Are other people following all this? It is getting pretty crazy.
Any reports from other counties around Texas?
Edit: There was a rumor they were successful in Wyse county and are attempting this in Tarrant County
TL;DR: The Maverick and Santa Cruz are both great light trucks and I hope they both stick around for a while. Whether you stick out the wait for your Mav or can't wait until next year and get a SC like me, you will be happy with your purchase.
Backstory: Back in May I sold my '12 Mustang to Carmax because they offered me more than I owed on the loan and I was tired of the maintenance expenses piling up. I was going to drive my husband's new/used Sentra while I saved up money for a down payment on a new car for myself, and after going back and forth between a Civic Hatchback, Forester Sport, and CX-5 I placed an order for an XLT Hybrid Lux Maverick in Area 51 in early July. The dealer told me that I could expect the truck around October/November, and my husband and I agreed that was a reasonable timeline to wait given the price and the capability of having a small truck, especially coming from a Mustang.
However, as time passed it became obvious that October was a pipe dream for delivery all along and I would more likely get my Maverick sometime in early 2022 at best given the hybrid scheduling delays. When I sold my Mustang I wanted to have myself a new car by August and was willing to delay to October, but not to next year.
Long story short, I ended up snagging a new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz SEL in Hampton Grey after driving one and realizing that yes, I could get my Maverick sooner most likely by switching to the ecoboost engine but by the time I did that and added the 4K tow package I would be at the same price as the Santa Cruz for just barely more towing capacity and would still be waiting for it to be built and delivered. So, I jumped ship.
Today I finally got to see a Maverick in person at the Texas State Fair. Ford had 4 models out, one inside that was roped off and three outside. The three outside were two XLTs and one Lariat. One of the XLTs was an ecoboost and the other XLT and Lariat were both hybrids. One of the XLTs had the lux package and, barring the exterior color, was essentially the same as the one I had ordered so it gave me a great window into what I sacrificed.
Things I immediately noticed between the two:
The seats on the Maverick have more cushion to them than the Santa Cruz, along with the arm rests on the doors and on the center console. It's slight, but noticeable to me.
There is a lot of room inside the Maverick, especially in the backseat. I would say theres probably an inch more room in the back of
