze your little head!" Then a few episodes later, she says, "She's just so cute. Oh, I wanna bite her ear off and use it as a sucking candy!"
And I was wondering whether Phoebe might have cute aggression. Cute aggression is basically a condition where when the person sees something super cute, they have the urge to commit an aggressive act. I'm not sure what you think, so I'm interested to hear your perspectives!
Phoebe from friends, gives me such bisexual vibes, its really annoying that she doesn't get the proper bi recognition that she deserves.. Sad because its probably because the time that the show was made in but she had hinted about it a lot..
Random post I know but I kinda just wanted t o get that out there, BI ICON
February 16th, 1967- Phoebe and Ursula are born. Her biological mother gives them up, Lily raises them.
1967- Phoebe's biological father Frank walks out on her and Ursula.
1967-1980 - Phoebe and Ursula are raised by Lily and their Step-dad. They lived an impoverished lifestyle, and their step-dad often sold his blood to buy them food.
1980- Phoebe's mother{non-biological}, Lily, kills herself when Phoebe is 13. Around this time, her Stepdad goes back to prison.
1980-1981- After moving to the city, she lived in a burned out Buick LaSabre for a while. Later got hepatitis after a pimp spit in her mouth. Phoebe's mugging days begin.
1981- Phoebe's stepdad is back in prison, Phoebe was living with an albino guy who was cleaning windshields outside port authority, and then he killed himself. And then, she found aroma-therapy. Around this time, she mugs Ross outside of a comic-book store.
1983- Spent her sweet sixteen being chased around a tire yard by an escaped mental patient who in his own words wanted to 'kill her or whatever'
1985- Living in a gremlin with a guy named cindy who talked to his hand. Age 18.
Between 1987 and 1993- Phoebe moves in with Monica, later moving in with her grandmother.
1994- Season 1 of friends.
I put all this information together by scanning through episodes and searching for quotes online. I definitely left something out. There's a gray area in between 1985 and 1993{that could've been when she was living with Monica, but Monica is like 1 or 2 years younger than Phoebe, and I doubt Monica moved to the city as soon as she turned 18, and they weren't living together for very long}. It's also said that her stepdad was in prison multiple times, and she has stabbed a cop{probably in her mugging days}. I compiled this info by looking for places in episodes where she actually mentions her past. She briefly mentions living in prague for a while, but I have no idea where to put that.{Possibly somewhere in the gray area between 1987 and 1993?}
