I'm out of the loop but it seems like one day it was the most recognizable hand signal in the world and the next day people were getting fired from jobs and apologizing for the "OK" sign. What am I missing? Does anybody have the history on this?
Aside from it being, what I imagine, a universally understood sign for OK it used to be a game with friends where you’d make that symbol, try to get your buddy to look at it, and once they did you’d punch him the shoulder.
How did it get co-opted by hate groups and what specifically does it “stand for” to those monsters?
My 2 colleagues were arguing during a bit of a heated and pressured moment on the job.
I took my Brazilian colleague to one side asking him kindly to cool down. His English isn't perfect so I said "less aggression, we need friendship here, we'e a team"
He said he understood and calmed down a bit, but didn't seem too convinced. Then whilst walking away he gestured 👌 to me.
Normally I would think it was resolved somewhat, but he still seemed angry and unwilling to cooperate. Plus I have heard this gesture can be offensive in Brazil, hence why he may have used it...
Can anyone clarify what he might have been suggesting?
Edit: Thank you guys for replying. I think despite my confusion, he was most likely using the "Western" version to say "All good" or "No problem". He's a nice guy with a short fuse, and given he was speaking English I think it was a sign of understanding. If not, then it's no problem either. I'll just see where things go from here.
