If we push for people to sterilize their pets due to overpopulation in shelters and feral animals, why do we make it so hard for humans to get sterilized when we have an overwhelmed foster system?

Edit: Some people have misunderstood me, I am NOT referring to forced sterilization. I am referring to an individual deciding to get their tubes tied, or a vasectomy, and finding it nearly impossible. I've noticed this especially for women, if you are young, unmarried, and childless you will find it extremely difficult.

CMV: Those who buy pets from responsible breeders are not a major cause in pet overpopulation.

Many people seem to be hell-bent on convincing people that buying a pet from a breeder is majorly contributing to the overpopulation of pets. I completely disagree.

Buying a pet from a breeder (we will assume that it is a responsible breeder and not a puppy/kitten mill) usually comes with a clause in a contract that confirms that you will spay/neuter your pet if they aren’t already. This means that if your pet gets loose, it does not have a chance to impregnate another animal or become pregnant. Buying from a breeder also weeds out many people because of pricing, and rarely are these pets allowed to roam or are re-homed.

Let’s talk about cats as an example. Since these cats usually live such protected and stress-free lives, they stick around for, on average, 15 years. That’s 15 entire years that a family has a constant cat, and when that cat dies, they’ll most likely get another from another breeder. This focus on only buying from breeders could shut down things like kitten mills and backyard breeders, reducing the amount of un-spayed/un-neutered kittens.

If anything, buying from exclusively breeders helps the overpopulation problem by not feeding into the demand for pets. The pay-wall and breeder selection process also helps by weeding out those who would get a pet only to realize that they aren’t financially stable enough for one, as well as commanding more attention be paid to exactly what you’re paying for. It also could mean that there would be fewer neglect issues, as nobody would want to starve their $2,000 dog, and breeders normally give basic instructions on how to care for the animal.

And of course the cherry on top would be that vets could have more time per patient to diagnose, treat, and develop new ways to help our companions!

PSA: You can help prevent cat overpopulation by getting your pets spayed and neutered!

I'm a caretaker for a colony of community cats at an apartment complex. I just got the bad news that I need to take down my feeding station or it's going to get thrown away because the owner of the property thinks its unsightly and that the cats are a nuisance. I understand, but here's the thing: removing my feeding station does not address the core of the problem, which is that many pet owners do not get their pets spayed and neutered!

When unfixed pet cats are allowed to roam freely or illegally abandoned outside, they find each other and rub uglies with each other. This contributes to the problem of cat overpopulation because free-roaming cats are having kittens, which grow up to be free-roaming cats who have more kittens. Female cats can get pregnant as early as 4 months old!

I am a volunteer who is paying out of pocket to have the cats in my area (who are not pets, and are not owned by anybody) spayed, neutered, fed, and sheltered. I am actively trying to trap any kittens and/or sociable cats I find to get them off the street and into good homes. I am working with rescue agencies like Whiskers Rescue and Nuzzles & Co to sterilize these cats so they cannot procreate. Unfortunately, though, new cats are showing up all the time despite my efforts and the efforts of the other caretakers in the apartments around me.

Please please PLEASE get your pets spayed and neutered, cats AND dogs. If you need financial assistance in getting your pet sterilized, talk to your vet or your nearby rescue agencies. There are resources out there and donation pools that people can tap into if they are in financial need.

If you see backyard breeding in your area (aka if somebody's cat or dog is having babies every year), please educate them and/or offer them assistance in getting their pet transported to the vet to get the procedure done.

I can't do it alone.

I have Geico for my car insurance and they are offering me pet insurance through embrace for 26 a month.

Annual reimbursement limit - $15k

Annual deductible - $200

Reimbursement percentage - 90%

Is this something I need? I can afford it but should I wait till she is older?

[TOMT][Book of Illustrations or Comic][probably 90s or 2000s] A book of illustrations named ''The Garden of Monsters'' or something, about genetic engineering and its consequences, in which people have access to all kinds of domestic creatures and monsters as pets.

I once read a magazine that followed the history of SCI FI since it started and how it had evolved, it tackled SCI FI in general in a chronological order. It was a series of special tiny documentaries about cinema, books, comics, music etc all about Science Fiction. i remember that for the issue about the 90s or perhaps the 2000s, they enlisted a bunch of things and there was this book, graphic novel or something about a future in which scientists have manipulated genetics to such point that people have tiny monsters at home and bizarre creatures totally domestic. I remember it was named something like ''The Garden of Monsters'' ''the garden something....'', but I have googled that title several times and nothing has come out yet. I am plenty sure that the book came out before 2007 because that was the year I read the magazine. I only remember the description and the frame of a young blonde girl hugging some sort of dragon , it was in pastel colors, I think.

ISO pet friendly sober living home for victim of domestic violence: CA

I have a friend who has some sort of mental disorder who is a victim of domestic violence and addicted to meth. Her family won't take her in because they can't handle her behavior. I believe she is Manic Depressive because she has a lot of the same behaviors that I used to suffer from myself before I was diagnosed and properly medicated. She is extremely bonded to her (friendly) chihuahu and will not go anywhere without him. I have helped her as much as I could but because I live in the same city as all the people she knows, she can not get better or make process. I'm sure she would be willing to go anywhere that's offered to her so long as she can bring her chihuahu. She knows she needs help but dosnt know how to go about it.

I'm searching for a sober living home / program that can help her. Preferred location would be California, Arizona, Nevada, etc. I will drive her as far as I can so long as she can get the help she needs. It needs to be somewhere outside of central California. If anyone knows of any places that I can tell her about, that would be greatly appreciated! I don't know what more I can do for her... I can't keep her living in my house because it's become unsafe for both of us.

I know that there are pet hotels to use, but my cats were so traumatised by the sudden change of home last year that I don’t feel very comfortable with stressing them out so much.

How to keep bladder snails as a pet without overpopulation?

You know how ants are annoying pests when they raid your cabinet but they’re awesome in an ant farm? Anyway, that’s how I feel about bladder snails. I kinda wanna keep a small β‰ˆ10L tank of them now, but don’t wanna breed them so much they kill themselves with their bioload. Any advice for this weird endeavor?

unnecessary but interesting backstory following

I rinsed and dumped a bucket of old gravel into my 10gal quarantine tank for substrate. I treated the fish, that was that. However, after removing the filter and heater, I decided to let it sit as I went on a week vacation (COVID-safe; don’t kill me) since I didn’t really have time to clean it all out. Came back, got around to cleaning it and noticed there were SNAILS everywhere. About fifteen of them, somehow having survived a month only in damp gravel. Now, when I had a bladder snail problem before, I’d pluck them out as soon as I saw them. These were kinda big (but still tiny) and I honestly thought they were too cute to just salt and throw down the toilet. And that’s how I ended up here.
