[Product Question] Will Daily Use of Salicylic Acid Cause Overexfoliation/Skin Barrier Damage?

Would you risk the danger of over exfoliating your skin if you use salicylic acid daily? For reference, I'm currently using TO's 2% Salicylic Acid Solution all over my face (forehead and cheeks) to clear up CCs at night. (am also using a glycolic acid toner twice a week).

I've had alright results on my forehead using the solution together with the glycolic - I felt so much grains come out during oil cleansing the first week I started! But so far, results haven't really been as drastic for my cheek area especially.

Lol I don't want to make the mistake of ruining my skin barrier again :P

Thank you :)

[Acne] Because of bad acne, I started a different routine involving salicylic acid wash, witch hazel toner, benzoyl peroxide and Retin A in with doxycycline. Can I use aloe vera during this routine to fade scars or should I wait until my acne is more healed to start dealing with the scars?

I had a bout of bad acne for reasons unknown for the past month and a half. After seeing the doctor, I started using salicylic acid face wash, following up with witch hazel toner and benzoyl peroxide during the day and Retin A cream at night. I've also been taking doxycycline. However, my acne has not disappeared completely yet which is understandable considering it has only been about a week. Is it okay to use aloe vera in conjunction with all my medications to fade acne scars while using these medications or should I wait until my acne has faded almost entirely before introducing aloe vera?

[Research] TIL salicylic acid has UV protectant properties, and one of its salt forms used to be an FDA approved sunscreen

Consider my mind blown. I've always thought of salicylic acid (BHA) as a photosensitizer like glycolic acid and AHAs, but apparently the opposite is true.

  • The use of salicylic acid is contraindicated prior to UVB therapy (where a patient's skin is purposefully exposed to UVB light, usually to treat psoriasis) because it blocks UVB radiation. (1, 2, 3, 4)
  • In vivo studies also show that salicylic acid blocks UVA radiation (1, 2) suggesting it is also contraindicated before PUVA therapy (combination of UVA light and the oral drug psoralen for treatment for various skin disorders, graft-versus-host disease, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma).

I would guess it does still increase photosensitivity if the skin is overexfoliated. This does make me feel less worried about using SA-containing products in the morning under sunscreen, though!

Also, regarding trolamine salicylate, a salt formed by combining salicylic acid and triethanolamine (a base which neutralizes the pH of salicylic acid):

  • It's mainly used as an analgesic agent in Aspercreme-type muscle rubs. It is sometimes used as an additive to increase the photostability of topical medications and cosmetics, though.
  • Trolamine salicylate was also used as a UV filter in some sunscreens, but as of 2019 the FDA explicitly does NOT recommend its use in sunscreens any longer because of safety and efficacy concerns. Basically, sunscreens have to sit on the surface of the skin in order to actually work. Trolamine salicylate, however, absorbs deeper into the skin and therefore is not as effective as other sunscreen filters. (1)
  • Additionally, liberal reapplication of trolamine salicylate can cause "serious detrimental health effects, including bleeding, caused by the anti-coagulation effects of salicylic acid." We know this because there have been cases where people have repeatedly slathered on large amounts of analges

[Routine Help] Can I use both Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid?

I currently have moderate to severe body acne (arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs). I have had it for about 3 years now and have developed quite the number of scars. I live in Canada so it takes up to 6 months to get a dermatologist appointment that only lasts 60 seconds so I've taken matters into my own hands for the time being.

Here's my routine for my back only (Face has cleared up perfectly)...

Morning and night (after waking up)

-Shower with PanOxyl (10% benzoyl peroxide) body wash

-15 min

-10% glycolic acid moisturizer

it seems to work for the most part, but I am still getting large inflamed papules and pustules mainly on my shoulders and lats (sides of back) most likely due to weightlifting (back/shoulders being pressed against a sweaty bench).

Would it be too much to add a Salicylic acid step after using the BP bodywash before moisturizing to act as an astringent? The only way I would be able to do this would be dumping the salicylic acid all over my body once I get out of the shower. Would this help minimize papules and pustules?

[Routine Help] Newbie to retinol. Can I use it with salicylic acid/glycolic acid/benzoyl peroxide?

Hi all,

I went to a medical spa last week and it was recommended that I start using retinol. I went out and bought a 0.1% retinol cream by La Roche-Posay. Right now, I am only using it at night with my Cerave face wash, Thayer's unscented toner, and my regular moisturizer. I used to use the La Roche-Posay Effaclar 3-step system in the evening, but stopped for fear of irritation with the retinol. I do not have sensitive skin at all, and I have been using the retinol nightly with no issues. My skin is very oily and I have noticed more blackheads on my nose as a result of stopping the 3-step system. Would it be okay to bring back my old products to my routine? Or at least in the morning?

The cleanser has 2% salicylic acid and 0.05% LHA. The toner has 0.5% salicylic acid and 2% glycolic acid. The treatment cream has 5.5% benzoyl peroxide.

[Routine Help] Can I use both glycolic acid and salicylic acid in my routine?

Hello! I'm re-building my routine and currently I'm only moisturizing (Clinique moisture surge) and double cleansing (Baby Oil + Clinique's mild facial soap for dry skin). I want to work on my SFs!
