A list of puns related to "Molecular symmetry"
Iβm currently studying molecular symmetry and I canβt quite grasp how to find axes of rotation and the value of n. With molecules with a few atoms itβs fairly easy and intuitive, and also with highly symmetric shapes like dodecahedrons cubes etc but with bigger molecules I canβt quite do it. Are there great tutorials around (the ones Iβm finding are awful) or is there a way to determine the axis of rotation easily?
I have seen lots of flowcharts trying to understand the point group of a molecule. But how do I know if the molecule has a C4 axe or C2 axe and generally any axe?How can I understand this?
I have been trying to learn this for hours, but none of it makes sense. There are no patterns to anything and every time I figure out a rule I immediately find another molecule that contradicts what I just figured out. Any help would be nice.
This is probably an overly simplistic question for those of you that frequent this sub, but as a lurker here I thought I'd ask you guys first. My gf is a bio major and currently taking inorganic chem and having trouble with molecular symmetry. I tried to recall my college chem classes as best I could and wiki'd to the best of my abilities, but you guys always seem to be able to explain things in a concise and comprehensible way. So folks of /r/chemistry, can you tell me everything I need to know to help her get through this stuff? Some basic things that I need refreshers on:
Elements - obv we can leave out identity, but I'm having trouble visualizing even symmetry/plane of symmetry
Binary operations
MOST IMPORTANTLY - point groups. My biggest question here is, should I be able to determine point group of a molecule simply by looking at it? Would she memorize molecules of a given point group or deduce the molecule's point group from how it looks.
She keeps referencing "see-saw" molecules. No idea there...
I would like to apologize in advance for how awfully I must have worded all this. I'm as clueless to the minutia as I sound, and I know how frustrating it is to answer questions that are poorly asked. Thanks in advance everyone!
I think I have the proper shape of the diagram but how do I label the symmetries of the MOs?
Picked up Molecular Symmetry and Group Theory by Alan Vincent. Still in the first programme. Anyway I built a model and tried to draw Ethane, but it isn't clicking. Can someone help explain Improper Rotation or pass a link that will help me visualize it better? Thank you for your time.
Thanks in advance, I understand the character table itself and what the symmetric/ antisymmetric blah blah all means. But what is this x^2 + y^2 term that keeps popping up in the quadratic column, I recognize x^2 - y^2 as a d-orbital, but I have never came across this x^2 + y^2 until I started working through character tables.

Greetings! This here is a very basic outline of epistemology, the philosophical discipline that studies knowledge. I hope this guide will be helpful to theists and atheists alike. Be forewarned, I am not an expert, not even close - merely an interested lay-person. My goal is simply to give an overview of the various concepts and positions, to facilitate informed discussion. Although, to be honest, it is also to get these ideas straight in my own head :)
I will not present every position. Nor will I present any arguments for or against the various positions (both to remain unbiased and for brevity). I would ideally like to give many examples for each concept, but unfortunately, I feel I must cut most of these for brevity (please add some in the comments if you like!)
Everything I say is up for debate and constructive criticism. I may accidentally say something that is misleading, or straight-up incorrect. Please correct me if I do, preferably with a source
Key terms (ie google-able words) have been bolded. Italics are for emphasis
My sources are the SEP, IEP, and Wikipedia
Letβs start with the most basic concept. What is [βtruthβ](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/truth/)? There are a few theories of truth, with some subtle distinctions between them, but most arenβt relevant here
The most widely held view is the [Correspondence Theory of Truth. This holds that βa proposition is true if and only if it corresponds to realityβ. So, for example, the proportion βsnow is whiteβ is true if and only if is actually the case that snow is white.
Another popular view is the Deflationary Theory of Truth. This view is based on the observation that the sentence "it is true that snow is white" doesn't seem to add any substantial content to simply asserting "the snow is white". The main idea of the deflationary approach is (a) that all that can be significantly said about truth is exhausted by an account of the role of the expression βtrueβ or of the concept of truth in our talk and thought, and (b) that, by contrast with what traditional views assume, this role is neither metaphysically substantive nor explanatory (SEP)
A minority view is the [Coherence Theory of Truth]([https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/truth-coherence](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/tru

