Hi, I’m new to this sub so idk if it’s been discovered already. But I’ve had seb derm on my scalp for 15+ years and coal tar is the only thing that’s truly helped calm down my flare ups.
I also have curly hair, and I try to be choosy about which hair products I use. But I’ve always had to throw the dreaded T gel into my routine because otherwise I’d be an itchy flaky mess.
Anyway, I found this shampoo brand called Pura D’or. They have a few versions of shampoo, but I bought the maximum defense anti-hair thinning shampoo. Among its ingredients is coal tar. It’s pricey, about $40 when I ordered it online from Walmart.
The smell has that slight coal tar medicated scent, but overall it is much more tolerable. It smells more like essential oils than anything. I’ve been using it for about a week now and my scalp is happy! Love that it’s gentle enough to use every day if needed.
Does anyone else have experience with this shampoo?
I’ve used it all- shampoos, bar soap, ointment and liquid solutions. I had a really good high % coal tar product routine and I’d buy in bulk. But is high % coal tar illegal in the US now? I need to restock and can’t find my psoriatrax shampoo or compounding coal tar liquid anywhere. Does anyone know what’s going on?!? Tgel is a kids game for me, I need 25%/5%, not this .5-1 junk.
I’m NOT in California where I know these products are banned.

I just noticed the psoriasin and my 217 that I got today expired…psoriasin in 02/21 and MG217 in 10/21. Can I still use it or should I return it. TIA
It's been at least the weeks now. I can't find my usual (psoriasin) anywhere. I think the supply chain breakdown hit them. I'm in Calgary, Canada. Anyone else having issues where you are?
My scalp is usually very irritated, I tried using many shampoos including Nizoral without success.
Lately I found that coal tar shampoo (Neutrogena T/Gel) makes it a lot better and apparently this is the shampoo used by the participants in finasteride studies.
Problem is it does seem to leave some kind of residue and smells that last 1-3 days.
I tend to shampoo my scalp right before microneedling to clean it but today was the first time microneedling (1.5mm) after washing with the coal tar shampoo and I was wondering, is there any chance this could get into the blood stream and if so is there any harm to it?
I know coal-tar is used topically to treat psoriasis but I couldn't find any data on safety regarding to microneedling or to when it generally absorbed to the blood stream.

Hi, I was recommended to use T Gel shampoo by my dermatologist for my seb derm and I went to look for some several times but it appears to be sold out, which I chalked up to the supply chain issues (I have no idea). Is there any readily available coal tar shampoos that work as well (or maybe better?) as T Gel but can be found in a drug store or online for a low cost? My local grocer (Kroger offshoot) stopped carrying any coal tar shampoos several months ago. I got a Neutrogena x-strength knock off from Amazon that was fine but when I went to reorder they were out. And apparently so is everyone else??? Anyone running into this too or have a good online source for coal tar shampoo? I tried some pine tar shampoo in the meantime and the wood fire smell was so pungent I wanted to puke. Would take gasoline hair instead any day.

For the most part, medicated coal tar ointment works to manage my psoriasis. Basically, the entirety of both my shins and elbows are covered with numerous spots on my upper arms, ears, and legs. So I like it because it is (or was anyway) readily available and cheap. The salicylic creams are basically useless for me.
Lately, it's either impossible to find, or wicked expensive ($35-50 for a jar that used to cost $11-14). Walmart, walgreens, CVS, target, all sold out.
Any other users out there that have found an alternative. It's coming to be a difficult winter if I can't find something.
I've seen some conflicting information about using coal tar treatments on genital areas, as in, some say too much salicylic acid will irritate those areas. How much salicylic acid is too much for genitals? I'm assuming 3% is too much, but will 2% be ok? Or should I try to look for something that's only 1%?
Anyone else having issues finding 2% medicated coal tar? The ointment, not the cream. It’s super helpful for me, but I’m having trouble finding it reliable anymore. Just curious is something in the supply chain is causing this, if it will be long term.
Hi all, I've had moderate to severe p since I was born and have always struggled with scalp psoriasis. I have long hair do this doesn't help things either. I have always been interested in pine tar as an alternative to coal tar ever since I heard of it. Now that the is a coal tar shampoo shortage I'm even more interested in trying pine tar. Grandpa's pine tar shampoo is the same price on Amazon as tgel right now and I wanted to know if anyone else has tried this or had success with it?
Hello! A few years ago I found a coal tar liquid solution on Amazon what was super concentrated. I mixed with coconut oil (liquid) and applied to my scalp with one of those hair dye bottles. It was really effective for scalp psoriasis. I’m almost out and I can’t find it on Amazon or online. I even contacted the manufacturer but didn’t get a response. Does anyone in the US know where to buy something like this? Did laws change to prohibit it? I know California has laws with this stuff but I’m nowhere near CA. Thanks!!
I've begun using coal tar ointment to mitigate my psoriasis (mostly arms and legs) with some success. However, what I don't love about it are the small sizes most commercial coal tar skin products seem to come in, and also the rest of the bill of ingredients on many of them. If it's something I'm going to use daily for the long haul, I'd prefer it to be a plant oil base instead of petrolatum or mineral oil. I'm comfortable with the idea of rolling my own and understand that procedural care would need to be taken with an ingredient like coal tar to get the right distribution and potency. Does anyone have any leads or ideas on a source for bulk medicine grade coal tar?

SSAB steel plant covers several kilometers of area and thus have several industrial processes going on at their site. It is considered hazardous work. Before the work was to commence they had made a walled up area, where as they emptied the tank, the tar would go into this walled up area, and they could afterwards commence cleaning the cistern. This would make sure tar would not be spilled over a larger area.
They had this idea, that they would open up the hatch, then as the tar very slowly emptied from the cistern, they would have plenty of time to run back to the walls, climb over them and then back to safety.
As plans go, this had to be one of the worst.
They also failed to have a spotter on the other side of the wall they were planning to go back over. There were a ladder at the wall as the picture shows. Noone was overlooking this operation, and it would be a while before anyone noticed that they were missing...

The cistern tank is about 20 meters high with a diameter of 20 meters. It 's capacity is approx 6,000 cubic meters of tar. The tank stored coal tar, which is a by-product of coke production. From this cistern TB 1206 the coal/tar would was pumped out to a smaller tank, TB 1207, from which the tar was in turn pumped out and loaded onto ships at the SSAB dock.
The tar tank must be inspected every six years. Its predecessor was inspected in 2006 whereby such great wear was found, that SSAB chose to have a new one built. Recently I was diagnosed by a dermatologist with SD and she prescribed a 3.0 grams coal tar shampoo. I have used it 3 times now and it has worked wonders but I've read that coal tar increases the chance of developing cancer after some time. Reading this obviously made me scared so I'm thinking about just finishing the bottle and stop using it. What's your experience with this ingredient? Should I just stop using it or is it safe for long term use?
Hi, so I've had dandruff problems basically since puberty. I've tried everything from oils to more or less showers to "normal" dandruff shampoos, etc. Whatever I could find. The only thing that has worked for me is coal tar. Now, I don't really like the idea of having to use coal tar shampoo forever, for various reasons. Does anyone have any other suggestions that might work for someone whose problem is only solved by coal tar? I have no idea exactly what causes the dandruff or why coal tar fixes it, which is why I'm so lost.
