Anyone knows the best way to practice fast mental math? I want to prep for an entrance exam (will be in 2 years maybe)that proscribes calculators.

I want to improve at the very least 50% better before the end of the year. I'm plain awful at computing, I find even computing for changes in buying from convenience stores really hard. Multiplication, division, addition, subtraction- all the operators. If you also have some shortcut cheat sheets for computing exponents and stuff I'll be glad. If it's alright, if you have some study notes when you were in grade 11-12, I'd be glad if you shared.

Do you check easy mental math calculations with a calculator even though they're easy calculations (e.g. 7+5) and/or you're 99% sure you're correct?

Basically, if you have to do a quick math calculation in your head, do you often try to confirm your answer with a calculator just in case? Also, are you introverted or extroverted?

This poll is to see if there's any relation between the two things.

i really hate the mentality of calculating your tdee as sedentary or not eating back exercise calories

i see so many people saying to always calculate your calories as if you were sedentary because you’ll create a bigger deficit and lose faster. i bought into it for a long time too. it sounds logical! but i feel like it sets a lot of people down a disordered eating path. you need to fuel your workouts with adequate nutrition. the only way i’ve been able to start to break the pattern of overeating is by ensuring i’m catering to what my body needs, and it needs a little extra fuel after a gym sesh. just my two cents 🤷🏻‍♀️

edit: this is particularly geared toward women trying to eat like 1200 calories while also exercising regularly and wondering why they are struggling

second edit: i appreciate all the advice, but after going from obese to a normal bmi, i am now nearly done losing weight. just sharing what i’ve learned.

"As long as there is mental discrimination and calculating judgment, all the perceptions of one's own mind are dreams" - Swampland Flowers No. 20

Swampland Flowers: The Letters and Lectures of Zen Master Ta-Hui Translated by J.C. Cleary

"Profound Clarity"

[excerpt]

>These days there's a kind of phony whose own standpoint is not genuine: they just teach people to control their minds and sit quietly, to sit to the point where the breath ceases. I call this lot pitiable. I'm asking you to meditate in just this way, but though I instruct you like this, it's just that there's no other choice. If there really were something to work on in meditation this way, it would defile you. This mind has no real substance: how can you forcibly bring it under control? If you try to bring it under control, where do you put it? Since there's no place to put it, there's no times or seasons, no past or present, no ordinary people or sages, no gain or loss, no quiet or confusion; there's no name of profound clarity and no essence of profound clarity and no function of profound clarity, no one who speaks thus of profound clarity and no one to hear such talk of profound clarity.

grrl: I selected this bit for those forum members who are struggling against unwanted thoughts. These things with which you would do away cannot go anywhere. The full text of this letter explains that "correct awareness" is what's left after mental discrimination and calculating judgment have been relieved of their duties.

The full text of the letter

Despite my claim to not having any questions, now that I have created this post, I do. I'm a little unclear about the steps to achieve this quiescent mind and consciousness. Are there steps? Is Dahui for meditation or against it? Maybe just against the phony teachers. I think, in the quote in the title, he's equating dreams with conceptual thoughts. Ideas.

What do you think?