The day the First Prophet learned to speak was the day her guardians learned she was having visions. Dreams that intersected waking life.
Nobody believed the visions were real, least of all the assembly of pediatric neurologists, psychologists and psychiatrists who came to analyze her. To βcureβ her. Even the First Prophet, who was called Emerett back then, did not believe her dreams were real (except when she was in the middle of them).
But the anti-hallucinatory medication was neither effective, nor was it worth the costs on her mental development. These waking dreams did not appear harmful, so the experts and her guardians agreed on a different course. Monitor her, make note of any adverse effects, and hope she grows out of them. No further action to be taken at this time.
At first, monitoring was intense. She was required to report her dreams, multiple times a day. She gave detailed explanations of people who did not exist, having conversations that did not make sense. Sometimes, she would refer to concepts - gravitational exception, or the limitations of speed - of which no child should understand. But she could not demonstrate knowledge, and so it was marked as childish imitation. Most likely, they said, she had been eavesdropping on adults, and using their words to garner attention. Still, they studied her.
Over time, she became intimately familiar with her own mind, through the lens of deeply experienced medical professionals, and their endless questions.
But as the days moved into years, and the experts found no source from which her visions sprang forth, they began to take her affliction less seriously. Even as she grew out of childhood, and out of adolescence, and into her first - and only - life as the woman named Emorynn, she became little more than a puzzle for bored biologists. Many tried to eliminate her visions. No pills, no cognitive treatments, nor any kind of neurological analysis, physical or otherwise, seemed to have any effect.
In the end, they chalked it up to a slight abnormality with her brain. Tissue, growing where it should not have been. And unless she would

Their homeworld is deadly, with no doubt. From the molecular oxidizer O2 fully 22% of the atmosphere, to the monstrous solvent Dihydro Monoxide (H2O) covering 70% of the planets surface, that doesnt even begin to describe the deadliness of that planet.
Its life has evolved to also be 70% of that nasty H2O, most of the life actually breathes the corrosive O2 for its metabolism. Indeed; such a metabolism of a Human is why they burn so hot, store and consume so much energy, and die so young. That is the cost of such 'high octane' biological chemical basis. Thats what it takes to overcome the Deadliness.
[Side recess: a poem from Earth, very appropriate for Earth evolved life: "Tiger! Tiger! Burning bright! In the forests of the Night! What immortal hand or eye- could frame thy fearful symmetry?!"]
Then there are the Bacterial, fungal, and viral swarms, constantly infecting every living thing the millisecond of any opportunity, that the multicellular life forms must have an immensely powerful auto immune system to have even a chance of stopping and overcoming an infection.
Yes, Yes, the life on that Deathworld is a ravenous frenzy of everyones nightmare, to be sure, class.
But today we will discuss just why Earth is a Deathworld. Why the evolved life came to be this way. As we all come to understand in our wisdom- 'how' or 'what' is not nearly as revealing as 'why'.
Earth itself is a very rare and unusual planet, to begin with. While the Humans consider it "normal", when we compare a Human to any other Galactic species, it is quite clear their version of 'Normal' is a bit misplaced. Humanity was quite shocked that they were never able to find any "earth-like" worlds in any of the stars anywhere near their solar system. It took some time for any of them to realize "earth like" was truly 1 in 100 billion. For there are truly only 3 other worlds similar to its condition in our entire Galaxy. (This was the unknown factor in their Drake Equation, by the way, Class)
Earth, from nearly its very beginning, is atypical. In its formative era it was struck by another terrestrial planet, approximately 20% the size of the proto-earth. A titanic collision of this sort during protoplanetary formation often means the total destruction of both worlds- undoing billions of years of accretion in forming the planets.
But Earth survived the impact. The collision angle and amount was ju

Motivation.Β How can we exploit symmetry when doing physics?Β An ideal spring exemplifies physical symmetry.Β Initially stationary at x=L, the spring obeys m (d^2 /dt^2 )x = (d/dx)(k x^2 /2) . We can imagine a variety V of universes, each inhabited by a ruler, a clock, a massive ball, and an ideal spring.Β Each universe induces a real numbered plot x=f(t) gotten by measuring the spring against the ruler, clock, ball.Β That Newton's law for the spring is homogeneous means that the group GL(R,1)^3 acts very nicely on V by scaling the ruler, clock, ball and modifying the spring parameters m,L,k accordingly.Β All quantities determined by Newton's law (e.g. spring period T) must thus also enjoy this symmetry.Β What does this entail for T?
Formal setup.Β We fix a group S of physical symmetries and consider S-spaces (spaces on which S acts).Β We posit a S-space V of conceivable worlds.Β We call (equivariant!) maps from V "experiments" or "quantities".Β When S acts trivially on a quantity's target, that quantity is "unitless".
Key Observation.Β The category of unitless S-spaces under a given S-space O' has an initial object: the set of orbits of O'.Β Said another way: if a unitless quantity e:V-->O depends only on e':V-->O' --- that is, if there exists f:O'-->O with e=fe' --- then f is constant on each orbit of O'.
Note.Β The set of orbits of O' is often easy to understand.Β E.g. when S is a lie group smoothly acting on O', we can generically compute a local parameterization of the set of orbits: just take the tangent space of O' mod the tangent subspace induced by the lie algebra of G.Β Β The situation thus lends itself to dimension counting.
Example A.Β In the ideal spring system, S=GL(R,1)^3 induces three fundamental one-dimensional S-spaces --- call them O_ruler, O_clock, O_ball.Β Tensors of these representations are also S-spaces.Β m,L,k are physical quantities that map to the S-spaces O_ball, O_ruler, and O_stiff = O_mass @ O_clock^op @ O_clock^op.Β Here, @ means tensor and op means opposite action.Β The period T is also a physical quantity; it maps to O_clock.Β So T' = T^2 k/m is a unitless quantity that by Newton depends only on m,L,k.Β Therefore, T' = f(m,L,k) where f is constant on orbits in O_ball Γ O_ruler Γ O_stiff.Β But S acts transitive

