thoughts: the new concept of “hispanic”/“mestizo” is a successful colonizer attempt at native erasure

thoughts and opinions on this? i posted on a different sub about my heritage (i am ndee and black, but physically present as just native) and got a comment about how i look “mestiza”.

as an indigenous woman, i hate being called mestiza, mexican, hispanic, spanish, etc. because it IS NOT me. i identify with my indigenousness stronger than anything else and was raised in an indigenous household, by an indigenous mother, with my heritage constantly surrounding me. i don’t want to culturally associate with the people that colonized my family.

can anyone else relate to this, or share their thoughts?

Does your country have a term for people who are mixed ethnicity? (e.g. Mestizo, метис, coloured, Hāfu)

Does there exist a term for people have mixed ethnic ancestry? What is it called? Or is it term for specific ethnic mixes?

What's the connotation behind the word? Neutral? Or is it negative similar to like 'half-breed'?

In many European colonies, distinct castes or classes of mixed-race or creole peoples emerged like the mulattos, mestizos, gens de colour libres or Indos, yet such distinct groups seem absent from British colonies. Why might this be the case?

How accurate is 23andme for mestizos?

I remember when mestizos used to have a lot of unassigned DNA. My DNA test results used to be 52% Native American, 33% European, 8% unassigned. But after the algorithm update, my results updated to 52% Native American, 40% European, and 1% unassigned.

How accurate is this DNA test for mestizos after the update? I’m asking because I noticed that the European % always went up while the Native American % stayed about the same for mestizo people. I would have expected the European % of some mestizos to go up but not all of them. Also, there’s not that many reference groups for native Americans as there are for Europeans.

I just think that some of that unassigned DNA got assigned incorrectly as European rather than Native American due to the reasons I just mentioned above. But I’m not sure.

Note: Native American would be indigenous American. Back in the day, that group used to be labeled as Native American instead of indigenous American

Has anyone studied how to brew Ayahuasca with indigenous/mestizo groups in the amazon?

It's something that I have been very interested in doing for a long time. Recently, I attended an ayahuasca ceremony in Ecuador and after talking a bit with the shaman, he highly suggested that I visit El Casa Del Yage in Colombia. He said that I could learn with them. Curious to hear if anyone has suggestions or an idea of what the experience would be like?

Do polarized DNA mappings on x chromosome indicate gender dichotomous ancestry? For context, I am a mestizo hispanic who is about half native and half Spanish. I’m curious if the fact that almost all of my x chromosome is marked as native means that my ancestors were female natives and spanish men.

Mestizo Question

Forgive my Anglo-American ignorance:

  1. Why are some Latin American countries so indigenous such as Bolivia or Chile while others like Argentina have few Mestizos or indigenous peoples?
  2. Why do Mexicans of European descent (Such as as Vincente Fox or Guelermo Del Toro) tend to identify with indigenous or Mestizo identity i.e. Atzlan but make no references to their Spanish roots in Europe?
  3. Why do the old small European-descended elite Criollo families (Mostly Spanish) seem to be wealthy in some Latin American countries like Mexico but in Cuba or South American countries the so-called "Gallegos" or Spanish immigrants were often poor?
