Yandere Book Recommendations

Hi, so part one of Writing Yandere Characters is on the way soon, but while I'm writing that, I figured I'd take a break to do something a bit simpler and easier before I release that. I know this isn't a very book-focused subreddit, and not everyone here will be super interested, but hopefully it'll be of use to those of you that are, and who have been looking for a good yandere novel to curl up with. I've tried to include a bit of variety in genres, but I'll admit I may show a bit of favoritism towards horror and thrillers here and there. All that being said, I see no reason to keep y'all waiting, so I hope you enjoy these.

  1. Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu - Absolute masterpiece of a story, and one of my favorite novels of all time (second only to Shelley's Frankenstein), this novel follows a rich girl named Laura who lives with her dad in an isolated castle when one day, a carriage breaks down in the woods, with its passengers leaving behind a young girl by the name of Carmilla, and saying they'll come back to pick her up sometime. Carmilla and Laura hit it off quickly, but Laura notices quite quickly that Carmilla's affections seem more than platonic, and in fact, are quite obsessive. It's much more famous now as a piece of early sapphic literature, as well as Bram Stoker's inspiration for writing Dracula in 1897, but this book is so much more complex and brilliant than either of those already impressive accolades could even begin to describe, and I'd like to avoid spoiling much more than I already have. It manages to mix horror, romance, and tragedy in such effective and balanced ways, creating one of the most beautifully written horror novels of all time. Seriously, just go read it, I cannot recommend it enough.

  2. The Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux - If you couldn't tell, I'm a bit of a sucker for gothic horror, but Leroux's classic novel of a deformed, obsessive stalker living in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and stalking a beautiful Opera singer he is obsessed with has worked its way into pop culture, seemingly for good, and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't at least know the basic concept. Erik is pretty much the quintessential example of the Tragic Yandere archetype, and while the story is super pulpy, it has a great deal of heart and a surprising amount of poignancy. If you can get past a few obnoxious side characters and ridiculous moments, The Phantom Of The Opera is a wonderful piece of literature th

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Epic Fantasy Series Compiled

*Reposting from yesterday, as original post got inappropriately flagged. Some adjustments from previous post have been made.*

I'm a sucker for Epic Fantasy, but the size of my tbr pile makes it hard to actually pick one out and start reading. To address this, I've attempted to create a semi-definitive (impossible, ik) list of fantasy series of a certain style (see trait list below).

The purpose of this post is to seek help in refining this list so others with similar tastes can reference this post rather than spend two days digging through hundreds of recommendation post from the history of this subreddit (as I've done).

So here's the gist of the list:

  1. Epic Fantasy Series - Large in Scale / High in Stakes / Fantasy Setting / Multiple Books
  2. Interconnected - Preferrably more in common beyond the setting. Preferrably not episodic.
  3. Not YA, Not Webnovels - Not trying to yuck anyone's yum, but primarily YA novels could be another entire list.
  4. Multiple POVs Preferred - Not a necessity.
  5. High Quality and Consistency - Series with five 8/10 books preferred over a series with one 10/10 and four 5/10 books. While quality is subjective, this list is meant to include series that are generally very well-received.
  6. Cohesive Ending - Closure to series as a whole present or planned/intended.
  7. One Entry per Author - To avoid bloat, r/Fantasy's favorite qualifying series was selected for each author. Disagree with the selection? Let me know.

Here is the current list alphabetically by series title.

  1. Ash and Sand - Richard Nell (c)
  2. The Black Company - Glen Cook (c)
  3. The Book of the Ancestor - Mark Lawrence (c)
  4. The Book of the New Sun - Gene Wolfe (c)
  5. The Broken Earth Trilogy - N. K. Jemisin (c)
  6. The Burning - Evan Winter (u)
  7. A Chorus of Dragons - Jenn Lyons (u)
  8. The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne - Brian Staveley (c)
  9. The Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny (c)
  10. Chronicles of the Black Gate - Phil Tucker (c)
  11. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - Stephen R. Donaldson (c)
  12. Codex Alera - Jim Butcher (c)
  13. The Coldfire Trilogy - Celia S. Friedman (c)
  14. The Cosmere - Brandon Sanderson (u)
  15. Cradle - Will Wight (u)
  16. The Crown of Stars - Kate Elliott (c)
  17. The Daevabad Trilogy - S. A. Chakraborty (c)
  18. The Dagger and the Coin - Daniel Abraham (c)
  19. The Dandelion Dynasty - Ken Liu (u)