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the Laboratory of Dr Laila Moubayidin, working on cutting-edge science in the field of developmental genetics.
The focus of Dr Moubayidinβs research group is to understand how multicellular plant organs set up symmetric patterns, thus establishing either bilateral or radial symmetry during organogenesis.
The group aims to develop a full genetic, molecular, and cellular understanding of the biological rules underlying organ symmetry by investigating how cell-division and hormonal cross-talks control the establishment and transition of symmetric patterns while organs develop.
The role
The successful applicant will study a post-translational mechanism, based on phosphorylation, fundamental for controlling the activity of a key regulator of plant organ symmetry establishment and transition.
The postholder will plan and conduct genetic, biochemical and molecular experiments usingΒ Arabidopsis thalianaΒ as a model system, as well as other plant models where appropriate,Β e.g.,Β N.benthamiana. They will develop skills in developmental genetics, including microscopy analysis of mutant phenotypes, and proteomic analysis.
The role will also involve assisting less-experienced group members, acting as a role model, and promoting a collaborative working environment. Therefore, it is expected that the post holder will interpret data with a mature degree of independence and be an excellent communicator and team player.
The ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will have a PhD and a BSc in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology or Plant Biology or related discipline.
Advanced knowledge and proficiency in proteomics and/or plant biochemistry methods is essential.
Previous experience in Arabidopsis developmental genetics would be advantageous.
Additional information
Interviews will be held on 18Β January 2022.

Hi all,
Presenting a general framework for Graph Neural Networks to learn positional encodings (PE) alongside structural representations, applicable to any MP-GNNs, including (Graph) Transformers.
"Graph Neural Networks with Learnable Structural and Positional Representations"
Vijay Prakash Dwivedi, Anh Tuan Luu, Thomas Laurent, Yoshua Bengio and Xavier Bresson.

#2minutebrief
Nodes in a graph do not have canonical positional information, like the global word positions in a sentence. This gives rise to limitations such as the lack of (global) structural information when message-passing GNNs are applied to learn on graphs. As a result, such models cannot distinguish isomorphic nodes or other graph symmetries.
In this work, we consider this problem of graph PEs and propose a framework named LSPE that can be used with any MP-GNNs to learn positional and structural feature representations at the same time, thus effectively capturing the two essential properties and tuning these w.r.t. to the task at hand.
Fig. The general MPGNNs-LSPE architecture.
In brief, LSPE enhances capabilities of an MP-GNN in the following way:
Above simple steps improves several MP-GNNs and Transformer-GNNs providing a performance boost of up to 64% on molecular datasets. At the same time, we retain the efficient linear complexity of message-passing while generating more expressive node embedding.

I wanted to discuss a topic of contention I see quite often with regards to Stasis and the crystals it produces. Namely, are these crystals cold? And if so, how cold?
The contention is understandable considering the seemingly conflicting lore at times. We can see evidence for Stasis being cold in a number of places within.
Kridis, and the Eliksni in general refer to Stasis as "the cold Dark".
>"Encased in the cold Dark, you cease to be a flesh-and-blood thing but become a memory thing, a thing of stillness." β Salvation's Grip
We also see a description of it as cold when Shayura is frozen by Aisha in the Trials of Osiris.
>"Waves of cold radiate outward from one of Aisha's extended hands; feathery shards of crystalline growths bristle off of her gauntlet." β Pyrrhic Ascent Cloak
Further to this we also get the ominous flavor text of Cryosthesia 77K
>"There are things colder than cold*.*"
We even get a very cold temperature of 77 Kelvins in it's title (more on this later).
So as we can see, it's not too hard to associate Stasis with cold and there are numerous other lore entries besides the ones I have shown that support this.
But there are also some lore entries that seem to contradict this. Namely this quote from Joxer:
>"I've never felt anything like it, being stuck in those shards. It doesn't even feel that cold, it's justβ¦ emptiness. Loneliness. I hate it." β Joxer
Before we analyze why the contradiction exists and how this can be rectified lets first understand what Stasis is and whether the lore gives us any indication of it's temperature. Believe it or not, understanding this will actually help provide an answer to our dilemma.
One of our first clues actually comes from the name of the Exclusive Beyond Light Collector's Edition emblem.
That temperature is Absolute zero kelvins or 0K, the temperature at which a thermodynamic system has the lowest energy. It corresponds to β273.15 Β°C or β459.67 Β°F in temperature. The coldest temperature a substance can reach.
At this temperature nearly all molecular motion of a substance cea
