The fisher is a house cat-sized weasel native to the northern USA and Canada. Like other weasels, they are fierce hunters and are one of the few regular predators of the North American porcupine, which they kill by repeated bites to the face before carefully flipping them over to avoid the quills.

The North American porcupine is the only native North American mammal with antibiotics in its skin. This adaptation prevents infections in case the porcupine falls to the ground and gets jabbed by its own quills. Porcupines often climb high up in trees to reach succulent buds on the ends of twigs.

The North American Porcupine has antibiotics in its skin to prevent infection if it accidentally sticks itself with a quill. They often have such accidents when they fall out of trees. It seems tender buds on the end of branches are too tempting for this herbivore to resist.
